A Last Hurrah for Quality Drama
Review of Vincent - Series 1 DVD by
Volta120
Advantages: Slick and moody with excellent storylines
Disadvantages: Perhaps a little too moody for some
...***
Series Background
Vincent Gallagher (Winstone) is an ex-cop now running a team of private investigators in Manchester. They tackle anything, from insurance swindlers to benefit cheats, but the series itself deals (naturally) with the team's meatier and more dramatic investigations. Vincent is aided and abetted by his two senior assistants, Beth (Suranne Jones) and John (Ian Puleston-Davies) as well as by the two 'office juniors', a sweet single-mum, ... ...devoting his time to investigations Vincent is struggling to come to terms with his ruined love life. As the series gets under way we quickly learn that his partner, Cathy (Eva Pope), has walked out on him and moved in with one of his former police colleagues, DCI David Driscoll (Philip Glenister). The tensions between the trio will dominate the first series as will the subtle and understated attraction between Vincent and Beth.
Episode 1
The team ...

Broke MOuntain
Review of Brokeback Mountain DVD by
MikeyMoo200
Advantages: Cheap to buy
Disadvantages: Unusual film, disturbing in scenes
The story begins in 1963 and centres around the two main characters of the film Ennis Del Mar (played by Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) who pick up a summer job herding sheep in the mountains and ensuring that they don't get sen to the heavens by the Wolves.
Left alone in the mountains Jack and Ennis soon find that they have emotional feelings for one another. These are two hard men who live out their lives as Cowboys and ... ...rodeo's. Such feelings are both unusual and frightening that are associated with a filthy love affair.
The film was surrounded by some of the finest mountain scenery captured on film. To shows how beautiful and sensitive this film really is.
It is a film to watch if you want to let your emotions loose! ...

Messages
The Layer Cake is a metaphor for different levels of British society according to Matthew Vaughn. "The movie's about showing how drugs are everywhere and it doesn't matter who or where you are, you're only one person away from drugs, scoring drugs or being involved with criminals. There's a speech at the end of the film where Temple uses Layer Cake as a metaphor for life and how you go up and up and up from one layer of the cake ...

Keep your mind open and suck in the experience
Review of The Beach (Wide Screen) by
Trav3ller
Advantages: Great shots of Maya Bay. Excellent soundtrack.
Disadvantages: Limited depth. Key story characters missing from the original story.
The Beach is a movie based on the excellent debut novel by Alex Garland.
Set in Thailand, it is the story of a young American (in the book he's British) travelling to Asia, looking for adventure.
By pure chance, he finds the adventure that he was looking for, the room he decided to stay the night in was next to someone who has once been a citizen of 'The Beach'.
The next day, Richard, the main character, ends up with a rough hand-drawn map in ... ...his way, they leave for the island.
The story continues, they reach their destination using a variety of means of transport, and a few hiccups along the way.
When they finally set foot on the spectacular 'beach' (in real life it's shot in Maya Bay, on Phi Phi Ley Island, in the Krabi provence of Thailand) it's a sight to behold, and, speaking from my own experience, is almost like it is in real life, apart from there is a small gap in the cliffs ...

Three Kings get Full Marks
Review of Three Kings (Wide Screen) by
debs_89
Advantages: great story line, special features
Disadvantages: n/a
Having gone to tesco in order to look for a cheap DVD to watch one night with my boyfriend, I wasn't suprised he looked with distain at my chick flick before picking out 'Three Kings'. I am generally a big far films fan, but for some reason I didn't like the idea of this film.
We bought it however, considering it was only £5 and I was forced into watching it that night. How pleasently suprised I was. Any fans of 'Jarhead' would definatly enjoy this ... ...War has just ended, and four men, wanting to take home their own 'reward' for their service, venture into the Iraqi desert to discover the stollen Kuwaiti gold in one of Sadam's secret bunkers. When trying to leave with the gold however, they become entangled in a democratic uprising that leads them to become protectors of a group of Iraqi's, all trying to get across the border to freedom. The film is definatly interesting. And detailed. The story ...
