Sometimes you win sometimes you loose
Review of Match Point DVD by MI9to5

Advantages: Can be tense, shocking and unpredictable
Disadvantages: Appears to be a typical chick-flick on the surface

My reason for purchasing Match Point in the first instance was quite simple, Jonathon Rhys Myers was in it and for me that was as good an excuse as any to buy a new film. I'm so glad however that I did buy this film because not only does Rhys Myers play a fantastic part and look extremely handsome for the main but the film has become a firm favourite of mine. Chris (Jonathon Rhys Meyers) is an Irish tennis coach who after coaching Tom, the son of ...
..."There are moments in a match when the ball hits the top of the net and for a split second it can go either forward or fall back. With a little luck it goes forward and you win. Or maybe it doesn't and you lose." This line sums up the double-edged sword that the film is, as on more than one occasion the ball may go forward and Chris may uphold the life he has dreamed of but just as easily it may fall backwards and the world he has come to love may ... truth's still putting its boots on, sweetheart
Review of A Cry In The Dark (Wide Screen) by post-it-note

Advantages: True story
Disadvantages: unbelievable story

A cry in the dark is based on a famous Australian mystery, the death of baby Azaria Chamberlain. You know of the story for the cry of "that dingo took my baby" which has become a well-known cry, for its seeming absurdity. This film tries to portray though the absolute normality of this family, a simple life thrown into turmoil and unwanted fame through one quick moment. In August of 1980 the Chamberlain family was camping out at Uluru, the big red ...
...an ordinary Australian family on a camping holiday, as my family and many others have done so many times. Cooking dinner around the campfire Mum Lindy went and put the baby down for the night, but didn't close the tent flap (not that this may have made any difference) and went back to join the other campers. It was nighttime and already dark, soon a baby's cry is heard and Lindy sees a dog shaking its head and her baby in its mouth and in shock cries ... Read review

Newman as charismatic as ever.
Review of Cool Hand Luke DVD by Tof17

Advantages: Great scenario, oustanding acting performance..
Disadvantages: Absolutely none for me

...********************** Luke Jackson aka Cool Hand Luke is sent to correctional jail in 1948 (prisoner number 37) but intends to live his life as he pleases, not willing to conform to the prison rules, he escapes (several times), he wants to be free, because he wants to see his dying mother, he escapes simply because he doesn't belong there, he is a free spirit. A strong relationship will build between the inmates, the strongest of all with Dragline ...
...and that my friends is Cool Hand Luke. I think this is exactly how the director (Stuart Rosenberg) wanted it ... if not, the final result is probably better than he ever expected because this 2 hour movie makes you feel for the main character in many ways...funny, charming, cool, brilliant, painful are all adjectives you will go through when watching this prison drama. Moreover this movie is one of the great films about the carceral environment ... Read review

"Don't look know you're making an argument"
Review of A Few Good Men (Collectors Edition) (Wide Screen) by MI9to5

Advantages: A brilliantly crafted storyline
Disadvantages: Jack Nicholson can be a little dull in this film

...'A Few Good Men' is a unanimously acclaimed drama that highlights the dangerous and sometime precarious differences between following the orders of a military code of conduct and following one's conscience and moral code. The films plot spawns from something that upon first glance doesn't seem like it can provide any element of drama, interest or suspense, yet 'A Few Good Men' is and probably always will be one of the best films I have ever seen. ...
...time as Lt Daniel Kaffee, a brash, softball playing naval lawyer, who is so lazy he likes to settle everything outside of court in plea bargains (44 in 9 months). So much in fact that he's never actually seen the inside of a courtroom before. So why on earth is Kaffee the lead lawyer in a politically explosive murder case, charged with defending two marines accused of killing a fellow soldier? Is it so the case never sees the inside of a courtroom? ... Read review

My #1 favourite film of all time.
Review of Road To Perdition (Wide Screen) by mr_smith

Advantages: Great performances and a great story.
Disadvantages: None.

Many people think Sam Mendes's first movie American Beauty was his best as it won all the oscars including Best Director for himself. But I disagree. The story is about Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks), a lifelong gangster who is on the run with his son with a sadistic hitman (Jude Law) on hot pursuit. John Rooney (Paul Newman) has got the very thing he wants but Nitti (Stanley Tucci) is heading the operation. The film also stars Daniel Craig, Jeniffer ...
...actors (Tom Hanks and oscar -nominated Paul Newman) lead the all-star cast but in my personal opinion Jude Law gave the best performance as the clever, sly, sadisitc hitman Maguire. It's good to see him in a role where he does not play one of his type-cast characters from a chick-flick. Paul Newman deserved his oscar nomination as John Rooney, a father-like figure to Michael. Tom Hanks is good as always, the brilliant way his character could not ... Read review
