A Last Hurrah for Quality Drama
Review of Vincent - Series 1 DVD by
Volta120
Advantages: Slick and moody with excellent storylines
Disadvantages: Perhaps a little too moody for some
...***
Series Background
Vincent Gallagher (Winstone) is an ex-cop now running a team of private investigators in Manchester. They tackle anything, from insurance swindlers to benefit cheats, but the series itself deals (naturally) with the team's meatier and more dramatic investigations. Vincent is aided and abetted by his two senior assistants, Beth (Suranne Jones) and John (Ian Puleston-Davies) as well as by the two 'office juniors', a sweet single-mum, ... ...devoting his time to investigations Vincent is struggling to come to terms with his ruined love life. As the series gets under way we quickly learn that his partner, Cathy (Eva Pope), has walked out on him and moved in with one of his former police colleagues, DCI David Driscoll (Philip Glenister). The tensions between the trio will dominate the first series as will the subtle and understated attraction between Vincent and Beth.
Episode 1

Seminal French film with Brigitte Bardot
Review of Le Mepris (Subtitled) by
IsabelleMcQT
Advantages: An impressive, expansive film which breaks with tradition
Disadvantages: could frustrate those who want a traditional story
For fans of Brigitte Bardot, this film is a must-see, as she is frequently the camera's focus of attention. The camera roves over her naked body and lingers on her beautiful face - as befits the international star she already was in 1963 when this film was made. In fact it's almost a parody of the 'star-image' as used in films. One thing you quickly realise about this film is that it is always playing with cinematic imagery, always defying expectations ... ...he by no means capitulates to the Hollywood norm. This is far from being a mainstream film, in fact it is practically a comment on the constraints imposed on films by budgeting/production demands. One of the main parts of the narrative is the dynamic between the German director Fritz Lang (who plays himself) and the tyrannical American producer Jerry Prokosch (Jack Palance) who wants more sex and selling points in the film of Homer's Odysee they ...

Alfie (original 1965)
Review of Alfie DVD by
obsessive
Advantages: a product of its time. highly watchable
Disadvantages: slow in places
...performance is just brilliant.
Alfie is a story of a young cockney limo driver who is out to have a good time. Set in the 1960's, when single people - who perhaps, single men were a lot more relaxed about commitment. Of course, the perspective of the film is definitely a male one, and the women in the film do not share the same relaxed views about commitment, in fact quite the opposite. This film was made in 1965 - two years before the Abortion ... ...abortionists' - and the original 1965 Alfie offers this true raw sense of realism. The re-make whilst being highly watchable and entertaining, just did not have the same effect. In the 1965 version, Alfie's guilt and self -loathing is visible, he truly did want to change his ways in that moment. ...

Sometimes you win sometimes you loose
Review of Match Point DVD by
MI9to5
Advantages: Can be tense, shocking and unpredictable
Disadvantages: Appears to be a typical chick-flick on the surface
My reason for purchasing Match Point in the first instance was quite simple, Jonathon Rhys Myers was in it and for me that was as good an excuse as any to buy a new film. I'm so glad however that I did buy this film because not only does Rhys Myers play a fantastic part and look extremely handsome for the main but the film has become a firm favourite of mine.
Chris (Jonathon Rhys Meyers) is an Irish tennis coach who after coaching Tom, the son of ... ..."There are moments in a match when the ball hits the top of the net and for a split second it can go either forward or fall back. With a little luck it goes forward and you win. Or maybe it doesn't and you lose."
This line sums up the double-edged sword that the film is, as on more than one occasion the ball may go forward and Chris may uphold the life he has dreamed of but just as easily it may fall backwards and the world he has come to love may ...
