Go On, Take a Bite. I Dare Ya
Review of The Serpent's Kiss DVD by Entwife

Advantages: Intriguing characters skillfully portrayed, wonderful costuming and sets.
Disadvantages: Uneven pacing (too slow/too choppy in places) and it's too cryptic for most

...sin and temptation. Set in the late 1600's, Thomas Smithers (Pete Postlethwaite) is a typical citizen of the "civilized" world. He has more money than brain cells, and hardly an ounce of originality within reach. ;) Having acquired country property, he is determined to construct his bored, shallow wife the most beautiful garden imaginable. Which ought to cause everyone they know to flock about them with admiring oohs and aaahs as formal gardens are ...
...already growing wild there, or the woad that makes such wonderful, marketable blue dye. Cut it all down, damn the winds and send for the most renowned garden architect of the time, Meneer Chrome (Ewan MacGregor) himself! (Have to say I was highly amused at how one of the supporting characters insisted on calling him Manure.) While Juliana Smithers (Greta Scacchi) gives us evidence of having a bit more gray matter than her adoring husband, all his ... Read review

The Game is Afoot
Review of Murder By Decree (Wide Screen) by dadmancat

Advantages: Great blending of fact and fiction, superior cast
Disadvantages: Occasional clumsiness from the director

2001's 'From Hell' was a pretty enjoyable movie that revisited the brutal killing spree of Jack the Ripper, attempting to put a face to the murderer. It took Alan Moore's graphic novels as it's starting point and then rested rather heavily on Stephen Knight's 'Final Solution' theory as to the killer's identity. Convoluted and tenuous, disproven on countless occasions, 'The Final Solution' remains the most exciting and enticing of theories, and made ...
...'The Final Solution' was being used as the basis for an even more imaginative picture. The book was barely 2 years old, and the theory was still selling paperbacks like hotcakes, and then along came 'Murder by Decree'. Directed by Bob Clark, who I wish had something more notable than 'Porkys' in his post 'Decree' resume, and with an impressive cast, 'Decree' had one major difference from 2001's 'From Hell'. Writer John Hopkins, who had worked on ... Read review

Great Hollywood Send-Up
Review of The Player DVD by ThePolarOne

Advantages: Good central story. ‘In’ jokes. Cameos.
Disadvantages: Slow, relying heavily on characters.

...now wormed his way into the studio. The word is Griffin is on his way out. To add to this pressure, Griffin has been receiving a number of threatening postcards. He thinks they are from a writer he rudely brushed off some months previously. Deciding to confront him, he pays the writer a visit. The meeting goes very badly and when the writer shows up dead the next day, Griffin is high on the suspect list. The Player is a great send up of the entire ...
...is like. W e see the exterior of Griffin’s Hollywood studio, the camera dips back and forth between numerous key and superfluous characters, of which there are many of each. The camera rolls up to the window of Griffins office to hear movie pitches being made, The Graduate part 2, “it’s Ghost meets The Manchurian Candidate.” There is star name dropping and movie references, such as a nod to Orson Wells Touch of Evil (1958) and how its six-minute ... There will be blood - oh yes there will!!
Review of There Will Be Blood DVD by Spottydog11

Advantages: Spooky, mad movie
Disadvantages: A bit long

There Will be Blood - I think this title is very fitting for this movie. It's like a warning, there will be blood and oh my gosh, how definitely true this statement was. There Will be Blood is a 2007 film staring Daniel Day Lewis in the lead role. He actually went on to win the 2007 Academy Award for best Actor for his portrayal of Daniel Plainview. Overall the film was nominated for eight Academy Awards. The film is set in California at the turn ...
...first 15 minutes or so there is no talking and the only sounds we hear is from the spooky cello and piano music. The scenery is quite dark and definitely paints the landscape like it must have been back then. It really suits this type of work as well, the dark, loneliness of the oil fields. It makes prospecting for oil look extremely hard and dangerous and not something you want to be involved in if you are just a lowly worker. Daniel Plainview receives ... Read review

Not even worth £1!
Review of The Social Climber DVD by disasterinbloom

Advantages: There aren't any!
Disadvantages: Where do I start? Bad acting, rubbish storyline....

...figuired it didn't matter if the film itself was ruubish, as at that price was so cheap. Oh how I was wrong!..... The storyline is pretty basic, with Jennifer Love Hewitt being a spoilt rich girl who wants to "increase her social position" by climbing that 'social ladder'. Things is, I'll be honest: after an hour of the film I turned it off. I refuse to watch the rest of it! I am a fan of Miss Love Hewitt, but in this film her acting was appaling! ... Read review
