Tenko - Complete boxed set all 3 series
Review of Tenko - Complete (Box Set) by mjc121

Advantages: excellent drama very well acted
Disadvantages: no special features

This is one of the best dramas of the 1980s. The box set has all 3 series and the bonus 'reunion' episode. The series concentrates on the women's POW camp. The three series are based on real life experiences. Despite this being an excellent drama it is not the type of thing you can say 'I enjoyed watching that' Despite it having a 12 certificate I personally wouldn't recommend it as suitable for anyone under 15. During the three series we see the ...
...rations being cut, low medical supplies and death could only be around the corner for one or even all of the women. The cast are fantastic. Stephanie Cole (better known as Diana Trent in Waiting for God) as Doctor Beatrice and Burt Kwouk as the sinister Captain Yamauchi to name but two. My favorite character is probably Sister Ulrica, a Nun with attitude. Anyone who has been taught by a Nun (I went to a Catholic school, had a few Nuns teaching there) ... Read review

A collection worth owning
Review of The BBC TV Shakespeare Collection DVD by pumpkinfeatures

Advantages: A timeless collection, with a lot for your money.
Disadvantages: Seems a lot of money.

...a fantastic box set, almost The Complete Works of Shakespeare in DVD form! The range and sheer volume of plays which is covered in this box set is phenomenal. The quality of the acting is incredible, and the plays, although all in the seemingly confusing Shakespearean language are accessible due to the talent of the actors and their outstanding performances. I cannot claim to have seen every one of the plays in this collection, however the majority, ...
...my school we were shown the BBC versions of whatever play we were studying at the time. Although some, like 'King Lear', have times similar to the sections on the heath which drag, the relationships between the characters and their warped intentions are cleverly but boldly outlined. The viewer is never at a loss as to what is going on, not least because of some clever use of costume, where characters are teemed in matching or complimenting colours ... Read review

POTUS & FLOTUS
Review of The West Wing Series 1 And 2 (Box Set) by hero164

Advantages: Fantastic Dialogue, Clever and Witty
Disadvantages: Its not real

...month ago intending to watch the first two series and I currently find myself on series four. The West Wing is a fictional series set in the White House dealing with the presidency of Josiah Bartlett (Martin Sheen) and his staff as they look to govern the country. American Politics = Politics may not be everyones cup of tea, but it is facinating stuff and impressive that such a high brow topic is covered in such a high production ...
...Senate and Congress, the interaction as the protagonists struggle to enact their legislation makes up a large portion of the plot as the staff twist arms to secure crucial votes. Although the programme is told from a Democratic standpoint the constant discussions with Republicans create a counterpoint that provides multiple perspectives on the issues. In fact the frustration that is felt by the characters is good as it is not all one way traffic. ... Read review

One of my favourites of all time
Review of To Serve Them All My Days (Box Set) by frkurt

Advantages: Great story, great acting, great situations
Disadvantages: -

...with an old friend, so to speak. I got the boxed set of the wonderful miniseries, 'To Serve Them All My Days', based on the novel of the same name by R.F. Delderfield. I saw this first when I was barely a lad of sixteen or so, just at my school-leaving age and going off to university. I was amazed then at how much from 'before the war' remained true to form for school, and watching it again now twenty years later, it stands up to the test of time ...
...The settings didn't have to be changed too much to accommodate the inter-war period décor, and of course the architecture for the most part was hundreds of years older. However well done the sets and images are, this is still a teleplay about relationships and the coming of age, not just of the boys in the school, nor even of the lead character, Mr. Powlett-Jones, but really of the whole of society. The inter-war period in Britain was a fascinating ... Read review

House MD Series 1
Review of House MD Season 1 (DVD) by Dexter55

Advantages: Gripping, engaging story lines
Disadvantages: Can't think of any!

I've just finished watching House Series 1 on DVD, having come to this series late in the day. Each episode is like a self contained medical detective story. House is a great character, irascible and difficult to work with but forgiven for this because of his great intelligence and snippets of compassion that peek through. The ongoing game of one-up-manship with the hospital administrator adds spice. The story lines are good and production values ...
...an impression of what is happening inside the body, both with treatment and with illnesses. Hugh Laurie is a convincing American. The supporting cast provides a nice mix of characters and the more you watch the more you learn about their backgrounds, so their back histories unfold bit by bit. Great theme tune too! I watched 4 episodes back to back so you can tell how much I love it! ... Read review
