I watched this film a few months back, and I thought id finally write a review about it. I had heard about this film for some time now, and being a huge horror fan I wanted to see a glimpse of what it had to offer. To be honest I actually liked it. There are so many horror films out there at the moment and a large bunch of them are boring and predictable. However, Drag me to hell was original, funky and fresh, it had a great plot, which was unusual to the norm film currently in the market, and it had that suspense factor. The cast is relatively unknown; however don’t let that deter you from watching the film, as its well worth a watch.
Plot:
The film starts of in the past, the year is 1969 and we are in Mexico. A young couple along with their small son, run into a house of a wealthy woman, to help them exercise a demon that they think has possessed their small child. Their son had stolen an item from a gypsy, and the gypsy had put a curse on the young boy. The rich women tries to exercise the curse, however she is unsuccessful, the floor
beneath them opens up and suck the boy into it, as if the drag him literally underground, (into hell). Fast forward four years later and we are now in LA Christine Brown (Alison Lohman), who works in a bank, looks to be promoted to a senior position currently being offered by her boss. However, with stiff competition from a new member of staff, her boss urges her to be tougher on certain clients, to get back debt owed and be meaner. Christine is at first reluctant to do this, however she really wants the promotion and thus has no choice. Christine is sitting at her desk when Sylvia Ganush comes in and asks for another extension to her mortgage, the bank had previously given her two. The Old frail woman is clearly sick and could really do with the extension; however Christine knew deep down inside that she needs to be tougher. Christine says no to the frail women, and as the woman begs on her knees she is still greeted with a NO. The frail woman is escorted out of the bank by security. After work, Christine is in the parking lot were she is attacked by this frail woman, and a curse is placed onto her. A curse which like previous one’s would mean that she would be dragged to hell after 3 days. Will Christine be dragged to hell, what surprises will she encounter, can she stop this curse???
Cast:
Alison Lohman as Christine Brown:
I’ve never really seen her acting work before, if she’s new or what, but I think she done quite well in regards to her portrayal in this film. Her character is really a nice woman, however only after being pressured into being more strict with clients does she really get herself into trouble. Its great watching this film and the development and ultimate direction her character goes into. She’s starts seeing things once the curse is placed, and starts questioning her mental state, however once visiting a fortune teller she soon realizes her fate.
Justin Long as Professor Clayton "Clay" Dalton:
Justin Long is perhaps the only well known actor in this film, well for me anyway. I’ve seen him in Jeepers Creepers and various other comedy films and I love them. However, never did I imagine him playing a professor. He has a small role in this film, as the main character is Christine, so I can’t really give too much feedback into his character.
My view:
Overall I thought the film was good, I found it to be different and fresh. It had a unique twist to the story, we have seen many curse films, but this one was actually death defying, it does keep viewers on the edge of their seat, its got the scary factor, the jumping moments, however at the same time, its watchable. It’s not about blood or gore, but it’s more about physiologically scaring the viewers. The CGI effects are brilliant in this film, and the old gypsy woman really does look scary as hell. She’s got that sweet devil witch look to her, but when she puts the curse on Christine in the car park she really does take it to a next level. The film also has the comedy type feel to it; you can’t help but laugh at some of the cheesy moments in the film. Overall, a good film that should be watched, it’s not the best horror film, but its got to be one of the best 2009 has produced thus far.
Running time 99 minutes Budget $30,000,000 Gross revenue $58,211,728 Directed by Sam Raimi
