Dracula 1931.
Dracula, the name itself meaning (meaning the son of the devil) is enough to send anyone running for the nearest cushion to hide behind.
I Remember watching this early black and white version , when I was a kiddie with my brother and sisters, when Mum and Dad was at the Bingo.

This movie brought about the fame of the late Bela Lugosi with his portrayal of Dracula, a part which he was now used to playing as he had played Dracula on Stage for several years, and managed to bring this character to life realistically on the big screen.
Lugosi portrays Dracula as a suave, sophisticated Nobleman, with the charm and hypnotic stare that will have any ...

Advantages: Good cast, sets, competent direction, nice score Disadvantages: Uneven screenplay, too little of Dracula
...cinemas a mere six months on from 'Taste'.
Peter Sasdy would contribute 2 more films for Hammer, the potboiling 'Countess Dracula' and the much more impressive 'Hands of the Ripper' before he slid into obscurity on the back of some truly wretched horror flicks. Hammer themselves would stumble on for a few more years, but 'Taste' was certainly the last of the Dracula films to possess any thought or quality in it's production.
Released on DVD by Warners in 2004, it is another threadbare effort that gains kudos only for the superb uncut print on display. This print, a 1.85:1 anarmorphic widescreen transfer which preserves the original ratio, restores early scenes set in a brothel which were excised from US prints subsequently finding their way to these shores for television transmission. Rest assured, snakes and writhing belly dancers are...

...takes Harker prisoner in his suitably spooky castle and travels to London (the Demeter/ship scene true to the book) makes himself quite dishy by using his special powers, and stalks Ryder as Mina…in the meantime eating various rich Londoners and torturing the people of the nearby lunatic asylum…I'll leave it there as I don't want to spoil the ending!

...This film is really good, yes ok it is like the Dracula films we have all seen before, but this one is different. For some strange reason. I have to say that before I saw this film, I was sceptical too. Yet another vampire film??? But, it is better than you expect. Just as Pearl Harbor is long, drawn out and downright boring in places, this film will keep you interested right through, and even adds a new twist to the old Dracula story. This is a Wes Craven film, so that gives you an idea of what to expect. Definitely worth a look. If not now, then wait for it to come out on video or DVD. Go for it....

DVD Description
This is the first screen version of Bram Stoker's famous tale based on the smash hit stage production. Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi) arrives in London and immediately works to enrapture and transform into vampires young Lucy Weston (Frances Dade) and her friend Mina Seward (Helen Chandler). After he succeeds in turning Lucy, and Mina's health suddenly deteriorates, Mina's father (Herbert Bunston), calls in a specialist, Professor Abraham Van Helsing (Edward Van Sloan). Van Helsing quickly recognizes Dracula's vampirism, and sets about saving Mina (and in the process, becomes Dracula's archenemy). The film, arguably the most influential of the legend's film versions, launched Lugosi's career in horror movies and forever invited vampires across Hollywood's threshold, spawning many sequels and variations.
