One of the finest Tv shows broadcast in 2010 on UK television was unquestionably Downton Abbey. The period drama, set in the early twentieth century, was a huge ratings success based on the sheer quality of the show and it is a piece of TV gold that deserves a place in your DVD collection.
The series is based in England in the 1910’s and a noble family who it soon becomes apparent is at risk of loosing its entire estate to a distant cousin due to inheritance laws because of the lack of a son in the fathers lineage. The show is the brain child of Julian Fellows and the writing throughout is up to his world class standards. The main plot is merely the device that threads the episodes together and as the series progresses each episode comes with a more intriguing and gripping sub plot that cant help but be followed.
The cast assembled is just perfect with stellar performances of gravitas showcasing an array of British Talent that will be familiar to all. Each role is perfectly written and excellently acted to give the series a credibility and believability such a show deserves! The series has a “BBC” air about it but it’s a classy drama from ITV for a change, which makes a huge difference from a channel that usually broadcasts celebrity specials and such like. The success of the show has landed it a second series which I, like I am sure others are, are awaiting with baited breath.
If you want a serious piece of TV drama in a period setting go for this!An excellent, classic piece of TV that will go down in history as a triumph on all fronts!

Definately a level above the usual ITV drama, but I dont think it was as good as Upstairs Downstairs
