Having rented two thoroughly enjoyable films from www.dvdsontap.com, which were the subjects of my last two opinions, I should have suspected that that most unbreakable of legal dictums would finally catch up with me. Hollywood is clearly guilty of producing a huge number of highly forgettable films and the law of averages had decreed that it was my time to rent one. Don’t Say a Word (DSaW) is perhaps more guilty than most of sliding into the mire of mediocrity as it boasts a cast laden with talent.
Michael Douglas stars as Dr. Nathan Conrad, a gifted psychiatrist who specialises in helping troubled children. He is blessed not only with wealth, but an impossibly beautiful wife in the shapely form of Famke Jansen and the necessary ‘cute-as-a-button’ daughter completes the storybook image. Unfortunately for the film the clichés do not end here.
His return for an idyllic family Thanksgiving is interrupted by a call from fellow shrink, the criminally underused Oliver Platt, who requests he ply his trade on troubled Elizabeth (Brittany Murphy). The next morning Conrad wakes to find his daughter has been abducted and is warned that she will be killed unless he uses his God-given talents to extract a number from the locked room that is Elizabeth’s mind. The number in question is a clue to the location to a jewel stolen ten years previously by Sean Bean and his gang which was in turn pilfered by none other than Elizabeth’s dad. Yawn.
In order to keep us on our toes, director Gary Fleder keeps cutting between the various elements of the story that are slowly coming together. Conrad’s sessions with Elizabeth complete with flashbacks, his daughters attempts to use her own psychological tricks on one of her captors, his wife’s various struggles and cop Jennifer Esposito’s slow piecing together of seemingly unrelated incidents. It all leads to an uninspiring denouement in a horribly over-used setting, the foggy graveyard.
As you may have guessed I was not overly enamoured with DSaW, it’s not that it’s a terrible film its just all been done before and with far greater success. Douglas, like De Niro in the similarly unimpressive The Score, is merely going through the motions. The superior Ransom to which DsaW bears more than a passing resemblance illustrates the problem with Douglas in roles like this. In scenes where the leading man needs to become physical, Gibson in Ransom looks formidable, Douglas veers more towards the laughable yet they are but 2 years different in age. Personally I would like to see him return to roles like that of the relaxed English professor in the subtle but brilliant comedy Wonder Boys.
Sean Bean takes on the role a head thug but other than looking and sounding the part is not really given much time to develop the character. Both Platt and Jansen suffer a similar fate with far too little screen time, confining their characters to two-dimensional stereotypes. Murphy emerges with the most credit as her performance is credible and contains at least some emotion so noticeably lacking elsewhere.
Fleder’s attempt to keep us in suspense with his constant cutting between stories doesn’t really succeed. The central premise is so ridiculous that suspending disbelief is a very trying task. In a move that stretches credibility even further, Bean’s thugs are equipped with an unbelievably impressive array of high-tech surveillance equipment for the pursuit of a jewel valued at just $10 million. Prompted the question, “Why bother?”
The investigation scenes with Esposito are initially so removed from the central story that it is a distraction, when it all becomes clear my reaction was much more in the “Who Cares?” camp than the “Ahh, Very Clever” train of thought. As for the countdown, an essential element in any true suspense, the story never really engrossed me enough for me to care and the contrived ending proved irritating.
Maybe it’s my cynicism coming to the fore; maybe in a different mood this would have kept me on the edge of my seat. Personally I doubt it, this is just another example of Hollywood showing unforgivable disdain for their audience, recycling tired plot lines and clichéd characters and hoping that the appeal of a star-studded cast will make people overlook the mediocrity of the film. If you want a decent suspense movie rent Panic Room or, for the real thing, any of Hitchcock’s vastly superior offerings. This is only for devoted Douglas fans.
Tomatometer: A woeful 23% - Rating taken from the excellent www.rottentomatoes.com Running Time: 118 Minutes
Advantages: Exciting and full of intrigue. Disadvantages: None.
I thought Don't Say a Word was an outstanding psychological thriller, it was exciting and mind bending, it really keeps you thinking about what on earth is happening from beginning to end.
The basics of this film are as follows:
The film is all about the robbery of a $10 million gem where two men ou of the gang take the stone leaving the person in charge of the robbery, Patrick, very angry. The film is actually set 10 years later but include flashbacks ... ...to meet Dr Nathan R Conrad who is a child psychiatrist, he is asked to meet with a teenage patient, Elizabeth. She is a very disturbed person who has very child like qualities. Patrick, having recently been released from prison, and his gang break into an apartment that they use as a base to keep an eye on Dr Conrads wife, Aggie. (she has a broken leg so is stuck in her room) The gang also kidknap the couples daughter, Jessie. This is all done so ...

Advantages: Quite a unique film Disadvantages: A little slow at times
I selected to see this film when I wanted a quite night in with my boyfriend. I was a little reluctant at first as I didn't believe it was my sort of film. However, you can hardly complain when you see the first 15mins, it captivates you in a way you do not expect. I thought the storyline with the young girl was a great way to go... little hints that you do not expect are hidden within the story which to me is great as I am a media student and love ...

Advantages: None Disadvantages: Bad picture, bad sound, non-anormorphic, no extras
A wonderful film let down by a shoddy disc.Bueana Vista have done a terrible dis-service to Pulp Fiction and to DVD users, by giving it us featureless DVD with a really not very good at all picture.
I bought mine and promptly took it back, it's just not what I bought into DVD for.
On the other hand if you have a multi region DVD player then the Australian Region 4 verison is superb, it has an excellent picture, excellent sound, extras, in other words it's how it should be over here.
I would saydon't buy this DVD over here because it as though we are being taken for a ride. ...
Advantages: Great family film Disadvantages: Not available to buy in this country
good and I have been told that it was very similar to the film 'It's a Wonderful Life' but again this is another film I have not seen so I cannot on the similarities.
The film did not have a very memorable soundtrack, but this was not a big issue as the acting and the story was involving enough to stop you loosing interest. The run time of 106 minutes was the right length as they did not try to drag the story out for a longer film as this would have spoilt it completely.
INFO
The film was made in 2002, it was produced by Laurence Marks and Directed by James Orr and Jim Cruickshank.
The film has a run time of 106 minutes. There is no certificate on my copy of the DVD (probably due to being a Dutch import) but I would say it is a good family film if you don't mind the odd swear word.
There are no extras on this DVD only ...

Advantages: Riveting plot, fantastic acting, brilliant direction Disadvantages: Box is plain, only a few special features, no commentaries
on the edge of your seat, you will find out the true cost of desiring something so much that you won't stop at anything to get it. I would really recommend this film to anyone, it was absolutely brilliant - the acting was superb, the directing fantastic and the atmosphere was just right.
Before I end this review, I want to say a few words about the DVD itself. The box is nothing special (at least my version of it isn't, I don't know whether they made a special edition) - it has a fairly plain sleeve and no inserts. The DVD comes with the following three extras: Director's Notebook: The Prestige - The Cinematic Sleight of Hand of Christopher Nolan: five making-of featurettes; the art of the prestige: production photos, costumes/sets, behind-the-scenes photos and poster art galleries; theatrical trailer. I have watched the Director's Notebook ...

DVD Description
When psychiatrist Nathan Conrad discovers that his daughter has been kidnapped, the only way he can get her back is to pry critical information from the mind of a seriously disturbed teenager (Brittany Murphy) with a secret stuck deep in a blocked memory. The Conrads are the prototypical happy family: Nathan, a successful doctor (Michael Douglas); his loving wife, Aggie (Famke Janssen), who is bedridden with a broken leg suffered in a skiing accident; and eight-year-old Jessie (Skye McCole Bartusiak), an extemely intelligent and well-loved young girl. But late one night Jessie is abducted and used as collateral for a dangerous group of men who will stop at nothing to recover a stolen 10-million-dollar jewel. Gary Fleder (KISS THE GIRLS) has crafted an excellent thriller shot on the streets of New York City, getting help from a fine supporting cast, including Oliver Platt as one of Dr. Conrad's medical colleagues, Jennifer Esposito as a cop out to get to the bottom of a series of unexplained murders, and Sean Bean as a violent criminal who will kill anyone who gets in his way. But this is Douglas's movie, starring as a loving family man and dedicated doctor who has to compromise his ethics in order to save his daughter's life and free a teenager from a dangerous psychosis.
