DOGMA (1999) DVD - SPECIAL EDITION
THE STORY: - When two fallen angels, Bartleby (Ben Affleck) and Loki (Matt Damon) who have been banished from heaven by God (Alannis Morrisette), find about about a religious loophole that will allow them to return to heaven, it is up to a band of mis-fits to try and stop them.
The good guys comprise of two stoner's Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) as mis-guideed prophets who must help a women (Linda Fiorentino) get to the church where the Angels plan to ascend, the 13th Apostle (Chris Rock), the muse Serendipity (Salma Hayek) and now and again the voice of god the Mettatron (Alan Rickman) provides sagely advice to the group.
Opposing them is the Golgothan (a sh@t demon), a fallen muse Azrael (Jason Lee) and the sygian triplets.
The only thing the angels don't realise is that if they get back into heaven they will be responsbile for the end of the world.
EXTRAS: - If you've read any of my previous posts where I've reviewed all of the New Jersey Trilogy films on DVD (all spec editions in one way or another), then you'll know how I feel about the extra features on the DVDs that View Askew produce. This one is no exception.
Audio Commentary with Kevin Smith (Writer / Director / Star), Scott Mosier (Producer), Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Jason Mewes, Vincent Perrera (View Askew historian);
Technical Audio Commentary Track featuring Smith, Mosier
and Perrera;
Deleted Scenes with introductions/explanations by Kevin Smith and Vincent Pereira;
Outtakes;
Jay and Silent Bob Secret Stash Advert;
Saints and SInners feature - cast and crew filmographies;
Theatrical Trailer;
Three sets of storyboards from three sequences from the film;
Compared to the other three commentaries this has to be the worst. At times the members of the panel talk about anything but the movie. The producer of the film at the end of this track was disgusted by this and insisted that they record a technical track, which also makes an appearance, I was pretty disapointed after listening to this as most of the time nothing of interest is said, although it is at times funny and there are the odd few nuggets of information thrown in. The technical track that is present on the DVD should only lisened to if you're actually interested in making a film. This track is for the film students, it's the more informative track of the two. Discussing such aspects as casting choices, choice of film, choice of location, production hints etc.
Deleted Scenes - there's some fantastic clips here. A scene in which Jay and Silent Bob do Karáoke is included, a section of the film that was cut to reduce the film's time. As for the rest of it, it's mostly extended scenes which they had to trim again to get the movie to an acceptable length.
Easter Eggs. On each disc there is a hidden feature. They are 'How Kevin Smith thinks Jay Acts' and 'How Jay thinks Kevin Smith directs' funny stuff, worth a couple of looks. To access the scene follow the instructions given below: -Disc 1:
Select Scene Selections;
Hit More until you're at the last page
Hit the number '3' twice on your remote control Disc 2:
Select Deleted Scenes;
Hit More until you're at the the last page;
Hit the number 2 and then 4 on your remore control
THE VERDICT: - A film surrounded by controversy even before a single frame of film had been shot due to it's take on religion. After the script appeared on the 'net it was read by some religous group that took offence due to the way that religion itself was being potrayed. Things really took off when the director started to receive death threats to him and his family. Not being a big fan of religion, the controversy was lost on me and I think all it did was save the advertising budget of the film and make more people to to see the film.However on a lighter note it's nice to see a big studio giving Kevin Smith the respect he deserves and actually trusting him to make a movie that costs as much as it did (£10,000,000). Although this is a relatively small budget to most main stream films these days compare it to clerks (£25k approx) or Chasing Amy (£350k) and you get an idea of the difference. The movie did relatively well too, making about £30,000,000 at the box office which is a fantastic achievement. Although not my favourite View Askew film to date (that honour is reseved for mallrats, allthough judging by the buzz that Jay and Silent Bob Strikes back is getting, mallrats could be coming in at a close second.) it is up there with best of them. The humour is spot on, the acting tremendous from all the leads and the story is very original to say the least.
However this movie has been criticised for having too much going on and that there is, just looking at the cast list alone compared to a 'normal film' it's huge. This was the first film that I had seen of the so called View Askewniverse, and when I walked away from the cinema I felt confused as to what I had seen. I wasn't quite sure if I liked it or not. It took a second viewing to win me around. So be prepared it could be a bit hit or miss to most of you out there.

TRIVIA: - With all the controversy surrounding the film (read first paragraph of verdict) a small group of people protested outside of the premiere, one of the protesters was none other than the writer/director kevin smith, holding up a placcard that read 'Dogma is Dog Sh#t'.
Further adding to the complications surrounding this movie was the fact that the original distributor (can't remember the name) took flack from the protestors and then refused to release the movie. Negotiations took place at the thirteenth hour and Columbia Tristar picked it up.
