I first saw Dog Soldiers round a friends mid Last year, the very next week I brought it for myself on DVD. It is simply brilliant, best described as addictive and it is one of those films you can watch over and over again, still getting the same amount of excitement you received from the first time you watched it!
Dog Soldiers is classed as an action-horror, but I believe a wide – ranged audience can enjoy it. It is a fun film, filled with dark comedy, classy worth – while action and some intense horror. Basically all round enjoyment, never a boring or dull moment.
From a different angle, I think you have to appreciate the fact that the majority of the filming crew were basically all amateurs. The director of the feature – Neil Marshal, I believe was actually given help funding the movie from the ‘Luxembourg film fund’, only being Neil’s second film presentation, which he also wrote. As well as that, it was a first for actor Darren Morrfit and Emma Cleasby.
Released on the big screen early last year, generally critics thought of it as quite an enjoyable achievement, due to the low budget the film was kept to. However, I think this in no way spoils the movie, only really noticing the werewolf’s not being 100% realistic.
The dramatic background music goes well with the action scenes of the movie and the Scottish scenery you see, is magnificent.
All in all, irresistible, fun, action-packed and a definite must own on DVD!!!!
About the Movie – In short (as usual some vital plots points may be revealed). Set in the Scottish highlands, being an English film, the movie is about a group of Scottish soldiers on a training mission, miles away from civilisation.
The film starts off with an impressive helicopter sequence, hovering over the middle of a forest, whilst the team of soldiers drop - down slide ropes into the woods. This is the start of their training mission.
They are in the middle of no-where, to train for real life combat situations. Their opposition is ‘Special Forces’. From what they know it is a harmless excise where both teams are armed with only blank bullets.
The Scots pursue their opposition day and night, where eventually they are strangely signalled by them from a flare. The team push on to greet the worrying signal only to find, their band of Special Forces opposition have been torn to pieces leaving blood, guts but no body parts. Only Captain Ryan, (Liam Cunningham) the leader of the group remained, but badly injured.
While assisting the loud screaming Ryan, the group found that the Special Forces were all carrying loaded weapons, (although they didn’t get one shot off). So realising they are up against live targets, a quick change of weapons and then they start to leave the woods before nightfall.
However, whilst leaving, they come under attack from unknown enemies and only just manage to get away, thanks to passer by Megan (Emma Cleasby), and her four-wheel drive who managed to hear the gunfire. Loosing their predators Megan gives them shelter at a nearby farmhouse. Here she explains that they are being hunted by a pack of werewolf’s, that she has tried to study for months. Being it a full moon, their only feeding time, she explains that they will stop at nothing to get their tea.
Anyway, now the group of soldiers have a sort of base and for a large part of the film fight the ‘wolfs from the door’ with automatic weapons, providing you with excitement and classy action-set pieces. They just have to survive till daylight to be able to move out of the farmhouse to get help and medical attention.
The film is filled with jumps, excitement and unexpected twists and turns, which I have managed not to spoil. Like the reason the Special Forces squad were carrying live weapons and how they manage to survive till daylight!
A brilliant film, which I suggest, you watch, being a horror fan or not.
Background to the Movie.
Dog Soldiers is certificated at a 15.
Compatible with Surround Sound.
Comes normally on a Widescreen disc, Dolby digital sound, and subtitles.
The film is approximately 101 minutes long (1 hour and 41 minutes long).
Sadly the film didn’t win any awards.
It was filmed in Scotland, made in 2002, produced by the carousel picture company and distributed by 20th Century Fox.
It was written by Neil Marshall, (Combat) as well as Directed by him. But with the support of the Luxemburg film fund.
Main Cast: Sean Pertwee (51st State) – as Sgt. Harry Wells Kevin McKidd (Trainspotting) – as Cooper Liam Cunningham (First Knight) – as Captain Ryan Darren Morrfit (Making Waves: TV) – as Witherspoon And Emma Cleasby – as Megan
The DVD is impressive, which comes with lots of extra features including commentaries and documentaries.
My Evaluation:
Definitely a favourite, like I have mentioned the best werewolf film I have ever seen.
The action pieces are fantastic, music well chosen, and the camera angles are filmed brilliantly. Although not very experienced I thought the cast were also quite well chosen.
The film is addictive and can be watched over and over again, I think mainly due to frequent tense, exciting and fun action set pieces. Even funny at times.
The film I think is a must have for all serious Horror film collectors and anyone that likes action.
A masterpiece!! I hope you found my review helpful.
Advantages: Scary. Excellent special effects. Some good 'one liners'. Disadvantages: Still not as good as "An American Werewolf in London".
~ ~ There seems to have been a bit of a dearth of decent movies on the new releases shelves of the local video shop just recently. Or maybe it’s just that the ‘mad cabbie’ is becoming more selective in his viewing these days.
Anyhow, the weather here in Dublin has been so bad the last couple of days, (50mm of rain in two days!!) that last night I found myself frantically scanning the new titles in the hope of finding something ... ...the fire. I have to admit that I picked up the DVD “Dog Soldiers” (2002) with no great enthusiasm, but the blurb on the back cover at least looked promising. Soldiers attacked by werewolves in a remote Scottish glen.
“Should at least provide a wee bit of gore and action”, I thought.
And believe me, I wasn’t disappointed.
~ ~ I haven’t really watched a werewolf movie that I could honestly say that I thoroughly ...

Then from a behind the eye view, you see a large shadow elope over the trembling guy and WHAM! The titles hit the screen DOG SOLDIERS!

MY VEIW:
Dog Soldiers is a fairly low budget all British made film but is in my eyes, one of the best films of the year.
We are told that these creatures are actually Lycanthropes (werewolves) and that they are extremely intelligent and will hunt in a pack until they find a way of breaking down the soldier’s defenses.
Will they succeed?
You’ll have to watch it and find out.
The film couples some genuinely freaky moments, ...

Advantages: Good entertainment, likeable cast, moves along at a terrific pace Disadvantages: Not for the faint-hearted, predictable
The last time I saw a movie at the cinema with soldiers in uniform, spraying bullets about was twenty-five years ago in Penrith on route to a holiday in Scotland. The film was ‘The Eagle has Landed’, and proved to be an interesting experience with the whole audience cheering the goodies and booing the baddies at every opportunity and generally participating to an extent I’d not seen since the Saturday morning flicks of the early ... ...a thoroughly good night out. Not a bad film either, but pretty tame compared to the blood and gore prevalent in today’s entertainment. Nowadays when I go to the cinema its usually to see something lighthearted like 'Bend it like Beckham’ or 'Chicago' and I tend to watch the heavier or more violent stuff on Satellite or Video – where a stiff drink is readily available and I can switch off if the going gets tough. However breaking ...

...from his drooling lips.
Dog Soldiers is not filled with the usual 21st century, ‘all-singing, all-dancing’ Hollywood special effects. Neither is the cast list crammed with ‘big names’. You’d probably have heard of Sean Pertwee, who plays one of the lead roles, in Sgt Harry Wells. Maybe you’ve seen Darren Morfitt (Phil Witherspoon) before, if you have seen Sky TV Soccer soap ‘Dream Team’ (he played Dean Hocknall in the first couple of series) – but ... ...show, undoubtedly, is another Brit, Kevin McKidd. As Rifleman Cooper, the Scots actor gives a fine, gritty and powerful performance. Previously seen in various TV Dramas and in low key roles in movies such as ‘Trainspotting’ and ‘Hideous Kinky’, McKidd should be in line for more meaty roles after this showing.
Anyway – what’s it all about?
The film opens with a couple camping in the wilds of the Scottish Highlands. Their attempted lovemaking is ...

hour into the clastrophobic caves are jumpy and have some great tention and the beasts add a great deal of fear which make everything come together.
the main problem though is when the film kicks in the camera is all over the place and you struggle to understand what is going on and who your following within the film, which inturn ruins all the hard work done to bring up the finale. who start getting confused if someone died or what happened to them.
fortunatly after all the chaotic action and things slow down the film gets back on track and uses the sense of paranioa trapped surrounded by the dark to great affect which will leave you satisfied when the end credits role...... Something to not over look

Advantages: A guy from Belfast in it Disadvantages: Expensive, crap, not scary
the film a lot was that they found this Nazi film reel in the bunker and put it on and in the middle of this film there is a Nazi propaganda cartoon. This cartoon is so ridiculous for a start but what's worse is that it is a really modern style of animation I don't think they had 20 years ago never mind 70.
Overall I would not recommend this film and I will be selling my copy on as soon as possible as I couldn't be bothered with it anymore. It gave the impression of trying to be DogSoldiers but this film has none of the excitement or horror of DogSoldiers and is a very weak impression. Apparently there's a planned sequel as this one went straight to DVD in the U.S and limited cinema distribution elsewhere, I don't see the point.
I first realised this DVD would be crap on the way home. I had made two purchases that day. One was 13 ...

A routine exercise takes an unexpected turn when the troop discovers ravaged corpses out in the woods. With dusk quickly turning to night, and an ominous full moon lighting up the sky, the men (including Sean Pertwee and Kevin McKidd) decide to hide out in an abandoned farmhouse. With their supplies and morale both in short supply, the soldiers become trapped in the house by a pack of hungry werewolves who seem hellbent on enjoying the men for dinner. Can anything stop these relentless lycanthropes
