What's under the filthiest of skins?
Advantages: Intimate and knowledgable Disadvantages: Some meaningless asides
Julien Temple’s first documentary about The Sex Pistols, The Great Rock and Roll Swindle, often gets criticised for its bias towards Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren’s version of events and for the fact that it didn’t include John Lydon’s input at all. The Filth and the Fury was much better-received, giving all the band members as well as McLaren time to tell their own stories. If anything, it’s biased more towards Lydon’s point of view – or at least, ... ...The film sets the scene of lower-class life in the UK in the 70s, showing a grim world of repression, boredom and grime, then charts The Sex Pistols’ rise to infamy, feuds and eventual break-up, interspersing interviews and live clips (though I’m thinking not live sound recordings, most of the time) with clips of Richard III (to whom Lydon compared himself) as played by Olivier, animation of the band, archive footage and various British comics playing ...

He Just Wanted To Be Loved!
Advantages: excellent acting and story, amazing fight scenes, showed both the good and bad Disadvantages: None from me
...tell me just how good Tyson was back in his day so when I spotted this DVD I though it would be good to learn about the man and see just how good he was.
The film starts with Mike being a young boy and getting into scrapes with the other kids in his area, he was a troubled young boy and by the time he was 13 he had been arrested over 35 times. Mike got a break with something that he loved by Cus D’Amato when he was spotted in the ring in his local ... ...wife and soon changed his ways and proved what a good fighter he was. We are shown Mike making his way through the amateur circuit and finally being given the professional status and having his legendry title fight at the age of 20. Despite being dedicated to his boxing we do see that there is still a dark side to Mike and this is apparent when he goes after the ladies. Of course we all know the outcome of the fight and Mike went on to become the ...

Elite Documentary about an Elite unit.
Advantages: makes you think, can be motivating Disadvantages: none
...faced bunch of Royal Marine Commando recruits all the way through 32 weeks of basic training. With complete access to every part of the training process he follows the good times and the bad of each of the recruits and something that I felt made the documentary that little more exciting was that he also took part in the training himself, Chris Terrill was 55 years old. The Program was originally aired in 2007 for ITV; at the beginning you see the ... ...of becoming a Royal Marine Commando and receiving the coveted Green Beret so that they can become elite soldiers that look a million miles away from the guys that they were 32 weeks earlier. After the 32 weeks training Chris follows a few of the successful soldiers when they are posted to Afghanistan for a tour of duty, as well as a new officer who takes up his post in Afghanistan for his first tour with a mainly rookie company of men. I managed ...

Eye level is buy level!!
Advantages: Cheap prices Disadvantages: Cheap labour
With the slave trade debate raging last year during the 200 commerations its always important to note that not only is that particular trade is still alive and well in the third world but its as good as here in its modern form in companies like Wal-Mart. Well meaning and angry people may well protest alongside some vegetarians banging a drum in London about what happened 200 years ago but most of the labeled clothing we are wearing will have been ... ...the products piled high in the huge shopping arenas of Wal-Mart and the like are the products of cheap and exploited labor somewhere around the world and when the documentary explores those sweat shops in South East Asia our arguments of reparation begin to fragment. In one segment you see young Chinese girls living in cramped dorms in a grubby factory, the gates locked at night, weekly rent and utilities deducted from their meager pay packets, whether ...
