Life on Earth - David Attenborough
Review of Life On Earth DVD by
ivytoad
Advantages: So educational and interesting. Beautiful footage
Disadvantages: None what so ever!
...for my boyfriend of 'The Life of Mammals'. We went a bit David Attenborough crazy and decided we were going to buy all of 'The Life Collection' series. This was the second box set from David Attenborough that we bought.
This series basically tells us about the development of life on our planet over 3.5 billion years! It is an amazing piece of work.
The dvd set has four discs with a total of 13 episodes on them.
The dvds have a total running time ... ...about the first evidence of life on our planet.
Episode 2: Building Bodies - Tells about creatures appearing in the oceans.
Episode 3: The First Forests - How some creatures and plants left the oceans to go to land and how the plants developed in to trees.
Episode 4: The Swarming Hordes - How some insects colonised in order to protect themselves and dominate areas.
Episode 5: The Conquest of the Waters - All about fishes!
Episode 6: The Invasion ...

WOW!!
Review of Great Wildlife Moments With David Attenborough (Wide Screen) by
blammo
Advantages: Beautifully made
Disadvantages: not long enough
What a beautifully made documentary. You can really lose yourself in the sceneries you see on screen and before you know it your booking an adventure holiday to the congo. Sir David Attenborough brings such charisma and passion forward you wish to be in his shoes. My personal favourite moment is when Sir Attenborough is with the gorillas-what magnificent animals, you can really see their different personalities and facial expressions. Sir David manages ... ...animals.
I can not say there is anything I disliked about 'Great Wildlife Moments' apart from the horrid thought that most of the animals featured will be extinct in 20 years!
Whether you are watching this DVD for educational interests or personal interests it is deffinatly a worth while buy. ...

Bob Dylan - No Direction Home - Film Only
Review of No Direction Home: Bob Dylan DVD by
DavidJay
Advantages: Masterfully edited, full of astounding footage both familiar and otherwise...a classic.
Disadvantages: None.
...rarely-seen footage and interview material, No Direction Home is, for the first half at least, as much about America in the pause-for-breath moment between the beat writers of the 1950s and the counter-culture student movements of the mid-to-late 1960s as it is about the life and work of Robert Zimmerman. It is - clichéd as it sounds - a sweeping, engrossing portrait of a time and of a place, scouring the terrain leads from the rattle-tattle zap-pow ... ...of Odetta's acoustic guitar, from the wandering shoes of Neil Cassidy to those of Woody Guthrie.
Dylan features heavily throughout this section of the film, of course, but he is very much a character-in-the-making. When he does take centre-stage in time for the second half (the film is, incidentally, almost four hours long), it is via some of the most compelling footage available, some of it assumed lost or destroyed.
A talking heads documentary ...

The Killing Of America
Review of Killing Of America DVD by
DavidJay
Advantages: Uncompromising, thought-provoking meld of exploitation and propaganda.
Disadvantages: Morally disturbing, apparently uncertain of its audience at times.
...Executions. Like the latter, The Killing Of America parades its grotesqueries (sundry assassinations, beatings, slaughters...) in the service of a core political message - a message which, in this instance, is almost as disturbing as the carnage onscreen. The film almost seems to call for vigilante justice, and a reactionary, right-wing tone informs most every scene. It is, however, a fascinating picture in its own right, a strange, curious meld ...
