SYNOPSIS
This wildlife special from the BBC finds its home in the idyllic setting of the Karha National Park in India, where the film focusses on the trials of a 12 year old tigress named Lakshmi. The cameras record the tribulations ... ...as is possible in this wildlife special.
From the burnt yellows, oranges and blacks of an indian sunrise through the full gamit of greens and browns of the lush tropical forest, Houseman's camera work reveals the full palette of a paradise where the tiger's own magnificence is perfectly in key. There is barely a single shot in this documentary that is not exquisitely framed, yet this is not artistic license as each individual visual is part of a ...

The best documentary of the 90's
Review of Microcosmos (Wide Screen) by
gantzgraf
Advantages: A superb documentary. Amazing.
Disadvantages: None.
An epic documentary.
Microcosmos is an award-winning French documentary directed by Claude Nuridsany and Marie Pérennou. It was shot in l'Aveyron, a département of the Midi-Pyrénées region in southern France, named after the Aveyron river.
Microcosmos was the first documentary, back in 1996, to use high-technology camera equipment to capture the infinitely small world of insects. Nowadays, the same techniques are applied in most TV documentaries ... ...go deeper still... and finally Microcosmos begins. Wonderful.
You will encounter the most exotic insects ever, as well as some common ones. These are Microcosmos's cast. The list is never-ending:
Beautiful rainbow-coloured butterflies, long-tailed caterpillars, duelling Dung beetles, strange underwater spiders, swallow-tail butterflies, Burgundy snails, stag beetles, ferocious red ants, peacock moths... and many more.
My favourite part (you can't ...

Bob Dylan - No Direction Home - Film Only
Review of No Direction Home: Bob Dylan DVD by
DavidJay
Advantages: Masterfully edited, full of astounding footage both familiar and otherwise...a classic.
Disadvantages: None.
...rarely-seen footage and interview material, No Direction Home is, for the first half at least, as much about America in the pause-for-breath moment between the beat writers of the 1950s and the counter-culture student movements of the mid-to-late 1960s as it is about the life and work of Robert Zimmerman. It is - clichéd as it sounds - a sweeping, engrossing portrait of a time and of a place, scouring the terrain leads from the rattle-tattle zap-pow ... ...of Odetta's acoustic guitar, from the wandering shoes of Neil Cassidy to those of Woody Guthrie.
Dylan features heavily throughout this section of the film, of course, but he is very much a character-in-the-making. When he does take centre-stage in time for the second half (the film is, incidentally, almost four hours long), it is via some of the most compelling footage available, some of it assumed lost or destroyed.
A talking heads documentary ...

The Killing Of America
Review of Killing Of America DVD by
DavidJay
Advantages: Uncompromising, thought-provoking meld of exploitation and propaganda.
Disadvantages: Morally disturbing, apparently uncertain of its audience at times.
...Executions. Like the latter, The Killing Of America parades its grotesqueries (sundry assassinations, beatings, slaughters...) in the service of a core political message - a message which, in this instance, is almost as disturbing as the carnage onscreen. The film almost seems to call for vigilante justice, and a reactionary, right-wing tone informs most every scene. It is, however, a fascinating picture in its own right, a strange, curious meld ...
