END THE X FACTOR
Review of The X Factor - Revealed DVD by
thegreengoblin
Advantages: NONE
Disadvantages: PLENTY
...but its time to pull the plug on the whole X Factor show. Its now become a joke with this years audition programmes being boring. The actual selecting of the chosen few to go from boot camp to the live shows proving to be a farce with two new bands being chosen made out of the reject young men and women. The first of the live shows last weekend proving that the 12 acts on offer are rubbish and Xmas came early with the usual panto hysterics of Sharon. ... ...real talent on offer from the star and I certainly would of enjoyed listening to the radio and watching television the past couple of years without Brookstein,G4, Shaney and Leona. Also I may be a traditionalist but I like my Xmas number 1 to be a xmas song not a reality star winners so called single which always gives me more indigestion than stuffing my face with turkey.
To make matters worse we find out now over the years of X Factor many peoples ...

loudQUIETloud (A Film About The Pixies)
Review of The Pixies - loudQUIETloud (A Film About The Pixies) by
greenierexyboy
Advantages: Behind the scenes with one of the most influential bands in rock
Disadvantages: Unless you're Spinal Tap, tours aren't a natural for a linear documentary
...an internationally representative level on the subject of the Pixies. A "most influential rock band of the last 25 years" here, a "staggering use of loud/soft quick/fast" dynamics" there. They emerged, almost fully formed, in 1987, recorded five (well, four and a half) seismically memorable albums, and then split in 1992 amidst acrimony; singer Black Francis informing the media before his bandmates, then tossing them a cursory fax afterwards. The ... ...was one sure thing in the music biz, it was that they would NEVER reform.
In 2004, they reformed.
In their absence, their fame had grown; the platitudes of Kurt Cobain and countless others, the iconic use of "Where Is My Mind?" at the end of "Fight Club", all had served to elevate their stock. A rabid audience could scarcely believe it; for years, the two most obviously warring elements, Black Francis and bassist/vocalist Kim Deal, had refused ...

School's in for Rocking!
Review of Rock School - The Complete First Series DVD by
Ailran
Advantages: Paul Green, the kids, the music, the direction, everything!
Disadvantages: Not much, maybe the music if you really hate Zappa
...man. He runs his own Rock School in Philadelphia where he imparts his musical wisdom to a number of 9-16 year olds, and whatever you think of his methods they certainly seem to work. Rock School the documentary (surely School of Rock must have been based on Green and his school?) follows Green around as he prepares his kids for a couple of shows. A Black Sabbath tribute one for his new and less accomplished students and a performance at a Zappa convention ... ...is as good as most rock guitarists will ever be, how a kid that age can be so good I just do not know but when you see him, almost hidden by his guitar, you just sit there open mouthed at his ability to play.
Then there is Madi, a bright, good looking young girl who wants to be a Sheryl Crow like performer and is always arguing with Green (in fact she is the one student who not only stands their ground with him but gives him as good as she gets ...

Life In The Freezer - David Attenborough
Review of Life In The Freezer DVD by
ivytoad
Advantages: So interesting, fun to watch, educational
Disadvantages: I want more episodes!!
I really love 'The Life Collection' from David Attenborough. The complete series of 'Life in the Freezer' was the third dvd of the collection that I bought.
The series itself has six episodes which are all on one disc. They were originally transmitted in 1993.
The six episodes are:
Episode 1: The Bountiful Sea - All about the Southern Antarctic Ocean and the species in it
Episode 2: The Ice Retreats - About when Spring comes and the wildlife ... ...the extreme conditions and how life continues, against all the odds.
Episode 6: Footsteps In The Snow - The first man to stand in the South Pole and the struggle to get there.
The dvd has a total running time of 174 minutes and each episode is around 30 minutes long.
There are no special features on this dvd apart from the option of 'scene selection', this is quite a common feature on dvds these days, and nothing that special but it is nice and ...
