Try out Time Team you'll love it!
Advantages: Great classic time team with all the Team Disadvantages: Your favourite dig may not be in there
...Never seen it? Well heres the premise: Tony Robinson presents it, the Team do some research into a site which needs to be archaelogically dug then he acts like the layman and asks lots of questions about what they are digging and what they are finding and tries to get them to uncover the myseries of the site.
But the archaelogists really make this programme. Mick is the chief arch and he looks like a mad professor with long wispy hair and never ... ...on his bike looking at the geometry of the area. John is the geophysics guy who picks up all the electro magnetic activity and stuff to guide them to where they dig and lastly theres Phil, this guy has so much energy, hes a west country chap with just so much enthusaism for what he finds it just sucks you in.
Anyway, to the DVD! This DVD is a great one for getting into Time Team because it has all the interesting episodes on it! I mean, Time Team ...

Films from 110 years ago
Advantages: Great films Disadvantages: I wanted more!
...only vaguely interested in the early days of cinema, you really do need to get this special 2 DVD set.
Because when the British Film Institute says early, they mean really early! The earliest film in this collection dates back to 1895. Yes! That's right! 1895! You can see gems like Sortie d'usine, which is a film taken of workers leaving the Lumiere factory in Lyon, France. One amusing point in this film I that a dog rushes out with all of the workers ... ...is Demolition d'un mur, of early 1896, which shows him overseeing the demolition of a wall at the factory. Apparently, when this film was shown, they would also play it backwards, just for the fun of it.
You might have seen stills taken from Arrivee de Congressistes a Nueville-sur-Saone, when Lumiere filmed members of the Congress of Photographic Societies arriving for a meeting, stepping from a steam launch. Mostly men, but some women, too. Also, ...

A half hour too far
Advantages: Great cast, epic military scenes Disadvantages: Very long, not always compelling
No doubt this film did need to be this long (and at nearly 3 hours it is long) since this military exercise was of huge significance and of huge scale.
When i recently watched this film for a second time i really did start to struggle to keep focussed on the film. There are large chunks of the film which although necessary, really do nothing to grip the viewer and let the mind wonder to other things.
Now the film has some great redeeming points. ... ...ever seen in one film with the likes of Dirk Bogarde, James Caan, Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier and Robert Redford all in great form in their own right.
The plot is based around Operation Market Garden which, during WW2, was the biggest airborne mission ever attempted.
Briefly, the plan was to drop several airborne divisions into different parts of Holland, capture all the bridges along the main highway ...

Elite Documentary about an Elite unit.
Advantages: makes you think, can be motivating Disadvantages: none
...faced bunch of Royal Marine Commando recruits all the way through 32 weeks of basic training. With complete access to every part of the training process he follows the good times and the bad of each of the recruits and something that I felt made the documentary that little more exciting was that he also took part in the training himself, Chris Terrill was 55 years old. The Program was originally aired in 2007 for ITV; at the beginning you see the ... ...of becoming a Royal Marine Commando and receiving the coveted Green Beret so that they can become elite soldiers that look a million miles away from the guys that they were 32 weeks earlier. After the 32 weeks training Chris follows a few of the successful soldiers when they are posted to Afghanistan for a tour of duty, as well as a new officer who takes up his post in Afghanistan for his first tour with a mainly rookie company of men. I managed ...

Eye level is buy level!!
Advantages: Cheap prices Disadvantages: Cheap labour
With the slave trade debate raging last year during the 200 commerations its always important to note that not only is that particular trade is still alive and well in the third world but its as good as here in its modern form in companies like Wal-Mart. Well meaning and angry people may well protest alongside some vegetarians banging a drum in London about what happened 200 years ago but most of the labeled clothing we are wearing will have been ... ...the products piled high in the huge shopping arenas of Wal-Mart and the like are the products of cheap and exploited labor somewhere around the world and when the documentary explores those sweat shops in South East Asia our arguments of reparation begin to fragment. In one segment you see young Chinese girls living in cramped dorms in a grubby factory, the gates locked at night, weekly rent and utilities deducted from their meager pay packets, whether ...
