DVD Description
David Lean's DOCTOR ZHIVAGO is an exploration of the Russian Revolution as seen from the point of view of the intellectual, introspective title character (Omar Sharif). As the political landscape changes, and the Czarist regime comes to an end, Dr. Zhivago's relationships reflect the political turmoil raging about him. Though he is married, the vagaries of war lead him to begin a love affair with the beautiful Lara (Julie Christie). But he cannot escape the machinations of a band of selfish and cruel characters: Strelnikov (Tom Courtenay), a Bolshevik General; Komarovsky (Rod Steiger), Lara's former lover; and Yevgraf (Alec Guinness), Zhivago's sinister half-brother. This epic, sweeping romance--told in flashback--captures the lushness of Moscow before the war and the violent social upheaval that followed. The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Boris Pasternak.

Advantages: A nice easy on the mind, film to watch. Disadvantages: None, unless you really hate sci-fi.
...).
THE MUSIC.
Another huge personality in the form of Maurice Jarre was responsible for the music, past scores have included, (Ryan’s daughter), (DoctorZhivago), (Dead poets society), and the all time favourite, (Lawrence of Arabia).
So you can see, quite a formidable team came together to make this quite unusual but I believe very good film.
THE STORY.
It is always a problem for me to explain a story or plot without giving too much away, but I will endeavour to interest you in the film without going into to much detail.
The film begins some time in the future with a space station from earth, coming under attack from the Dracs. These are reptilian in appearance, although they are bipeds, and Earths deadliest enemies. The space station releases some fighter ships to intercept and destroy the attackers. A bit like the dogfights from the battle...

...The Shawshank Redemption started life as 'Rita Hayworth and Shawkshank Redemption,' a short story from the extremely talented pen of one Stephen King. Any of you who have read some of my other ops will know how much of a god I think this guy is! But the problem with superb books is that they often make the transition into cinema as a very average film. Well The Shawshank Redemption was an above average short story that has become a wonderful, emotional and highly entertaining film. In my eyes, it's simply the best film I've ever seen. And yes, I HAVE seen the classics. Casablanca, Gone With The Wind, DoctorZhivago... but The Shawshank Redemption beats them all hands down.
I first saw this film when it had it's first showing on BBC. I didn't know what it was (which is the reason it didn't do particularly well in the box office...
