The Three Doctors was a story the BBC made to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the show in 1973. Jon Pertwee was Doctor at the time and this reunited the show with its original Doctor (Hartnell) and second Doctor (Patrick Troughton).
William Hartnell was ill at the time of filming with arteriosclerosis, and that is the reason you do not see much of him in the story. But do not let that put you off. This is still a very entertaining story with 3 loveable performances from the Doctors - especially scenes which sees Troughton and Pertwee's Doctors arguing .
The story itself sees Omega, the Timelord who gave his people time travel technology, return after being long presumed dead. Problem is, he's pretty angry and plotting revenge from an anti-matter universe in which he has been trapped. His plans are too devious for one Doctor alone to fight, and that's where the others come in. In its day this was one extremely ambitious story as it required far too many special effects. But somehow they pulled it off! And the restoration team have ensured it stands up on DVD today.
The extras will appeal to anyone. And even if you already own the story on video and aren't convinced about upgrading to DVD, the extras really do make it worth your while. They aren't just there for the sake of it and its obvious the Beeb have actually invested money in this one. There's the restoration of original footage not to mention an insightful audio commentary from Barry Letts, Katy Manning and Nicholas Courtney. There are many extras and a list of them can be found on any website selling the DVD but one of my favourites was 30 minutes of the 1993 Panopticon SF convention caught on camera. Pertwee, Manning and Courtney are all at the convention and it will have you laughing out loud.
Manning and Courtney also star as Jo Grant and the Brigadier, adding wonderful support to what is a great and ambitious story for its day.
Advantages: Troughton and Hartnell in COLOUR! The 3 Doctor's interaction with each other. Disadvantages: The Gel Guards are pretty abysmal. Ah well, you can't have everything...
DOCTORWHO embraces its past fully for the first time, with mixed results. Were it not for the presence of the ThreeDoctors maybe it wouldn?t be that interesting.
THE STORY
An event of such cataclysmic proportions threatens all life in the universe when a Black Hole opens a rift between the worlds of matter and anti-matter. The Time Lords, overseers of all time and space, are left helpless after a massive power drain. Energy transmissions from the Black Hole seem to be directed toward the Doctor (Jon Pertwee), a renegade Time Lord who has been exiled to Earth in the mid 20th century.
Unable to avert imminent disaster, the Time Lords are forced to break the laws of time, and manage to find enough energy reserves to call the second incarnation of the Doctor (Patrick Troughton), to assist himself. When it becomes evident that ...
Advantages: Great acting Disadvantages: Some weak episodes
From the very first episode back in 1963, DoctorWho has wowed audiences with its capacity to create something new with extreme imagination. The rebirth of DoctorWho in 2005 with Chrostopher Eccleston as the title role paved the way for a regeneration in the form of David Tennant. Billie Piper played Rose, the Doctor's travelling companion through the first and second series, but at the end of the second, she and the Doctor were separated permanently when she was forced to remain in a parallel universe. This paves the way for the start of the third series, with Frrema Agyeman as Martha, who takes on the mantle as the Doctor's companion, and David Tennant returning as the Doctor. This DVD is the first in the series and contains the first three episodes.

Advantages: Colin Baker at his best Disadvantages: the special features disk
What I am reviewing is the two disk DVDDoctorWho story "The Two Doctors"
As the series had success with The ThreeDoctors in 1972/3 and The Five Doctors in 1983 for special anniversary editions they decided these were very good storylines but due to the actors not all of them could appear all the time.
The show decided to do another story of the Doctor meeting his former self and this was possible due to the enthusiasm of Patrick Troughton. Patrick was always up for apperaring in these stories and loved the show.
With the current cast of Colin Baker as the Doctor and Nicola Bryant as Peri they were joined by Patrick and Frazer Hines who played Jamie from Patricks time as the doctor 1966-69.
Also apperaring in the cast was Jacqueline Pearce who you may remember as "Servalan" in Blakes 7
This was not an anniversary show but ...
