Hailing from Tom Baker's first years as the Doctor, The Sontaran Experiment sees the Doctor, Harry and Sarah Jane land on a far-future and supposedly unpopulated Earth. Being the sort of nice people that they are, they're there to help out a bunch of colonists by repairing a transmat beam so the colonists can all beam down à la Star Trek and repopulate the Earth.
Of course, it's not that simple. Survivors from another crashed spaceship are already on Earth, and they're not happy to hear about the colonists, but since they're being picked off one by one by an alien determined to discover the limits of human strength and endurance before his lot invade the planet themselves, they've got bigger problems to worry about.
The Sontaran Experiment is a simple little tale, only two episodes long and, being the only Doctor Who story to be filmed entirely on location, looks rather gorgeous. Still there's a tendency to spend the first fifteen minutes thinking how gosh darned lucky it is that, out of the whole planet, the transmat beacon the Doctor's been asked to repair and the survivors from the crash end up within a good few hundred yards of each other.
Leaving aside mad coincidences, there's also the bizarre fact that, given almost all Doctor Who stories set on Earth involve the invasion of the home counties, you might imagine that, given that this is an Earth that has been hit by a fireball and is now just recovering, they'd pretend it was a different bit of the planet. You might think that, but you'd be wrong. It's still London. Somewhere near Trafalgar Square, to be precise.
So what we have here is a jolly adventure with a TARDIS crew that's got a fantastic sense of fun and some marvellous chemistry. Harry and Sarah are beautifully snarky at each other, whilst the Doctor gets to be terribly clever and then gets Harry (for a lovely change) to save the day. Highlights include the utterly unconvincing robot hunting the settlers on the moors, Harry falling down a whacking great hole and the Doctor delivering a rather smashing line about clocks.
There's just about enough story to cover the very limited screen time, but more than enough scenery to distract from the shortcomings there. Really, the only major disappointment is Terry Walsh, Doctor Who's most used stuntman, being patently unconvincing as the Doctor in the Big Fight Scene at the end. The problem here was that good old Tom Baker managed to break his collarbone during shooting, and could do very little for great swathes of the filming other than stand very still, deliver his lines, and be thankful his character has that whacking great scarf to cover up his neck brace.
Naturally, this being a BBC Doctor Who release, the thing has some decent extras, though not as many as most releases (seems the cut price tag on this release isn't just cause it's only two parts long.) There's the standard commentary with Lis Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith), Philip Hinchcliffe (producer) and Bob Baker (writer) with plenty to say and a nice combo of in front of and behind the camera personnel, a decent documentary on the Sontaran, stars of four Doctor Who serials across the years , the good old photo gallery and a nicely cleaned up sound and picture.
While not remarkable, The Sontaran Experiment is a lovely little story, and certainly not one I'd be embarrassed to show any New Who fan. It's small-scale, looks gorgeous, and is a eloquent reminder of why Harry and Sarah were one of the best TARDIS teams the old show ever had.
Advantages: Another good episode Disadvantages: none
Doctor Who the sontarran experiment is a two part adventure which i must admit, a very good two part adventure. Since Doctor Who has never been good at doing 2 part episodes, i thought this would be another bad adventure, boy i was wrong.
The Story
The Doctor and his companions beam down from Space station Nerva to the scarred remains of earth to find it deserted, calm and peaceful, as it should be. But trouble is bound to be around the corner ... ...of a crashed ship. The Doctor discovers that one being is behind all of what had happened, A Sontarran scout who is scouting earth and experimenting on humans to find out whether earth is a likely planet for sontarran invasion. But can the Doctor stop the sontarrans?
Well, to start, the story for this episode is very well done and very original. It really is a good story.
The performance were good all round. Tom Baker kept that humour of the doctor, ...

Advantages: Strong story and excellent pace. Disadvantages: None.
This lovely 2 parter immediately precedes the greatest Dr Who story ever, 'Genesis of The Daleks'. It takes place on an allegedly abandoned earth in the future. But the Dr , Sarah and Harry stumble across some shipwrecked colonists, who one by one are being dispatched in ever more lethal tests, by a lone Sontaran, who are hell bent on taking over this part of the galaxy, as they continue their never ending war against the Rutans. This is a fast paced ... ...is really well acted, particularly by Elizabeth Sladen, as she becomes the victim of the Sontaran experiments. Although there are some obvious scenes where the Dr is played by the stuntman, this can be excused, as Tom Baker suffered a serious shoulder injury during filming. But overall this is a delightful little story.
The extras again are good value. There is the usual cast commentary and interesting facts, plus a lovely photo gallery, which has ...
