The second volume in the first series starring Christopher Eccleston as The Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose…
Writer: Russell T. Davis and Robert Shearman. Director: Keith Boak and Joe Adhearne Producer: Phil Collinson, Russell T. Davis, Julie Gardner and Mal Young.
*Main characters on these episodes…
Christopher Eccleston as The Doctor Billie Piper as Rose… Camille Coduri as Jackie Tyler Noel Clarke as Mickey Smith
EPISODES:
*1 - ALIENS OF LONDON … {1 of 2} --- (16th April 2005)
When the Doctor and Rose return to Earth it is not long before trouble begins, concerning an alleged missing person and what looks like an Alien ship crash landing in the Thames. As London panics the world watches on and the Doctor begins to smell a rat with the whole crash landing bit. As he begins his investigations, being arrested and taken to Downing street, he stumbles upon the truth behind the Alien space ship and the real reason why it crashed into the Thames, bringing some rather strange
monstrous looking beast to London.
*2 - WORLD WAR THREE … {2 of 2} --- 23rd April 2005)
The second part, following on from Aliens of London sees the Doctor in real trouble as he escapes with his life from the mysterious occupants of 10 Downing street… The alleged acting Prime Minister has declared war against an alien invader and is on the verge of an all out Nuclear strike. With Jackie and Mickey's life now in danger it is up to the Doctor and Rose, together with the help of Harriet Jones, (played by Penelope Wilson) to stop the Earth from being destroyed…
*3 - DALEK --- (30th April 2005)
(*This episode reunites the Doctor with his nemesis and introduces Adam Mitchell, (played by Bruno Langley) as another companion for the Time travel Tardis, if only temporarily…)
Somewhere deep underneath the salt plains of Utah in the year 2012, there lives a billionaire named Henry Van Statten who has a fetish for anything Alien, opening a museum with many Alien artefacts, including the arm of a Slitheen and the head of a 'cyber man'… and many more…
When the Tardis lands in the underground bunker it is not long before Statten wishes to add the Doctor to his collection, but reassesses his choice when he realises that the Doctor is the only one who can stop the 'metalton' who has been awoken by the touch of a time traveller and has escaped from it's 'cage' with one order to complete… to exterminate anything and everything in its sights…
**IN CONCLUSION**
Another great 2 hours and 15 minutes of entertainment, (45 minutes per episode) which will thrill every one who watches…
Again, Eccleston and Piper play their roles to perfection, including the right amount of humour to keep the stories alive and worth watching.
The stunts and special effects are just right, not too tacky or over the top, so as not to spoil the enjoyment of the episodes.
With some new characters being temporarily introduced, like Penelope Wilson as the very convincing Harriet Jones--MP for Flydale North..(flashing her ID),-- in 'Aliens of London' and 'World war three' (who makes appearances in future episodes) and the rather sneaky, slimy character Adam Mitchell, (played by Bruno Langley), who becomes a companion for a very brief time…
The 2 part story, (Episodes 1 and 2 on this disc) is outstanding, with just the right amount of humour in this high action thriller. As the Doctor struggles with his conscience whilst the planet stands on the verge of extinction…it is up to Mickey 'the idiot' to become the unsuspecting hero with his finger on the button.
In all, without giving away too much of the story lines for each episode, this second volume is probably better sci-fi action and adventure than the first volume, (and that was great in itself). To introduce one of the Doctors old nemesis so early in a series, (Episode 3) seemed a little silly at first but the way this episode end is a bit of an eye opener and almost gives the impression that even murderous metal monsters have feeling…
Would I recommend this…?
Yes I would. It is full of action, suspense and a great many thrills, putting this together with some fine humour and what can only be seen as a rather special friendship emerging from behind the door of the TARDIS you know you're in for something special, (considering this is only three of the thirteen episodes for this series…)
Again, the kids will love this and there is not too much to be scared of… except maybe the Slitheen,
A copy can be purchased from www.amazon.co.uk for under £11.00
*DVD information…
Again, there are no extras on this DVD, all you get is the choice of 'Playing all', 'Episode selection', 'Scene selection' and 'subtitles on or off', making your choice to the well known theme tune whistling out from the television speakers…
