Ecclestone's Doctor is wise and funny, cheeky and brave. An alien and a loner (it's difficult keeping up with friends when your day job involves flitting through time and space), his detached logic gives him a vital edge when the world's in danger. But when it comes to human relationships, he can be found wanting. That's why he needs new assistant Rose. Rose (Billie Piper) is a shop-girl from the present day. From the moment they meet, the Doctor and Rose are soulmates. They understand and complement each other. As they travel together through time, encountering new adversaries, the Doctor shows her things beyond imagination. She starts out as an innocent, unfettered by worldly concerns. But she ends up an adventurer who, by the end of the series, can never go home again... Episodes:- 'Rose', 'The End Of The World', 'The Unquiet Dead', 'Aliens Of London', 'World War Three', 'Dalek', 'The Long Game', 'Father's Day', 'The Empty Child', 'The Doctor Dances', 'Boom Town', 'The Parting Of The Ways (Part 1)' and 'The Parting Of The Ways (Part 2)'
Production Year: 2007 - Science Fiction - Director: Francis Lawrence - Original Language: English - Classification: 15 years and over - Starring: Alice Braga, Charlie Tahan, Dash Mihok, Will Smith, Salli Richardson, Willow Smith

June 18th saw the last episode of this series and fans now have to wait until Christmas for the next one - and the first full story for new Doctor, David Tennant. So in the meantime, buying the DVDs is a fair substitute. The boxset with extras is released in November, but until then, the vanilla DVDs are out.
I have already reviewed the first DVD - volume one - and here I am concentrating on the next DVD release, entitled (unsurprisingly) volume two!
Volume 2 contains three more 45-minute stories of the new series, this time episodes four to six - Aliens of London, World War Three and Dalek. As has already been mentioned, there are no extras, but in my opinion, it is worth buying for the stories alone and the DVD is well worth the price. (Expect to pay between £10 and £15.)
ALIENS OF LONDON - BROADCAST APRIL 16th
An alien race called the Slitheen infiltrate British government at its very core, as they begin to unravel their devious plan for London - and the Earth. Can even the Prime Minister be trusted now? …
This was the first two-part episode of the new series. This was also the first episode that I found disappointing and almost childish at times, certainly the low point of the whole series for me. It's not all negative though.
I love the 'soap opera' aspects of the story - Rose going home again and the reactions of Jackie (her mum) and Mickey (her boyfriend) - and the monsters aren't too bad - the giant green Slitheen with their big baby eyes. London is shot beautifully and the special effects are often stunning, particularly the alien spaceship crashing into the Thames, after a hit on Big Ben. The episode is worth seeing for this effect alone - especially those critics of the earlier series who believe Doctor Who is all wobbly studio sets and dodgy blue screens.
The guest stars are very good too with both Penelope Wilton and Annette Badland putting in very good performances, although poor Annette must have grimaced at the farting. I know I did! This story just seemed to get the balance wrong, so that it all became a little slapstick and silly. As if the farting aliens weren't awful enough, we then have to contend with a stupid pig costume.
All this rather obstructs the plot - which isn't a bad idea in itself, it's just badly realized.
PLACE - London, Earth TIME - The near future, a year later REGULARS - The Doctor, Rose, Jackie and Mickey GUEST STARS - Matt Baker and Andrew Marr as themselves, Penelope Wilton, Annette Badland MONSTERS - Slitheen STORY - 5 out of 10 SPECIAL EFFECTS - 9 out of 10 SCARINESS - 6 out of 10
WORLD WAR THREE - BROADCAST APRIL 23rd
Our previous episode saw the whole planet in peril after the Slitheen have taken over the British government. Can our hero the Doctor save the day? …
This is the second part of the worst Doctor Who story in the new series. I would love to say this was a huge improvement on the first part - but it isn't really. It is slightly better. For starters, there are no pigs in spacesuits and there is a lot less farting, which is a relief. The tone is slightly less of a comic book romp, but it still could have been so much better. There is a good story in here trying to get out - but it's quite well hidden!
Again, some of the special effects are well done, although for me, the Slitheen do lack something. Even my nine-year-old doesn't think the monsters are scary, whereas in a later story - The Empty Child - my teenagers even found it disturbing. Sometimes less obvious, more subtle tones can make a story much darker and more eerie. In some ways, the fact that World War Three was brightly lit with lots of warm red and orange tones made it more comfortable viewing and less frightening.
PLACE - London, Earth TIME - The near future, a year later REGULARS - The Doctor, Rose, Jackie and Mickey GUEST STARS - Andrew Marr as himself, Penelope Wilton, Annette Badland MONSTERS - Slitheen STORY - 6 out of 10 SPECIAL EFFECTS - 7 out of 10 SCARINESS - 6 out of 10
DALEK - BROADCAST APRIL 30th
The Doctor and Rose arrive in future USA, where they discover that billionaire Henry Van Statten owns a rather bizarre collection. Amongst the umpteen monsters, weapons and alien artifacts, he also owns the last surviving Dalek. But is the creature still a danger - tied up, imprisoned and tortured? Or can it still wreak havoc on a world that believes it has seen the last of the Daleks forever? …
NOTE - This episode has been rated a 12 because of its 'moderate violence' and the torturing of the Dalek. You may want to watch it yourself first, before showing it to younger children.
This is an amazing episode and one I find hard to fault. The setting is claustrophobic and stifling, which displays exactly how the Dalek is being treated. Through Rose, we feel sympathy for the 'enemy' as we finally see an almost human side to it.
The all-new Dalek answers many questions previous series have thrown out. We see it hover up stairs (although Daleks of the late '80s could already do this), we find out its chrome 'bumps' really do have a practical use and we see the pathetic creature inside the terrifying shell. Oh yes, and it flies too!
The scene in the warehouse with the rain falling is beautifully shot and contrasts with the slight glimmer of sun breaking through the roof in the final scenes, as the Dalek poignantly asks Rose about the feel of the sun on skin. I know I wasn't alone in crying during the episode and how many of us ever thought we would share such an emotion over the fate of the much-hated and oft-lamented Dalek?
What more can I say? Great story, amazing special effects, atmospheric setting and lighting and one of the most moving episodes ever. Pretty close to perfection all round.
PLACE - Utah, USA, Earth TIME - Near future REGULARS - The Doctor and Rose GUEST STARS - Bruno Langley as Adam MONSTERS - Dalek STORY - 10 out of 10 SPECIAL EFFECTS - 10 out of 10 SCARINESS - 9 out of 10
CONCLUSION
Although this three-episode disc contains the worst two episodes of the 2005 series, the excellence of Episode Six - Dalek - is well worth spending your money on. One of my all-time favourite episodes (if not my very favourite, I'm yet undecided), I cannot recommend it highly enough - and from someone who has every available Doctor Who story on video or DVD (some 700 plus episodes!), you can tell that's an impressive compliment!

This episode and it's follow-up, WORLD WAR THREE, although not weak, are far from the strongest of stories this season. The Slitheen too are hardly scary and, with their comedic fart noises that they make when disguised as human, seem almost to be played just for laughs. They wouldn't look out of place in a kids show and ...

Doctor Who?
Ok so again for those of you who have been living in the dark, Doctor Who is about a man only known as the Doctor who is a time-lord simply meaning he travels in time. Along the way he picks up an assistant called Rose and away they go facing friends and foes together. This is a science fiction show so expect some good monsters and scary effects at times.

*****
Doctor Who started way back in 1963, with William Hartnell playing the Doctor! And his performance must have been so strong as we as a whole are still obsessed with this gripping programme, 44 years later!
Since then, we have met 10 Doctors, and adored every one of them! This Doctor (9th) is played by the lovely Chris Eccleston, living up-to-date adventures in his big blue box, more commonly known as a TARDIS. But the Doctor ... ...three fantastic adventures with the Doctor and his companion, Rose (Billie Piper).

...from the new series of Doctor Who. ALIENS OF LONDON/WORLD WAR 3
Written by Russell T Davies
Director Keith Boak.
A double part story that introduced the Slitheen, who were supposed to be scary new monsters. This story is basically a great big mess.
The Doctor and Rose return to contemporary London, a great big spaceship plows through Big Ben and lands in the Thames.
I really hated this story, it combined more soap opera with the insipid Tyler's ... ...heard of computer security.
The Doctor can travel throughout the entire universe but he decides to return to London in the 21st century, to that horrible grotty council estate with those horrible boring characters. By this stage in the original viewing the novelty had worn off.
The performers in this story were instructed to play it for laughs by the director, so I can't blame them for chewing the scenery.
There were a few things I liked. The ...

Advantages: Great continuance and action Disadvantages: First story could have been 1 episode, not 2
As I explained in my last review, I only started watching this series, as I was forced to by my wife. However, I was an instant fan, and watched a number of episodes back to back. The first 3 episodes very much set the scene for the introduction of Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor, the last of the Time Lord race from a planet far away, and Rose, the Doctor's latest companion on his travels through time.
There are 3 episodes on this, the second DVD of the 1st new series. The first two episodes are one story, with a first part and a second part. The third episode here, episode 6 of the series, sees the return of one of the Doctor's most famous enemies. The episode is entitled Dalek!

Advantages: Great regeneration Disadvantages: None really
When Christopher Eccleston left the role of DoctorWho, many were disappointed as he had sparked the new age of DoctorWho, and it seemed as if he was the answer to keeping the show going. However, up stepped David Tennant at the end of the final episode of the first series, and it is here that he gets his teeth stuck into the role.
Having watched the first series in a relatively short space of time (1 week!), I found myself very much intuned with Eccleston in the role, but Tennant is admirably capable of filling the shoes, in a completely different way. One of the biggest things about the various actors who have played the Doctor over the years is that they have all been so very different to each other, and this continues here with Tennant, as he embarks on the second of the modern series of DoctorWho.

on the Episodes.
These two episodes are so great because they both are so entertaining and so funny. The Christmas invasion sees David Tennant get stuck in his role and begins to show what a cheeky Doctor he is going to be. It successfully continues from the last series and also manages to have a great festive feel to it which is strange considering the subject matter is aliens. That is the talent of DoctorWho though.
The second episode is one of my favourites from the series because it is so funny and I love the fact that some old characters come back. The script is sharp and at times the episode is very scary but at others it just makes you roll around in laughter.
