I just finished watching BBC new Doctor Who series and it's better than I thought it would be.
I had only seen the first couple episodes of the 1979 Doctor Who series as a kid and loved them. I got up to the episode with the green slime, got to scared to watch any more and stopped. I had also seen a couple of Doctor Who movies with Peter Cushing, but that's about it. I am no Doctor Who expert, but I know what I like. And the 2005 season I liked it a lot.
The new series stars Christopher Eccleston (The Others, 28 Days Later), as the Doctor. He is both funny and serious and has a north accept (well, he is an alien but lot's of planets have a North as he puts it). The Doctor's new companion is Rose, played by Billie Piper. Billie is best known in the UK as a not very successful pop-singer and ex-wife of Chris Evans. Her filmography is almost non-existent, be as Rose Tyler, she handles acting pretty OK. In fact she is better than one would be expecting.
The series has a high production values and the FX are pretty good for a UK series. What I really liked is that although the episodes are stand alone, they are all connected giving the audience a feel of continuity. There are also hidden hints in most episodes of a greater story arc that might be revealed in the next season.
Generally the series is pretty weird, with a lot of plot holes, has its unique style and fast pace and I like it that way. The Doctor and his companion will travel through space and time with the help of the TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space ), team-up with a bisexual time traveller, and encounter a few Daleks, evil mannequins, aliens with bowel problems, Parasites that live in time paradoxes, Ghosts, Zombies and other imaginative enemies.
Eccleston did not renew his contract for a second season and therefore the 2nd season will feature a new Doctor. This is explained by the Doctor's ability to regenerate (he has to die first of course) and I believe this will be the 10th regeneration. In fact that's a pretty smart way to explain how the Doctor changes appearance, what with so many different actors playing the same character over the years.
Unfortunately the DVD has no extras, but a new one (shaped like a TARDIS) will probably make up for that. There are English subtitles, which were very useful for me since English is my second language. The audio is OK too, featuring a Dolby Stereo track (but no 5.1 soundtrack).
I doubt it will be very successful in the US because the whole series looks way too English. It doesn't take itself too seriously and sometimes it becomes camp, but in a good way.

I would have bought this had it been out on video! I'm glad the sound was ok on it. When it was on TV, the music was often louder than the dialogue.

Haha, I was hiding behind the sofa. I remember the episode very vividly. It was during the Tom Baker's run as the Doctor, and a green slime was eating people. Slowly.
