Now well into the second series of the revamped Doctor Who, we see the writers take a bit of a different tack with the plotlines. We have another double episode story with The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit, and then a foray into an episode where the Doctor and Rose are not greatly featured, with a band of other actors taking the top billing for the episode, in Love and Monsters. This is a welcome change from the norm.
The Impossible Planet
The Doctor and Rose are sucked out of the TARDIS and onto a spaceship, which they find out is being held in orbit around a black hole. The ship has a small crew of humans running it, and cannot explain why the black hole has not swallowed them up. The ship also has a horde of a slave race known as the Ood on board, controlled by the crew. They are drilling into the surface of the nearby planet, but what will they find?
The Satan Pit
A demonic beast takes over the minds of the Ood, forcing the Doctor, Rose and the crew to take evasive action. The Doctor must save Rose and the crew before it's too late, but can he do it?
Love and Monsters
This episode features Elton, who as a boy witnessed the Doctor in his house late one night. Elton teams up with a group of Doctor 'fanatics', who have seen glimpses of the Time Lord and his companion Rose and his ship the TARDIS, when they are joined by an obsessive who seems all too eager to find the Doctor........
Cast and Performances
David Tennant is brilliant once more as the Doctor. He takes a backseat role in Love and Monsters but still has such powerful screen presence. Billie Piper is good once more as Rose, and the writers are now using her character to promote the Doctor's cause and to provide more depth to the plots.
There are very good cameo performances from Peter Kay, Marc Warren and Shirley Henderson in Love and Monsters, and the remainder of the cast of all episodes do very well.
My Opinion
I enjoyed these episodes. The previous contained a few tired moments almost as if the writers were running out of ideas, but this is a welcome change of tack in Love and Monsters with a very clever angle, focusing on Doctor fans as opposed to the Doctor himself. The performances are all very good in all three episodes, and the double episode with the beast is very well done, and shows the true mind power of the Doctor, but also shows how limited even he can be.
Overall, this is a very well and maturely presented selection of epiodes, which sets up the final few episodes very well. The series is getting stronger now, and high expectations for an end of series finale are on the cards. The DVD contains no extras, as is norm, with these being left until the end of season complete boxset.
