With David Tennant having shown what he is capable of as the Doctor in his first two episodes, he jumps straight in as if it had been him all along in the following episodes. In fact, this is technically true of the character, as the Doctor is the same person with regeneration giving him a different outlook.
The three episodes in this DVD have many 'in' jokes and moments that many might not get. I watched them with my wife, who has seen them all before and has just recently finished watching the end of the fourth series, and she mentioned a number of things that made later episodes make sense, so the whole series and the following ones all link to each other in subtle ways as well as story folloiwing story.
The Episodes
Tooth and Claw
The Doctor and his companion Rose find themselves emerging on the remote hills of Scotland during the reign of Queen Victoria. They travel with the Queen to the Torchwood Estate, where they take refuge with the owner from a supposed wolfman. There, they uncover deadly secrets and a plot involving the Queen herself and some mysterious religious extremists. The Doctor and Rose find themselves protecting the Queen of England!
School Reunion
Rose's boyfriend Mickey suspects that things are not quite as they seem at a local school. Further investigation reveals an old companion of the Doctor's and an old friend as well, while at the school, the discovery of a carnivorous alien race plotting to take over is the latest challenge for the Doctor.
The Girl in the Fireplace
Aboard a mysterious spaceship in the 51st Century, the Doctor finds a time vortex hidden on the ship linking it to medieval France and the fireplace of King Louis' lover, Madame de Pompidour. The time vortex means that time is going much quicker in medieval France, and a couple of minutes on the ship can be a couple of years the other side. In coping with this time difference, the Doctor finds out the reason there is such a link, as an alien species reveals its cruel intentions.
Cast and Performances
David Tennant is brilliant again, and really seems to be relaxing into the role of the Doctor. He combines his comedic nature with the very fearsome and ingenious side of the Doctor's character to provide good entertainment. Billie Piper's role as Rose seems to be volving as she understands more of the universe, but the character seems to be at a standstill at points and needs a bit of development, I feel. It is nice to see Mickey back into the storylines as it does provide a different line of storytelling to be examined.
There is a good performance from Sophia Myles as Madame de Pompidour, and an equally good turn from Pauline Collins as Queen Victoria. In School Reunion, Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Anthony Head gives an eerie performance as the headmaster, while Elisabeth Sladen returns after many years as a previous Doctor's companion, with another friend.
My Opinion
Doctor Who keeps going from strength to strength in my view. The first series very much needed to cement itself and give the public a new idea of what Doctor Who was going to be about. Here, David Tennant as the Doctor Who almost seems as if he has free reign to examine the role and expand it. The series is ever popular, and the second series is showing signs of being better than the first. Certain nuances are entering into the episodes, with the Bad Wolf clues present in every episode. It is not completely explained what Bad Wolf is, but it is prevalent in many episodes, so we shall see, I guess. I eagerly await the third and fourth series as I have now finished the second series.
This DVD is as the others are - without extras. The extras are held back for the release of the whole series once it has finished, as a marketing tool for true fans. I probably won't buy the complete series, the episodes are enough for me. This DVD can be bought for £6.49 from amazon.co.uk. This is a bargain.
