When Christopher Eccleston left the role of Doctor Who, many were disappointed as he had sparked the new age of Doctor Who, and it seemed as if he was the answer to keeping the show going. However, up stepped David Tennant at the end of the final episode of the first series, and it is here that he gets his teeth stuck into the role.
Having watched the first series in a relatively short space of time (1 week!), I found myself very much intuned with Eccleston in the role, but Tennant is admirably capable of filling the shoes, in a completely different way. One of the biggest things about the various actors who have played the Doctor over the years is that they have all been so very different to each other, and this continues here with Tennant, as he embarks on the second of the modern series of Doctor Who.
The Episodes
The Christmas Invasion
This feature length episode is designed to introduce Tennant as the new face of the Doctor. As a strange race called the Sycorax surrounds the Earth, threatening to take over, the Doctor'd companion Rose and her boyfriend Mickey and mum Jackie realise the Doctor is the only one who can save the planet. However, he is lying in a semi-comatose state on Jackie's couch following his latest regeneration, and waking him up too early would be disastrous!
New Earth
The Doctor and Rose are transported into the future to a hospital run by feline nurses. However, they are harbouring a dangerous secret involving evolution, and the Doctor and Rose must find out what is going on as they encounter a couple of old 'friends' along the way.
Cast and Performances
David Tennant cements himself as the Doctor almost immediately. He doesn't actually do much in The Christmas Invasion as he is in a coma, but when he does come into it, oh boy! Thoughts of Chrisopher Eccleston and worries that it wouldn't be as good are thrown out of the window. The two actors are very different, but Tennant is excellent.
Billie Piper is solid as Rose. The character seems to almost mature overnight following the regeneration of the Doctor, and takes the bull by the horns a bit more. The actress does very well, and is well supported by Noel Clarke as Mickey and Camille Coduri as Jackie. Supporting guest stars include Zoe Wanamaker as Cassandra (the last human) and Penelope Wilton as Harriet Jones.
Opinion
I was tentative at first with this second series, but my fears were all allayed by these first couple of episodes. The first serves well to introduce us to David Tennant as the Doctor while not asking too much of the actor, as the character spends a lot of time unconscious in bed for the first episode. In the second, the relationship between the Doctor and Rose is reestablished, and it is business as usual as if Tennant had been in the role for ever.
I was impressed with the special effects. Doctor Who is well known for 'tacky' effects, but this is part of the furniture with the show, and it does not disappoint with the second series. Everything is very 'Doctor Who-ish' and I was relieved. On with the next DVD! This DVD doesn't have any extras - they keep those for the complete boxset released at the end of each season.
