I found the second series a little disappointing as the director seemed more interested in the special effect than the story lines. The first series, with Christopher Eccleston was by far a much better series regarding the story lines as the special effects were kept to a minimum and the story line seemed more convincing. The second series was good but the acting from David Tennent was, to me, slightly worrying from the very beginning, his facial expressions only knowing one emotion with the gritting of his pearly white teeth for every other scene. The essence of the series really concentrating on the special effect, hoping to take the heat from the near terrible acting. Billie Piper really made the show, acting solo in the Christmas special making her the centre of the entire series. Then the final program, with Billie (Rose Tyler) 'dying, really showed why Doctor Who should never have disposed of the only two stars it really had. Don't get me wrong, David Tennent IS a great actor but I never thought he was right for the role of 'the Doctor', to me he is much to 'dramatically' for the role. The first series made people interested again about watching what was already a classic sci-fi series for decades. The show gaining a new, younger audience as well as keeping the die-hard fans, but then the second series for me was a slight let down. I am not saying that the second series is not worth watching, it is. The story lines are good, but without the special effects the show would fail. Without telling you what happens in the episodes and spoiling it for people who haven't seen series 2 yet here are the basics…. In the second series we went forward in time to see cats running a hospital, this episode was probably the slowest and should not have opened the series. Then we saw a werewolf try to devour the queen, a great idea and well worked effects as the werewolf formed, a good story with a reasonable, if not risky ending. Then there was a French girl in a fireplace which was a complicated story trying to explain why robotic aliens were stalking a girl entire life. Then the old enemy of the Doctor reappeared in a 2 part series, the cyber men return as a new army to try and take over the world,(again). Then the 'idiots lantern' take you back to see the coronation of Queen Elizabeth the second, the men in black taking people away for 'questioning'. Then the next two parted introduces the devil onto your screen, battling wits against a small band of people stranded on a planet hovering above a black hole. Love and monsters comes next, the Doctor and Rose hardly in this one at all, in fact this one simply told the story of how a group of 'Doctor who hunters' are fooled by a very fat Peter Kay into tracking down the Doctor. Then episode 11 shows how one lonely girl with a urge for drawing can totally destroy the world with the stroke of a pencil. The final 2 episodes were simply the best of the series, a ghostly experience where the two enemies of the doctor meet and try to destroy each other. A great story line with some good effects but have some tissues at hand for the final episode when Rose and the Doctor say their final goodbyes, this acting should have earned Billie Piper an award of some kind. As I said earlier, the second series was good and well worth adding to your collection, but I personally preferred Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor as I found him to be a more convincing 'Time Lord'. I have wondered if the second series would have been better if Eccleston had remained as the doctor.
