For all those who are intent fans of the new series of Doctor Who, and possibly even David Tennant (which I know from experience is one reason many people watch Doctor Who!) then this complete season two box set is a must for you.
This six DVD package comes in a lovely protected box set with an above average episode guide which covers all of the episodes and brief outlines, as well as images to set your juices flowing, yet the on-dvd navigation facility is a wonder and really stands out. It is also perfect for the visually impared!
Onto the actual episodes...
David Tennant has certainly made the second series of the revived Doctor Who more interesting and real, and his relationship, both on and off screen with Billie Piper, really shows perfectly in the acting, something in which I can bring no flaws. The emotion is full-blooded, as the humour and wit will have you laughing for hours. It is full of adventure, fantasy, scary moments and so much more - an all rounded series!
The Christmas Invasion Although David Tennant made his first appearence as the tenth doctor in the children in need
episode, this first one of the second set brings a whole new outlook to Doctor Who, and we really get a feel of who the Doctor is.
New Earth Set in the future, the special effects are simply perfect. Already, a bond grows between the Doctor and Rose and a scene begins to set for the future episodes
Tooth and Claw A perfect and humour-filled episode with werewolves and Queen Victoria, which brings together a scene of excitement and love as parts of the bigger puzzle begin to take place
School Reunion For viewers of the old series, this episode will bring back memories as the original actress comes back in as Sarah Jane Smith and teams up with the Doctor, Rose and Mickey against a school headmaster, played brilliantly by Anthony Stewart Head. Possibly one of the best episodes of season two.
The Girl in the Fireplace We see more depth and understanding towards the Doctor as emotions, love and grief run high in this challenging, exciting and well written episode
Rise of the Cybermen If you thought the original cybermen were scary, then this episode will have you hiding behind the sofa with great effects and perfect 'monster' attributes.
The Age of Steel Continuation of the last episode which deals with many different emotions in an all-rounded, action packed episode
The Idiots Lantern Who knew a television set could be so terrifying! A simple, non-special effect, episode which flows perfectly and draws to a frightening conclusion
The Impossible Planet This episode brings a whole host of amazing characters and actors in a whole new situation, with great special effects and brilliant relationships
The Satan Pit Brings about questions in the audience minds of what they really believe about evil.
Love and Monsters Not one of my favourite episodes at all. Poorly written and hardly contains anything which has pulled the series along. Could be seen as a seperate episode altogether.
Fear Her Again, perhaps not the best episode, and not many special effects, yet we see more of the relationship between the Doctor and Rose and see a glimpse of what the future holds for them
Army of Ghosts Everything the whole series has lead up to finally come to a heightened close in the penultimate episode which is full of action, adventure, emotion and so much more
Doomsday The saddest episode of all the second series. It will leave you crying your heart out, but it is certainly not one to miss!
The Extra's
Not only has this DVD boxset got perfect episodes, it is also full to the brim with extras for all ages.
Children in need special - A short episode which really does not do Doctor Who justice
Billies Video Diaries - Approximatly 5 minutes of rough filming but worth watching as it is filled with numerous funny moments.
David's Video Diaries - Approximatly 85 minutes of humerous and insightive footage (yet poorly recorded) with audio navigation
Audio Commentary - Numerous people including directors and actors providing great commentary on each of the episodes
Deleted Scenes - Certainly worth watching, though not as many as I would have hoped
Out-takes - Some funny and perfect out-takes which really give you a glimpse of the brilliant off-screen realationships of the cast
Doctor Who Confidential - Brilliant behind the scenes captures which delve deeply into the Doctors history, follow the production team as they strive to bring us this amazing series, gives us a taste of the excitement it has to offer and the energy which surrounds the series, and so much more. The only thing which is a slight let down, is that some confidential bits from the television has been missed out.
Others extra's include; Meeting the new Doctor, looking at the fear factor, reuniting Sarah Jane Smith with the cast, from script to screen, making of the cybermen, the Doctor and Rose' journey, A look at the writer, Scene making and creating, A look at myths and legends which run in the background of the series, Behind the scenes of Torchwood. - All perfectly presented extras which round off the DVD perfectly!
Overall, this is a box set which is well worth the money, whether you are a long term fan of the series, or a newbie to the world of Doctor Who. There are no regrets on my part with this set and I would reccomend it to everyone!
