The final volume containing the last episodes of season 0ne of the new, re-imagined DOCTOR WHO (and what a money-spinning idea that was- releasing the first season over seperate discs) comes to the dedicated fan not with a whimper but a big, explosive bang!! Finally the BAD WOLF storyline draws to a close (for now...) with the return of an old foe, one of the first mentions of something called TORCHWOOD (hmm....) and what some have come to regard as the worst episode of season one as an opener.....
BOOM TOWN sees the not-quite-so-welcome return of the Slitheen when the Tardis travels to the Rift in present-day Cardiff (opened earlier in the season) for a top-up of energy. Sitting in a cafe making small talk, Captain Jack, The Doctor and Rose are taking some all-too needed time-out when The Doctor sees a familiar face in the local paper; that of a member of the Slitheen family who managed to teleport herself away just before Downing Street was destroyed. Magaret Blaine, as she calls herself, has become mayoress of Cardiff and intends to use a nucleur meltdown at local power station, Blaidd Drwg (Bad Wolf in welsh), to escape the planet following it's destruction. Of course the arrival of The Doctor scuppers her plans and the remainder
of the episode is a kind of last supper as the Timelord takes her out for a final meal before intending to return her to her homeworld where she is a wanted criminal. Unfortuately this also means taking her to her death which leads to another lengthy conversation about how The Doctor is actually a harbringer of doom and how everywhere he goes he leaves a trail of death and destruction; however unwittingly he does so. This is a common theme first raised in the opening ever episode of this new season by that guy from the Nationwide ads who starred as a Doctor obsessive who had followed the Timelord's exploits through the ages. It is a recurring message that carries all the way through to the latest season, season 4- that the last Timelord actually leaves something of a negative trail behind him- and actually, for me, redeems what could have been otherwise a terrible episode. Fans who think this the worst in the series are, I think, a little too judgemental- nothing much happens, but new fans get one more glimpse at the REAL Doctor older fans have been following for decades.
BAD WOLF follows on shortly afterwards but this time around, no TARDIS is in sight. Instead Captain Jack, Rose and The Doctor find themselves back on Sattelite 5 competing seperately on different gameshows literally for their life. Continuing the very clever cultural references that have littered the show, (one example is Brittany Spears' song "TOXIC" getting an air-play in a previous episode) we see futuristic versions of BIG BROTHER, THE WEAKEST LINK and TRINNY AND SUSANNAH where the ultimate prize is walking away with your life. It soon becomes apparent that things went downhill for the human race shortly after The Doctor left the sattelite last time around and that his adventures then might just have been part of a much bigger picture. In fact, the human race is being just as manipulated now as it was then and it's all down to a certain old enemy we saw return briefly not so long ago.....
Yes, it's The Daleks back for THE PARTING OF THE WAYS, the final episode- apparently the Dalek we saw earlier on wasn't the last one in existance after all and now they're back doing what they do best- trying to destroy Earth with their army of ruthless, metal killing machines. When it looks like it's all going to end in tears, The Doctor finds a way to save Rose but when it comes to the crunch who is going to save The Doctor? And how is The Bad Wolf Corporation involved in what is going on? Finally we get some answers as to why those words have been literally dogging (excuse the pun) the last Timelord's footprints through time and, in an exciting climax, we also get to see a brand new Doctor!! Yes, it will come as no surprise to learn that this is the episode where we finally got to say an emotional goodbye to Eccleston's short but successful stint as Timelord and a welcome hello to the actor David Tennant who has carried us through the role right up toand past the current season just finished. This final disc is the ewnd of an era, albeit a short one, and the promise of something new when season two comes around....
As seasons go, this has been a relatively strong one with some weak elements (the Autons from the first show had their moments and I still don't have much time for The Slitheen) but more good than bad though there has been a lot of bad (wolf)!! Eccleston really managed to pull off a Doctor for a new generation and if there are any regrets, it is just that he wasn't around longer. Still like they say- always leave them wanting more and, with this explosive climax to a brilliant re-imagining, executive producer, Russell.T.Davies has certainly succeeded in everything he set out to achieve in putting a long-missed show back in its rightful place; on top at the BBC!!
Roll on season 2.......... also on doyoo
