Well, it had been a long break since the last Doctor Who and bringing it back in the 21st century would always be a risk, but with all the modern special effects tricks available the new series should make interesting viewing.
*The first episode, Rose, sees the doctor (Christopher Eccleston) rescuing Rose (Billie Piper) from the dreaded shop dummies in a department store on their very first meeting. The Doctor is on Earth hunting down an Alien creature, 'the Nestene', who is in control of all the plastic on earth. then when the shop dummies come alive and begin to attack people in London the Doctor and Rose have to stop the earth being taken over by this thing. As an opening episode it was well written with an easy to follow story line for the return of the Doctor. The minimal use of special effects making the episode more believable, the opening explosion very dramatic indeed. The opening episode gently introduces the main characters, briefly explaining who and what each persons involvement in the show is.
*Episode 2, The end of the world, is a futuristic episode set on a spaceship, platform one, as the Doctor and Rose are their to witness the termination of the planet earth. Platform one is a floating spaceship which travel space so VIPs can watch the unfolding events around the Galaxy. The characters in this episode are both humorous to look at and quiet serious in their duties, The forest of Cheem and Jabe are what can only be described as 'trees', then the face of Boe is a giant head simmering in a giant fish bowl. Cassandra was the star of the show, she being a piece of skin stretched across a metal frame being sprayed with moisturiser to stop her from shrinking. She became the evil show person who was keen for the rest of platform one to burn as they watched planet earth heat up and end. A great episode and the view of the Earth as she burned was quite dramatic. The selection of Aliens, from Blue stewards to talking trees were well thought out and used perfectly.
*Episode 3, The Unquiet dead, takes the Doctor and Rose into the world of Charles Dickens and forces them to face gas
creatures, Gelfs, and stop them from taking over Earth as they need dead bodies to survive. A good episode with some fun historical facts and the humour from both Dickens and The Doctor are worth a giggle. As the Doctor and Rose are on the verge of being killed by these unquiet dead creatures the unlikely heroes are Dickens and a quiet girl called Gwyneth, who then gives her own life to save the planet from these gas creatures. This episode is yet again well written and acting was perfect in every way, the historical nature maybe teaching younger fans a little about Charles Dickens.
*Episode 4, Aliens of London, and *episode 5, World war 3, are the first two part, Starting when a spaceship, piloted by a pig, crashes into Big Ben tower. As the story unfolds it soon becomes clear that there are ulterior motives for the pig crashing, this was just a distraction for the real enemy of Earth. The 'Slitheens' were behind the spaceship crashing and they soon come to the surface, killing anyone who stand in their way. The huge creatures using the skins of 'large' humans to overthrow the British government for the task of starting a nuclear strike, their reason is for the money they will make from selling the obliterated Earth as raw fuel for other spaceships. This episode introduces Harriot Jones,(Penelope Wilton, who's part was specially written for her by writer/producer Russel T Davies), MP for Flydale North, to the show, as she is in future episodes. The story line is again well written and uses Downing street as the main stage, the news reporting could almost have been real enough to believe if one had tuned in at a certain time.
*Episode 6, Daleks, brings the Doctors greatest nemesis back into the series. In an underground hide a collector of space artefacts has managed to capture a Dalek and is holding it as a prisoner. The dalek is damaged and weak, only managing to scream as it is tortured. When the doctor arrives the dalek is unwittingly rescued by Rose and then begins to escape the prison, 'exterminating' everything in its path. The ending has a slight twist as the Doctor and the Dalek communicate rather than obliterate. This episode again was well written and could easily be believed, even when the Daleks finally show how they have evolved and managed to master the humble staircase.
*Episode 7, The Long Game, sees the doctor and Rose, with a new companion, Adam who they picked up from episode 6, land on 'Satellite 5, a television broadcasting station which supplies Earth with all it's news and viewing. There is more to this space craft than meets the eye as the Doctor and Rose become suspicious with the goings on on 'Floor 500'. On investigation they find who really is controlling Satellite 5 and therefore planet Earth, The Jagrefess is a huge blob attached to the roof of floor 500. Again, another good episode, slightly slower than the others but the writers gave this a twist at the end when The Doctor and Rose dropped Adam back at his mums house with a little surprise on his head.
*Episode 8, Fathers day, was one of the best written episodes as we see The Doctor and Rose travel back to 1987 to see when Roses father was killed by a hit and run driver. Rose suddenly decides to save her father and in doing so she damages the fabric of time, allowing flying creatures called the 'reapers' in through the rip to devour the entire human race. As the doctor takes refuge in a church with a wedding party the 'reapers' begin destroying the earth. In this episode you are made to feel that this could be the end of the Doctor as we see him lose against one of the 'reapers' This episode is fantastic and the way the special effects are used to show the 'reapers' flying around and attacking people and the church is brilliant, making the smallest of details work well as the fragments of the church walls fall as the 'reapers' attack.
*Episode 9, The Empty Child, and *Episode 10, The Doctor Dances, transports Rose and the Doctor back to London in 1941, during world war 2, searching for a spaceship that crashed. This episode is where we meet Captain Jack, (John Barrowman???), who deliberately crashed the spaceship thinking he could make money from it, only to realise that the spaceship contains more than he thought as he watches the human race being turned into monsters. The crashed ship is a tular ambulance carrying something nasty in its cargo. The Doctor meets Nancy, a young girl who help feed the homeless children of the area to eat, finding food in houses during air raids whilst the owners are safely hidden in their shelters. Nancy's little brother, Jamie is the main reason for this story, he was killed by a bomb the same time that Captain Jacks spaceship crashed, Jamie being the first body that the contents of the spaceship find. This episode is well written and well acted by all involved, especially Nancy and Jamie. The idea behind this was well thought out and used some good special effect to tell the story.
*Episode 11, Boomtown, Reintroduces an old enemy from episodes 4 & 5. One of the Slitheen family members escaped the destruction of downing street and has made it to Mayor of Cardiff. Her plan is to open a nuclear power station in Cardiff as a cheap alternative fuel source. Her ulterior motive being somewhat sinister. The Doctor, Rose and Captain Jack confront the Slitheen and are duped by her. This is another good episode and the writers still have some good ideas to put forward.
*Episode 12, Bad Wolf and *Episode 13 Parting of the ways, The trio are beamed onto a game station and are forced to participate in deadly games, unbeknown to them who their host really are. They manage to escape the clutches of one horror only to realise that their real enemy was watching from high above. An old enemy of the doctor reappears and brings many others, including the emperor, and the Doctor looks like he may have met his match. The twist to the final episode is when Rose, on being sent home by the Doctor, returns to the game station with the power of the TARDIS, this being no match for the Daleks. Showing how much power the TARDIS really has. Captain Jack is given a new role, ready for future episode, as Rose brings him back to life. The regeneration process by the Doctor was well acted and showed how the Doctor has managed to survive for over 900 years. This was another great episode showing how the writers still have many more stories to tell as they entwined possible ideas into the ending.
The entire series is well written giving gripping story lines and brings back some of the doctors old enemies. The writers have made the long awaited comeback well worth watching and hopefully the following series will be as good. The acting was fantastic, from the children sat around the dining table in episode 9 to Billie Piper and Christopher Eccleston.
