If you plan on collecting the new series of the latest installment of the Doctor Who franchise, I'd say you would really have to start with this one. Russell T. Davies has re-envisioned the series for a new century and it shows. Mostly gone are the episodic cliff-hanger endings (save a few two-parters), but in their place are self-contained stories that aim to dazzle adults as well as children. Christopher Eccleston is excellent as the new Doctor. He is charming, funny and above all, mysterious in the role. And just as you get used to him, the dramatic stakes are raised even higher with every episode.
While the first episode "Rose" tries to re-introduce the world to the phenomenon of Doctor Who, it does feel a bit of a let down in the story department. However, as soon as Rose steps into the TARDIS she's whisked off to bigger and better (and scarier) stories to come!
Children will love this approach to science fiction as it is not at all like Star Trek or anything else on television. Adults appreciate the subtle humour and Russell T. Davies offers an ongoing mystery throughout the series that will boggle your mind to try and figure it out. This becomes of course his trademark through so far all three seasons.
Definitely worth the price, this re-released set is much slimmer than the original release and therefore saves on shelf space.

I see you've posted this as a DVD review, but you've not mentioned the DVD. Are there any extras? If so, what are they and are they any good? If you add to this, or if you change it to be posted as a "Film Only" review, which can be done by accessing "edit review" above the review and changing the drop down menu under the "Which format are you reviewing?" question at the bottom, please let me know and I'll re-rate.
