Lets face it, it had to happen didn't it. A show that had gathered 20 years mileage at that time played by different actors and now sporting its fifth incarnation it would be a crime not to gather together what I would say was the cream of the crop at that point in the shows history.

DOCTOR WHO:
For anyone new to Doctor Who the Doctor is an alien from the planet Gallifrey whos people mastered the art of time and space travel. He travels in a police box known as a TARDIS however his ship is supposed to alter its camouflage every time it lands but the cloaking device stuck when the Doctor landed in London, 1963. The benefits of the TARDIS is that although appearing to have the dimensions of a London Police box, inside its dimensions are much bigger.
His body when mortally wounded can change completely into a new one with a different persona but still keeping the memories of the previous one. Throughout his travels he is joined by many different companions, many human but some alien and even robot.

THE STORY:
All 5 of the Doctors very contrasting personas are taken out of their time streams and set down on their home planet of Gallifrey. All but one Doctor is successfully taken out of time, the Fourth Doctor having been trapped in the time vortex. While once homely to the Doctor it is far from welcoming this time. Trapped in what is known to all Timelords as the 'Death Zone' the remaining 4 incarnations must endeavour to reach the Dark Tower or what is commonly known as the Tomb of Rassilon, instinctively to find out why they have been brought there and by whom. But reaching the tower proves no easy task, many past foes and enemies stand in the Doctors' way.

THE DOCTORS:
One of the great things about the Doctors different personas is that they all contrast each other and its great to see them disagreeing and even arguing with each other at times. The irony is is that really he is arguing with himself but at a different point in his history.
Each Doctor does justice to their character, Richard Hurndall although not the real first Doctor plays the first Doctor beautifully and you really believe he is the first Doctor. He absorbs William Hartnell's manerisms to perfection being the prim and proper gentleman that the first Doctor is so fondly remembered for.

Patrick Troughton is true to form as the second Doctor, what I like about his character is that he appears to not know what is going on and appears intimidated at times but really it is a fasard hiding his true power, he reminds me a little of Collumbo.
Jon Pertwee drives, climbs and flies his way to the dark tower and who could expect anything less from this persona. What I love about this incarnation is Pertwee appears in complete control of what is going on but still finds the time to be sympathetic and caring especially near the tomb when his companion is overcome by emotion.
Unfortunately Baker wasn't able to take part in this story but I often wonder what he would have been like if he had. Whilst I think the other Doctors would try to solve their plight logically I believe this persona would be completely unauthodox and very humurous to watch but still have the same degree of control as the others.
Peter Davison young in his physical appearance, I feel in comparison to the other Doctors really still has a lot to learn. His naivity is central to this character and is by no means negative if anything it is endearing to watch. We watch as the Fifth Doctor solves the puzzle internally from the heart of Gallifrey.

THE COMPANIONS:
Its brilliant to see the many different companions reprising their roles again to the same degree of success as the Doctors. The grandfather relationship between the first Doctor and Susan is in evidence, there is a great sequence involving a Dalek, the sets look just like the 60s style but it works to great effect. The Brigadier is back without his UNIT backup, its interesting to see how he copes without it, while Sarah-Jane Smith is paired with Pertwee's Doctor and is as headstrong as ever! Tegan and Turlough are part of the ongoing cast at that point being used to a very vulnerable but quietly strong Doctor. What is great to see is Tegan accompanying the crotchity first Doctor to the Dark Tower, the interaction between the two really does work. Tegan is not somebody to be pushed around and the first Doctor is not someone to be told what to do either, there is a great deal of friction along the way.

CONCLUSION:
The real fun starts when all 4 Doctors meet in the tomb, the first and third Doctors appearing to belittle the second Doctor which proves humourous in this story. In a previous story to celebrate the 10th Anniversary Pertwee, Troughton and Hartnell came together in 'The Three Doctors' however we only saw the interaction with Pertwee and Troughton, Hartnell confined to appear through the TARDIS scanner as he was too ill to make a full appearance. With Hurndall's great acting combined with Pertwee and Troughton's true to form Doctors we properly experience the interaction between the three. The fifth Doctor's young persona is really played up against the seemingly older Doctor's- this works brilliantly. This story originally broadcast in 1983 as part of Children in Need will always stand up as a brilliant homage to the character of the Doctor.
