In one of his earliest adventures, Jon Pertwee's Doctor faces off against the Axons, a single entity that has the ability to divide into the standard Who monster and a leotard, gold faced humanoid.
I wanted this DVD, as the paperback was the first Doctor Who I collected, almost 30 years ago from my primary school fete for 10p. I loved the book, and this story is quite good. Not up there with classic Pertwee's such as Green Death, or The Daemons, but still holds its own.
Jon Pertwee's Doctor is upstaged totally by Roger Delgado's Master. He always portrayed the Master with a sinister, yet immensely humorous style. His delivery of the line "overweight, underpowered, museum piece... might as well try to fly a second hand gas stove," is delivered so sarcastically, you almost forget he is the 'most evil person' ever.
The Axons themselves are a typical early 70's Doctor Who enemy. At first they appear benevolent and generous to the humans. The incompetent MOD official Chinn, is the only one convinced that the gift of Axonite is genuine, but the Doctor and The Brigadier are not fooled. But what are the Axons real intentions?
Highlights of this story, are the Master's performance, the apparent betrayal by the Doctor of all human kind. Jo Grant's knickers. The inside of the Axon ship has been well constructed.
Iffy bits. One of the Axons, appears to be nothing more than someone wrapped up in a sleeping bag. Oh it is.
But that is about it. Not a bad story, not one of the best ones, but the Master's performance makes this DVD worth getting.
Extras. As usual a good selection of special features. The usual cast commentary and photos, but the highlight is the rare studio material from the making of the story, including reputedly the only piece of film showing Roger Delgado, (The Master), out of character.
This DVD is value for money, as if you shop around, you can get it for about £5-£6.
