Doctor Who The Claws Of Axos is one of Jon Pertwees best episodes. It has a great story, a great monster and good special effects.
On Earth, the Doctor is being investigated by a representative of the Ministry of Defense called Chinn. But the investigation is cut short when space radar picks up an unidentified object heading towards Earth. As it enters Earths atmosphere, Chinn orders its destruction. Missiles are launched but the object disappears and the missiles are self destructed. But the Doctor does not think the object was destroyed, but has landed. Upon the discovery of where the object landed, the Doctor, Chinn and UNIT surround the area. Then, they receive a message of invitation into the ship. So 3 scientists, Chinn, The Doctor and the Brigadier enter to discover the axons. They claim there planet was destroyed by solar radiation and their ship damaged by them. In return for time to repair their ship, they offer a gift, axonite, a powerful substance that could revolutionize the world. But the Doctor suspects another motive. But unaware to him, his old foe, the master has been captured by the axons and is planning escape with his new allies. But can the Doctor stop the master and find out what the axons are up to?
The story for The Claws of Axos is a well thought out story with plenty of surprises and action. It has a stunning monster and also brings back the master. UNIT also get another chance to shine and shows it allows the doctor to show another side of himself.
The music suits the episode well giving the each episode the right music for the right moment.
The acting was superbly done for this episode. Jon Pertwee delivers an excellent serious performance, Nicholas Courtney continues to delight the audience with all his military talk and thinking, Roger Delgardo continues his stunning performance as the master while Peter Bathurst provides an excellent performance for his character, the demanding Chinn.
The special effects are dated by today's standards but they still provide the proper effect. The axon ship is beautifully done. The axon costumes are also well done and provide a chilling effect. The sets are also well done making full use of the space provided while location shooing also proved its worth in this episode. Especially the sequence when one of the axons is walking about the nuclear power plant.
Overall, Doctor Who The Claws of Axos is a stunning episode with the best of everything. I certainly recommend this episode and say that it is definitely worth every penny.
