Despite its reputation of wobbly sets, not terribly good effects and such, there are many Doctor Who stories that are simply outstanding and The Caves Of Androzani is one of them, its got lots going for it, there’s the fact that the Doctor and Peri are dying throughout (after having come into contract with a deadly poison), there’s plenty of action, gun running, double crossing and such, a really good script and some great location settings, and much more.
Doctor Who Made by the BBC from 1963 to 1989, its the worlds longest running science fiction programme, it has the distinction of having the most spin off books, there were two films made in the sixties based on it, a made for TV movie in 1996 and lots, lots more. Its also just as popular now as ever.
The Doctor is a renegade, he left his home planet of Gallifrey in a stolen space/time ship (called the TARDIS), and travels through
space and time having many adventures, he has the ability to regenerate, thus giving him a change of appearance and a new lease of life, the Doctor always fights for good and is the all round hero.
Many episodes of Doctor Who were destroyed in the seventies, and the BBC and all the fans would dearly love to have them back, see restoration-team.co.uk for details.
The Caves Of Androzani
Plot The Doctor and Peri land on a planet, Androzani Minor, and are looking around when they stumble across a spectrox nest, getting mixed up in a local war between Sharaz Jek, and the government on Androzani Major, they find out that they have contracted spetrox toxaemia which will ultimately kill them. Sharaz Jek and his androids are withholding the supply of spectrox, the most wanted substance in the universe (due to fact that taking it extends life), and the government isn’t happy, the Doctor and Peri need the milk from a queen bat to cure them, but with being held prisoner, an attempt to execute them and volcanic eruptions of mud with they make it?.
Details The Doctor is played by Peter Davison and Peri by Nicola Bryant, its directed by Graeme Harper, and Produced by John Nathan-Turner. Made in 1984, as four episodes and is approximately 99 minutes long, its Peter Davisons last story as the Doctor, and the DVD is priced at around £16.99, and has a PG rating.
Extra’s on the Region 2 DVD include, Commentary by Peter Davison, Nicola Byrant and the Director Graeme Harper A Feature on Creating Sharaz Jek A Feature on the Regeneration News Reports on Peter Davison Announcing he was Leaving Doctor Who The Trailer On Screen Production Notes Photo Gallery
Also part of the opening scene has been reworked making a cleaner look and there is an option to watch the original version.
My Opinion As Peter Davisons last story as the Doctor, it makes a fantastic fair well story for his Doctor, the story is well acted and the script is superb. Its very realistic, there is only two parts that aren’t so great, when the Doctor gets the milk, and the part featuring the not so great monster, otherwise it really is great, very tense, believable, what can I say, the feel of the story is good, with the Doctor and Peri slowly dying, you can see that they are getting weaker, there are some really great scenes all through the story, to be honest every part of this story is exceptionally well done, convinced yet?.
I had already got this story on video (at about £11.99 at the time), and wouldn’t have gotten the DVD if it wasn’t for the great extra’s, because the extra’s make the DVD worth buying alone, I haven’t listened to the commentary ( I never do, if I had the time.......), but would advise doing so with the on screen production notes as well (I’ve had a quick look at these and their quite interesting), the photo gallery and trailer are so so, there is an extended scene, very good, the news footage is great as is the features on the regeneration and creating Sharaz Jek, seeing this stuff after all these years is fantastic. All in all exceptional extra’s.
So if you want to watch a good Doctor who story watch this, you won’t be disappointed.

I remember this mostly from the book of the story - it was absolutely superb, and was one of my favourites while I was at school. Oh yeah - And peter Davison was definitely the best ever Doctor. Great stuff. Cheers - Ricky

Watched this on video not too long ago, it is a good story, one of Peter Davison's best. The regeneration scene's cool too. Might consider buying if I had a DVD, but I don't....Great review though, ta, Clanger

Advantages: Davison, Jek, the regeneration, the extras, the cliffhangers (1 & 3) Disadvantages: The monster (appearances kept to a minimum, thankfully)
Advantages: Excellent televison adventure. Good range of Special features. Peter Davison's finest moment! Disadvantages: Peter Davison's last TV Doctor Who adventure...boo hoo!
