This third volume of the fourth series shows another two parter, followed by a rather complex and slow episode…involving just one member of the TARDIS duo..
** BRIEF PLOTS **
* SILENCE IN THE LIBRARY ( 31st May 2008 ) ( part 1 of 2 )
This fantastic first episode is the start to what turns out to be the most frightening episodes from the recent Doctor Who saga… revealing the dark secrets of a futuristic Library which holds every book ever penned from the beginning of time…
The TARDIS lands in the year 51st century on a planet named the Library, (which speaks for itself…), a call for help coming through via the Doctors Psychic paper.
Before too long the Doctor and Donna realise that the seemingly empty library in fact holds thousands of lives, although the scanners reveal over a million-million life forms…only there doesn't seem to anybody on the planet at all…???
After being warned to 'count the shadows' by a human faced Node the pair are on the verge of leaving when lights go out and the shadows close in….
When a team of space suited people, led by Professor River Song, (played by Alex Kingston), suddenly blast their way into the 'library' the Doctor is puzzled as to how one of them seems to know him very well, knowing more about him than even he knows…
With the now expanded team in danger from the shadows it is up to the Doctor to figure out what is hiding in the shadows and why there is no one left inside the huge Library…
With the strange sudden death of Miss Evangelista,
(played by Talulah Riley), one of the space suited team, the Doctor suddenly realises what the cause is… uncovering the frightening truth about their possible fate…
As the story becomes more complicated… involving a young child, (played by Eve Newton), who suddenly appears on a monitor, a space suited killing monster and the horrors which happen to Donna during a failed escape plan… the Doctor and the surviving members of the team await their fate trapped in the horrors of the Library…..
** to be continued….

Steve Pemberton as Strackman Lux Jessika Williams as Anita O-T Fagbenle as Other Dave Harry Peacock as Proper Dave Colin Salmon as Dr Moon Mark Dexter as Dad * FOREST OF THE DEAD ( 7th June 2008 ) (part 2 of 2 )
This second part to silence in the Library sees the Doctor and the surviving members of Professor River Songs team running for their lives from the horrors which hide in the shadows…
With Donna seemingly whisked into a perfect world, under the guidance of Dr Moon, (played by Colin Salmon), her life seems to be ideal, finding the man of her dreams, marriage and then children… only one thing niggles in the back of her mind… dreams of a man in a suit and trainers…??? Her perfect life becoming more complicated when a mysterious stranger reveals the truth about her entire existence…
Meanwhile, as the Doctor and River Song battle against the monsters in the shadows, the truth about the entire existence of the Library is revealed, helping the Doctor to understand the complications of what happened on the vast planet called a Library… giving him hope to save the many lives that are being hidden from the shadows…
But will he be in time to stop the planet from destruction and can he save the lives of those closest to him?

The Doctor and Donna decide to take a rest, relaxing on a planet named Midnight … its surface being so hot no creature can survive outside the holiday complex…
With Donna taking in the relaxing atmosphere of the planet the Doctor takes a shuttle trip to see the Sapphire Waterfalls …only this four hour trip will not be as relaxing as he hoped…
With all passengers on board …including a professor Hobbes, (played by David Troughton), his assistant Dee Dee Blasco, (played by Ayesha Antoine), Val and Biff Cane with their mouthy son Jethro and a quiet business type woman named Sky Silvestry, (played by Lesley Sharp)… the shuttle heads for its destination.
Unfortunately, the trip takes on a more horrific side when the shuttle breaks down, the crew having no explanation… leaving the hostess (played by Rakie Ayola) to keep the passengers calm until the rescue shuttle arrives…
But when a knocking sound is heard on the outside of the craft the passenger panic, especially as nothing can survive in the heat outside the shuttle… with the knocking sound continuing until suddenly the shuttle becomes infiltrated by what lies outside… seeming to attach itself to the most petrified passenger …

** IN CONCLUSION **
Brilliant once more… ( and I don't mean this review)
The first two episodes on this disc really are the scariest in the entire series, especially the perfectly portrayed special effects regarding the horrors in the space suit and the not so pretty know Miss Evangelista The two part story really dos give meaning as to why some people are scared of the dark, (and if this episode is anything to go by there will be many more people even more scared of the dark than ever).. The idea of creature hiding in the dark is nothing new but these creature are not like any other, these are something that you can not fight against, if you meet these in the dark then your numbers up… The story is well written with lots of twists and turns, keeping the audience guessing as to what is going to happen next in this slightly confusing episode… mixing futuristic events with what seems like a present existence really does make this one flow, ( the plot could easily be confused with a Hollywood blockbuster it is so rive tingly brilliant)… with the climax of the show really opening your eyes to the weird, but very imaginative minds of the Doctor Who crew…( and as the very imaginative Steven Moffatt was involved, remembering him from the brilliant 2005 two parter 'The Empty child and The Doctor Dances', you'd expect nothing less)
Sadly, I do feel that the episode Midnight did let this volume down slightly, being a little slow and lacking real action and thrills… it maybe should have been a little more frightening and action packed to stay on par with the other episodes on this disc… Don't get me wrong, it is still worth watching but is more a laid back plot than the usual fast paced dramas involving the crew of the Blue Box… There isn't much to frighten the viewer and there is no noticeable alien… unless you count someone repeating your every word as being alien, (more irritating then alien I suppose), even when they begin to speak your words quicker than yourself… but the storyline does entertain in some ways and the visual effects are eye catching, portraying a beautifully scenic world which no man can damage…
In all a good volume with three worth while episodes which will please the viewer immensely…
Would I recommend this…
Yes I certainly would. It is a very good 2 hours and 15 minutes of entertainment… with probably the best two parter ever written (maybe) it is well worth the £11.98 you pay for it at www.amazon.co.uk …
