As much as I enjoyed vol 2 of the fourth series of Doctor Who, it is this DVD that will be the one that I will watch and enjoy the most out of this series. I was excited about all three of these episodes as I heard Alex Kingston (Moll Flanders) was going to be in the two part Steven Moffat story (He wrote the amazing episode Blink in series 3) and also starring would be Steve Pemberton from The League of Gentlemen.
The Doctor gets summoned yet again in this series for help and finds himself on a planet called The Library. The planet seems deserted yet when he checks the computers for life it states that there is a million million life forms. Cue the arrival of an expedition team that wants to explore the planet, which is nothing unusual as the planet hasn't been visited for hundreds of years. What makes this episode curious is Professor River Song, who has obviously met the Doctor before. Possibly as an assistant, possibly as a lover, we do not know, however the Doctor has yet to meet her, which makes for a Moffat-equse creepy twist and turn story that he is so brilliant at writing. To make sure she's not just another villain in disguise, she even has a sonic screwdriver which the Doctor gave her. What I love about the Moffat episodes are, you can almost ignore the main story and enjoyed the quirkiness of his genius.
Also on this disc is Lesley Sharp in the fantastic claustrophobic single episode Midnight. Another well written and creepy story as it barely has Donna Noble in it, which makes the episode a little bit scarier because the Doctor seems much more vulnerable without his assistant.
The Doctor and Donna decide to take a holiday on the planet Midnight. Donna stays on the planet to pamper herself and the Doctor takes a shuttle to the Sapphire Waterfall, where halfway through the journey the shuttle has a malfunction and then they hear a knocking from outside, which is supposed to be impossible as the outside atmosphere is lethal. Cue claustaphobia, paranoia and creepyness as one of the passengers gets possesed by an unknown being. Great fun and mostly filmed in the shuttle craft.
Steven Moffat will be taking over from Russell T. Davis in the 5th series of Doctor Who in 2010, so expect a darker fell to the series.
No extras on the DVD.
