It all begins again.

Advantages: First Tom Baker story.
Disadvantages: Robot a bit dodgy, but it was 1974.

...2nd most important date in Doctor Who history. It was the televised debut of THE Doctor, played by Tom Baker.

Following his regeneration, the Doctor has to assist UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce), and their enigmatic and old friend, Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge Stewart in helping to solve some mysterious robberies. All these robberies involve the theft of parts to build the ultimate weapon, a disintegrator gun. The robberies ...
...that the crimes are perpertrated by a Giant Robot. The Robot was built as a peaceful machine and as it wages a campaign of theft and also murder, it begins to go mad, as the Robot was built with a Prime Directive, not to hurt anyone. Its creator Professor Kettlewell appears to be an innocent victim of the Scientific Reform Society, who are using the Robot to acheve their aims. The destruction of the World and the creation of a 'newer, better World'. ... more

...was the military group The Doctor worked with during the period of the show's production). The plot has The Doctor, who has just regenerated, aid UNIT in investigating the theft of top secret plans and equipment from premises which had been believed to be impenetrable. It transpires that the culprit was a robot created by Professor Kettlewell (played by Edward Burnham) and it is up to The Doctor and his companions to stop it. This is a fun story ...
...Doctor Who stories from the time, are somewhat creaky in comparison to those in the modern series. The DVD features a commentary by Baker, Sladen and the writer of the story, Terrance Dicks. This is an informative and entertaining commentary, and is to be treasured as Tom Baker rarely provides them. There are a number of other special features too, including documentaries and even the opening of a BLUE PETER episode about the 'Robot' story. I highly ...

...of solid entertainment for any Doctor Who fan! This DVD is packed with fun and excitement with the Doc being lethally weakened by the Spider Queen Metebelis 3 and forced to regenerate; as well as UNIT investigating a spate of robberies involving a top-secret disintegrator gun. Anticipation builds as a robot is used to carry out a menacing agenda of the Scientific Reform Society. And Doctor Who wouldn’t be the same with a courageous rescue... this ...

THOU SHALT NOT KILL

Advantages: Good Story
Disadvantages: Poor extras on DVD

One of the more pleasing consequences of the recent success of the new Doctor Who series is an awakened interest in the older episodes. For some time now the BBC have been producing some great DVD collections of the original series featuring episodes from previous doctor's incarnations. Although for me the doctor is always going to be Jon Pertwee (down to may age I'm afraid) Tom Baker is a close second and he certainly had the benefit of some great stories in his tenure. One of these classic stories is certainly on this DVD, 'Doctor Who and The Robots Of Death'. STORY AND BACKGROUND The episodes were first broadcast in 1977 as a four part story, it features Tom Baker as the eccentric timelord with a liking for long scarves and Jelly babies and Leela the Amazonian savage from a primitive planet who made a habit of flashing her ...

an interesting companion, with her savage tendencies being unlike those of many other companions. It is also worth noting that the wooden control room in the TARDIS, which I mentioned in a previous review I really liked, makes its final appearance in this story, which is a shame. The DVD features a commentary by Chris Boucher (the writer of this story), and Philip Hinchcliffe (the producer). Although it is a shame that none of the cast appear on this commentary, these 2 do make interesting aural companions when watching the episodes. Unlike a great many of the other Doctor Who DVDs the other extras are not very interesting and can easily be avoided. I highly recommend this DVD to fans of the 'Doctor Who' series. It is available from Amazon UK for less than £9. --------------------------------------------- --- DOCTOR WHO - THE ROBOTS OF DEATH ...

. Fascinating stuff. Boucher is also pleased with the final product based on his script, as he reveals where his ideas came from and what he was trying to put across. This was the first commentary recorded for a Doctor Who DVD and it is a measure of its success that this is now an expected feature on all subsequent releases. Well, I hope that’s enough to give you a flavour of the disc. I bought it from play247.com for £14.99 and it is well worth purchasing, both for the committed fan and the curious newcomer. ...
