Doctor Who And The Silurians: Summoned by the Brigadier to an underground research centre ... more
at Wenley Moor the Doctor and Liz Shaw learn from its director Dr Lawrence that work on a new type of nuclear reactor is being hampered by inexplicable power losses and by an unusually high incidence of stress-related illness amongst staff. Investigating a nearby cave system the Doctor discovers it is the base of a group of intelligent reptiles termed Silurians who went into hibernation millions of years ago but have now been revived by power from the research centre. The Doctor strives for peace between reptiles and humans and manages to gain the trust of the old Silurian leader but then a rebellious young Silurian seizes power and releases a deadly virus that threatens to wipe out humanity. The Doctor finds an antidote but the Silurians retaliate by taking over the research centre and preparing to destroy the Van Allen Belt a natural barrier shielding the Earth from solar radiation harmful to humans but beneficial to reptiles... The Sea Devils: The Doctor and Jo visit the Master in his high-security prison on an island off the south coast of England and hear from the governor Colonel Trenchard that ships have been mysteriously disappearing at sea. Investigating the Doctor learns from Captain Hart commander of a nearby Naval base that the sinkings have centred around an abandoned sea fort. He and Jo then visit the fort and are attacked by what one of the men there terms a Sea Devil - an amphibious breed of the prehistoric creatures encountered by the Doctor shortly after his exile to Earth. The Master aided by a misguided Trenchard is stealing equipment from the Naval base in order to build a machine to revive the Sea Devils from hibernation. The Doctor takes a diving bell down to the Sea Devils' underwater base to try to encourage peace... Warriors Of The Deep: The Doctor Tegan and Turlough arrive at an underwater Sea Base on Earth where a scientific and military team led by Commander Vorshak are monitoring a rival power bloc. The team undergo regular missile launch test sequences to ensure that they are ready at all times to combat an attack. Three Silurians led by Icthar - the surviving member of a Silurian triad - revive a colony of Sea Devil Warriors in order to invade the base and use its weapons to attack the opposing power bloc thus provoking a global war that will allow the reptiles to conquer the Earth...

Bringing together the trio of adventures featuringDoctor Whos most famous underwater foes, ... more
theBeneath The Surfaceboxset has Sea Devils, Silurians, and adventures from both the Jon Pertwee and Peter Davison eras. Its perhaps logical to get past the weakest of the three adventures in this set first, and that honour falls to the Peter Davison story,Warriors of the Deep. Its not too bad though, even if it does display some of the silliness and budget constraints that helped define 1980sDoctor Who. Its still fun, however, and worth a spin. The two Pertwee adventures are terrific, though, and the real highlights of the set.The Siluriansfinds Jon Pertwee relatively new to the role, and blessed with an adventure that boasts excitement, adventure and a very good script. But our favourite is nonetheless the second story,The Sea Devils, which also brings Roger Delgados take on The Master into the mix. Its a tense, involving adventure, and one of the finest of the Jon Pertwee area. Thats not something to be said lightly, either. As is the norm withDoctor Whospecial edition DVDs, the set is then backed up with some terrific archive extras, along with commentary tracks and documentaries that all but justify the asking price alone. That you get two strong adventures and one reasonable one into the mix as well makes this one of the best classicDoctor Whoboxsets released to date. Highly recommended. --Simon Brew

Advantages: Fantastic acting Disadvantages: to many fart gags
In the new series of DoctorWho, Russell T Davies pulled off the near impossible, and made a series the BBC had thrown on the scrap heap since 1989 into must-see Saturday evening TV. No longer the preserve of geeks and fanboys, it became primetime family entertainment in ways it hadn't been since the 1970s, and Christopher Eccleston was an impressive, if sadly short-lived, Doctor. Chris gives The Doctor funnyer side with his sarcastic coments. Billie piper (An embarrasment to pop music who sang the hidious "because we want to") is impressive in these few episodes putting her dramatic acting skills to use. The prosthetics in the entertaining two parter is the only fault i can find. The slitheen look like there from the 60's Doctorwho! Apart from that its a brilliant buy. ...
Advantages: Great stuff Disadvantages: None really
Now well into the second series of the revamped DoctorWho, we see the writers take a bit of a different tack with the plotlines. We have another double episode story with The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit, and then a foray into an episode where the Doctor and Rose are not greatly featured, with a band of other actors taking the top billing for the episode, in Love and Monsters. This is a welcome change from the norm.
The Impossible Planet
The Doctor and Rose are sucked out of the TARDIS and onto a spaceship, which they find out is being held in orbit around a black hole. The ship has a small crew of humans running it, and cannot explain why the black hole has not swallowed them up. The ship also has a horde of a slave race known as the Ood on board, controlled by the crew. They are drilling into the surface of the nearby ...
Advantages: Great rebirth of the doctor Disadvantages: None really
plummeted. There was a TV movie starring Paul McGann in 1996, which I vaguely remember, and then a 9 year gap before Russell T Davies revamped the doctor as Christopher Eccleston. The show has been immensely popular and is still going strong, with David Tennant now playing the Time Lord and soon to be replaced with Mat Smith.
The DVD series
The first DVD features the first 3 episodes of what is called Series 1. Although it's not the first series ever, it is the first of the more modern series, and so it is thus called.
Episode 1 - Rose
The first episode of the new series naturally has a bit of explaining to do after such a long time away from the screen. Although there was a film in 1996, no episodes had been made since 1989, meaning a 16 year gap and a whole new generation of DoctorWho fans to impress. We are introduced in this ...
