Production Year: 1967 - Comedy - Director: Val Guest, John Huston, Ken Hughes, Robert Parrish, Richard Talmadge, Joseph McGrath - Original Language: English - Classification: Parental Guidance
Advantages: Sellers and Scott directed by Kubrick, that enough? Disadvantages: Its only 90 minutes long
“Gentlemen you can’t fight in here, this is a war room!”, as brilliant and relevant today as it was in 1963, Dr Strangelove is the seminal satire which rocked the Hollywood boat and has had waves lasting right through to the modern day. If it were to be some kind of cake it would be near perfect, something like a baked Alaska possibly, it has all the right ingredients, one of the greatest directors (and one of the most politically and technically ... ...time and one of the greatest writer. I will start with Terry Southern the writer of this farce, purely because he is possibly the least recognisable of the three. Southern was an immensely popular writer during the 1960’s, but despite his talent he rarely got credited for his work, he wrote other films like Steve McQueen’s Cincinnati Kid and of course Easy Rider. Not really a conventional writer he would often work on bizarre projects like Barbarella ...

Advantages: Kubrick directed it, funny, interesting, good acting Disadvantages: none
I came across this film when looking at various 'Top 100 Film' guides, most notably one on the website of Time (an American publication).
I had not previously heard of it and knew nothing about it until I sat down to watch it, whereupon I saw Stanley Kubrick's name in the opening titles and thought "this is going to be good".
"Dr. Strangelove: or How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love The Bomb" is another Kubrick masterpiece, a war film (like ... ...set in the time of the cold war. It is a satirical dark comedy, based upon the thriller book Red Alert by Peter George.
It starts with a US Airforce General Jack Ripper ordering, with no provocation or higher orders, his wing of B-52s to attack their targets in Russia.
The rest of the film follows the President and his chiefs of staff as they try to recall the bombers, which for various security reasons are almost uncontactable. The problem is ...

Advantages: George C. Scott, Peter Sellars, Brilliant script, Kubrick Disadvantages: Dated special effects. Those not familiar with Cold War details will find less to admire.
Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove is regarded as a black comedy classic and was originally scheduled to be released just a few weeks after John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Release was wisely delayed until the following year and because it was released in the beginning of the year, rather than the end of the year it perhaps cost the film an Oscar or two (it was nominated for 4).
The Cuban missile crisis of 1962 and the Cold War was on the minds ... ...Terry Southern took Peter George's serious novel) created one of the finest and most enduring comic satires ever put on celluloid. It's a film that is almost too clever for it's own good. A film that managed to get several details exactly right (almost by accident) and make up other believable details that were utterly fictitious (the War Room). Many viewers might even miss half of the film's humor the first time they watch the film.
The pacing ...

Simply A Hoot Review ofDoctor Strangelove (Wide Screen)by
Kozinski
Advantages: Peter Sellers is fantastic, very funny script Disadvantages: Editing is quite weak.
Stanley Kubrick and comedy. In my mind the two don't seem to join, but in "Dr. Strangelove" the two are marred with hilarious brilliance.
Altenatively titled "How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb", this comic caper teams Kubrick up once again with Lolita actor Peter Sellers who plays several roles in the film (The President, an RAF officer and Dr. Strangelove), George C. Scott and Slim Pickens.
The movie is really split into three senarios ... ...plane carrying a nuclear bomb. The Allies are unsure if the enemy has launched a nuclear attack and send in the nuclear carrying crew of Slim Pickens and others, including a young James Earl Jones.
The film is absolutely hilarious practically due to the magnificent Peter Sellers and his performances: The babbling RAF officer, The calm US President and the simply insane Dr. Strangelove. If you think Inspector Cluseau was funny - wait till you get ...

Advantages: great film, good transfer Disadvantages: not many extras
What better way to sample the works of Stanley Kubrick than to treat you and your dvd player to the newly released box set of the majority of his films. Included in this set as a bonus is Dr Strangelove, a bizarre and dark comedy that features a multi character performance from Peter Sellers.
America's paranoia of the cold war is at its peak. Convinced that the Commies are polluting America’s "precious bodily fluids", a general orders a surprise ... ...military cohorts attempt to stop the bomb by debating in the war room with not much progress. It also doesn't help that the Soviet premier is drunk and the Russian ambassador seems to be a spy.
This is one of those films that remind you that not all comedy has to involve bodily fluids or functions. This is a smart film with some amusing characters and just highlights the notion that Americans are quite trigger happy at the slightest threat. Peter ...

DR. STRANGELOVE OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB is the cold war masterpiece by Stanley Kubrick. Based on the novel RED ALERT by Peter George, the film is set at the height of the tensions between Russia and the United States, when all it would take to destroy the world was one push of a button. And General Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden) is just the man to do it. Convinced that the Russians have infiltrated America's vital essence, the crazed Ripper gives the go code to the 843rd to attack Russia, setting in motion a series of hysterical vignettes involving gung-ho soldiers, wacky generals, spying Russians, drunk premiers, battles with soda machines, fights in the War Room, and the Doomsday Machine. Shot in black and white, the film has three main centers of action--one of the bombers, on which a group of loyal men know they are about to start World War III; Burpelson Air Force Base, where Group Captain Lionel Mandrake (Peter Sellers) is trying to convince everyone that Ripper has gone mad and the bombing must be stopped; and the War Room, where President Merkin Muffley (Sellers again) is trying to make peace with the Russians. The finale, featuring Sellers as Dr. Strangelove, is a comic gem. Hayden, George C. Scott, Slim Pickens, Keenan Wynn, and Sellers (in three roles) are especially terrific in what is the funniest, most poignant black comedy ever made, a vicious satire on the farcical aspects of the military and the cold war.
