hit film which, while ostensibly aimed at children, has a high quotient of hip and even mildly gross humour. Murphy stars as John Dolittle, whom we see as a child talking to a neighbourhood dog who explains that the reason mutts sniff each others' butts is to assess their characters when first meeting them. Little John promptly tries this out on being introduced to his school principal. Warned off such social eccentricity, Dolittle stops talking to animals and as an adult becomes a respectable doctor running his own medical practice--until a bump on the head revives his capacity to understand animals, whereupon mayhem, mortification and a menagerie of needy and freeloading creatures are heaped upon his ordered existence. Murphy plays it relatively straight. It's the animals, some of them vividly enhanced by Jim Henson's animating team, who provide the real laughs here, and a thoroughly worldly, wisecracking bunch of characters they prove to be. There's a couple of hard-boiled, squabbling rats, a pigeon who complains of impotence, Rocky the guinea pig (voiced by Chris Rock) with a neat line in hip backchat, while Albert Brooks voices the gruff, melancholy tiger whose life Dolittle must try to save. A sweet but by no means saccharine comedy. --David Stubbs Dr Dolittle 2It's only a marginal improvement, but Dr Dolittle 2 defies the odds by rising above its popular 1998 predecessor (and once again, let's not confuse these movies with the earlier Rex Harrison musical). Eddie Murphy plays the title role with ease and with the confident professionalism of a comedian who knows when to share the spotlight--especially when he's being upstaged by a bunch of animals who steal all the punch lines. And once again the film is aimed at a pre-teen audience: so many of those punch lines involve flatulence, bodily functions and frequent use of the word "butt". The difference this time is that Dr Dolittle has settled into his talk-to-the-animals routine; his 16-year-old daughter (Raven-Symone) is getting to be a feisty handful (it turns out she's coping with a hereditary gift); and his lawyer wife (Kristen Wilson) is representing him in a trial against corporate villains who want to clear-cut a local forest. Naturally, the local critter mafia (their Don is a beaver... fuggeddaboudit!) want Dolittle to fight for their cause, and this involves the successful mating of an endangered bear and a domesticated circus bear who's forgotten all the bear necessities of life in the wild. The bears are voiced by Lisa Kudrow and Steve Zahn and they almost steal the show, but the whole menagerie (with digitally animated "talking") is equally amusing. Adults might wish that the filmmakers had tried harder to make a truly memorable sequel, but this is a movie for kids, and they're going to love it without quibbling. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

THE MATING GAME Review ofDoctor Dolittle 2 (Wide Screen)by

Advantages: funny film with cute animals Disadvantages: hasnt got Rodney the guinea pig in it
...Dr Doolittle - the doctor who has the magically talent of talking to animals. Everyone talks to their pets, by saying hello etc to them. How many can say, they can hold a two-way conversation with them? He puts this to great use by becoming a vet to help out all the ill animals that come to see him. His passion for helping out so many animals often puts a strain on his marriage and relationship with his children. Having to sacrifice some time with ... ...determination in him makes sure that he does not give up. However hard a case may be.
Lucky – he is the stray dog that became the family pet in the previous film. The only one to survive from there as the guinea pig Rodney does not appear in this film. I found this disappointing, as he was the real star of the show. Lucky still has all the humorous elements that he had in the first. Being the rough put loveable dog he is he now wants a wolf to be ...

Doctor Dolittle 2 is a classic film that for me was even more entertaining than the first one (Doctor Dolittle). Again Eddie Murphy plays the animal orientated doctor, who can hear every bark, me-ow, and other noise that is made by any animal. But when they reach his ears, they magically turn into words for him to understand!
In Doctor Dolittle 2, Murphy is summoned to see a beaver! Trying to tell all of the beavers associate’s that he needs ... ...will he do it? Can Doctor Dolittle save the day, and save the forest?
Dolittle has two daughters in the film; Charisse is the elder of the two and is dating a pizza delivery lad, who the kind doctor is keeping a firm eye when he turns up at the family’s forest retreat! Maya is the younger sister, and she loves animals. Indeed she is given a chameleon, which by the way doesn’t change colour.
The film goes from strength to strength, and ...

Advantages: Good effects, acting and jokes Disadvantages: didn't have Rodney from the first film
...beaver doesn't visit anyone the doctor would have to go to HIM. This beaver turns out to be a sort of mafia-leader of a beaver and tells the doctor that large parts of a forest are being chpped down and all the animals are losing there homes. The only way the doctor can save the forest from being chopped down is to find a bear to mate with the forests endangered species - a happy-go-lucky bear w3hose voice is provided by Lisa kudrow (Phoebe from ... ...him "bigger than poo". The doctor then has a very difficult task of trying to teach Archie to behave like a wild bear in order to get the girl....this is done with hilarious consequences.
Apart from this main storyline there are other plots in the film aswell. DR.Doolittles' daughter is now involved in a relationship and is becoming a little difficult to deal with, however all is explained at the end of the film which is a tad predictable. There ...

Advantages: Eddie Murphy, effects Disadvantages: Lil Zane, R&B soundtrack, weak plot
When the first Dr Dolittle was released I was dragged alone by my younger brother to see it not expecting much. What I got was an entertaining kids film that served a purpose. Now a few years later I find myself once more dragged along to see the sequel. Not much has changed for Dr Dolittle, his popularity with the animals shows no signs of slowing down as he helps them with their problems like only he can. One night he is approached by a member ... ...summons him to a meeting with the boss-a beaver. It turns out that the animals woodland habitat is about to be cut down and Dolittle is the only one who can help. The only way he can stop some ruthless businessmen from getting out the saws is if her can get an endangered species of bear to mate. The female is in the woodland but the male is a performaing bear who knows none of the natural bear instincts. Dolittle has to play mentor and cupid at the ...

Lighthearted Fun Review ofDoctor Dolittle 2 (Wide Screen)by
beck100
Advantages: Funny, Lighthearted Disadvantages: Mainly for Kids, Lots of Toilet Humour
...the lead role. The animal doctor is now famous the world over and is flown all over the world to solve all kinds of animal problems. On the evening of his eldest daughter's 16th birthday, Dr. Dolittle is paid a visit by members of an animal mob whose "territory" is being destroyed by a logging company. The animals figured Dr. Dolittle was their only hope in saving their home. The only way Dr. Dolittle can save the forest, is if he can get a pair ... ...is that the male bear, Archie is a circus performing bear and has no clue as to how to be a bear in order to woo Ava, the female bear. And Dr. Dolittle has just one month to turn this "city" bear into a real bear. Which, after watching the antics he went through, is easier said than done. Overall, Dr Dolittle is great if you want a good laugh and want to get away from the real world. The animals are obviously the stars of the movie and are very funny. ...

DVD Description
The sequel to Eddie Murphy's smash hit family comedy, DR DOLITTLE, will certainly not disappoint fans of the first film. Murphy returns as the doctor, who has now garnered some measure of fame for his communication abilities, at least among the animal kingdom. Dolittle is also dealing with his rebellious teenage daughter (Raven Symone). But he drops everything when he's summoned by "The Beaver," the Godfather figure of the local forest, to help the animals preserve their home by stopping an overly aggressive lumber company. To save the forest, Dolittle has to take a trained performing bear (also an endangered species, who is endearingly voiced by Steve Zahn)--and introduce him to the wild to find a mate. Zahn's bear, who would rather star on Broadway than hibernate in the woods, is the comedic heart of the film, but there's an entertaining array of colorful animal characters, including Lucky the dog (Norm Macdonald reprising his role from the first film) and Pepito (Jacob Vargas), a chameleon who can't quite seem to blend in. Director Steve Carr (NEXT FRIDAY) keeps things light and lively, creating another surefire hit for Murphy and his animal crew.
