She and honorary diva Elton John belt out an energetic version of "The Bitch is Back", but the highlight is when Turner teases the captivated audience during the slow, sultry opening of "Proud Mary". A sexy dervish on stage, Turner easily out-swaggers her younger backup singer-dancers. Cher joins her to wrap up the classic hit, then segues into her own set in which she seems breathless, but you can't help admire her staying power (four decades!) and forgive her. Diva-in-training Leann Rimes performs "How Do I Live" with a sure, powerful voice. Next to her, Brandy is pleasant but unexciting. Her breathy rendition of "Everything I Do I Do for You" is disappointing, but it picks up when Faith Hill enters. Adding a passion and conviction that young Brandy can't yet muster, Hill grounds the song. Über-diva Whitney Houston gives us the drawn-out vocal gymnastics for which she's famous. Self-effacing she's not, but the girl can hold a note like nobody's business. Mary J Blige matches Houston in a charged "Ain't No Way".Divas Live 99is a benefit for Save the Music, VH1's project to stress the importance of music education in American public schools. The VH1Divas is hailed as one of the biggest musical concerts of the year and is advertised on television, radio and the internet for months before its transmission. Broadcast live in America and a few days later on Sky television here in the UK the event raises money for charities across the US, and this year its good cause was to bring music back to schools, a subject close to the heart of many of the performers appearing in the show. We were lucky enough to win tickets for the musical extravaganza this year and were flown over to Vegas by VH1 for five days with the concert being part of our wonderful few days away. Tickets were selling like hotcakes via the net and ranged in price from $75 to $150 so we counted ourselves lucky that we had the top priced ones clutched in our sweaty little hands on the night of the performance ...

I was one of those lucky few who was there on the day. The day that music changed the world something that has continued ever since but has never been achieved up to this standard. I have been to many many live gigs but this one comes right at the top, I can still remember the shivers down my spine as I felt the excitement from crowds and performers alike so, when the concert was released on DVD I decided to purchase it. All proceeds from this dvd goes to the Band Aid trust to continue their help in feeding the world.
The 4 disc DVD is beautifully presented in a fold out cover which slips into a protective box., It contains an informative booklet giving information and glossy colour photographs from that day.. I was also interested to see that it contained some unseen footage and a documentary which was shown on the BBC a year after ...

Well these six pop superstars don't sing opera, but they are certainly equipped with the beautiful, powerful voices of opera singers. In this VH1 special event, Gloria, Celine, Aretha, Shania, and Mariah (all of whom are so famous that last names are rendered obsolete) join together for a spectacular evening of singing.
