The Beginning
**************************************************************** ************
Remarkably brilliant, television director DJ Caruso in 2005 made the decision to transfer his creativity to film, landing Christopher B. Landon's new thought of a narrative named Disturbia. His incredible deliberation is derived from the white picket fence nature of the suburban area of California and the concealed vanity and eccentricity of its population. Although the screenplay by Chris Landon is extremely appealing, the basis of its storyline's origin is drawn from Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 classic Rear Window, a tale of a young photographer being exposed through the vicinity of his glass window and a video camera, to a city full of deception, narcissism and murder. In an interview for 'Canmag.com' Caruso explains that 'were going to take this and were going to pay homage to Hitchcock, sort of update this concept of the boy locked in his house being the voyeur, but beyond that, we tried not to do anything else that would feel too Rear Windowish.' Therefore the journey unfolded to create the new vision of suburbia.

SYNOPSIS
************************************************************************* ***
The film begins depicting a father, son moment between the protagonist and his 'pop,' as they unfold what seems to be a male bonding session that evidently does not happen for these two figures often. The two share quirky yet snappy comments beginning with the father wondering if Kale has anything he wants talk to him about, and answering almost immediately and extremely sarcastically...'Oh is this that moment, that father son moment?' To which he then continues that he had impregnated a girl and is going to have to visit her in Reno and they are going to get a trailer park and live there with their unfortunate 'love child.' Then after hours of futile fishing, the two start out their journey home with a little more acerbic joking and comments. We are then exposed to Kale driving the car, on the phone as the shot changes to a depiction of the location in which the remainder of the film is adorned by. In the new shot we see Kale's seemingly housewife mother cooking dinner in their all American suburban family home. As she talks to Kale she joins in with the joking adding her maternal nature to the comedy in which is made successful by self-named comedian Shia Labeouf. Kale passes the phone to his father as an idiotic driver almost crashes into the car. After shouting 'Jackass' stridently out of the window he sees the car begin to swerve across the narrow road, slowly making its way back in front of Kale. Julie (Carrie Anne Moss, Mom) continues to talk to Daniel (Dad) as they joke about how much fish they caught, as well as a prank they pulled last time, as they bought fish from the store and exposed it to be the result of their own miraculous hunting skills. After debating how long the journey home would be, the black SUV in front makes a vast, senseless turn forcing Kale and his father to hit the back of a parked car, try to keep steady as they slide up the side of it, subsequently turning on its back and losing almost every part of the vehicle itself. As the kale ad Daniel try to minimise their hurt by keeping still and attempting to comfort each other, Kale says quietly yet extremely anxiously 'Dad!' as another car soars down the road and smashes effortlessly into them. As the riot starts to slow Kale carefully climbs out of the car and timidly with a fragile, feeling hops around to his father's side of the car. The scene is climaxed by a saddened, distressed expression upon the face of a young boy witnessing a traumatic experience...the death of his loving, beloved father.

One year later... at school we are exposed to Kale's Spanish class, in which, we witness Ronnie (best friend of Kale) reciting his Spanish homework. Once again, we are shown comedy but this time jokes typical of a teenage boy. As their Spanish teacher tells Ronnie to be seated, he asks Kale to begin his assignment, and after having a book thrown into his lap he awakens and horribly tries to perform his ill-tried work in front of the class. As he fails miserably his thoughtless tutor tries to punish him further than having the embarrassment of the whole class as scrutinisers, by asking 'What would your father think?' consequently Kale throws the weight of his clenched fist right into the unfortunate face of Mr. Gutierrez the Spanish educator. As a consequence the next sequence explains the result of Kale's outburst, in this involves him wearing an ankle bracelet with a tracking device inside it, allowing him no exit from the laborious happenings of the 30 foot radius of his home. Whilst trapped inside, with only enough vicinity to become a hermit on the living room couch. However; with the entrance of the girl next door (literally) Kale begins to watch the happenings of his neighbourhood's populate. Whilst voyeuristically inspecting the community he notices some tricky circumstances and situation that may become of great threat to the village as well suburbia itself...a murderer. He begins to suspect the old, lonely man across the road has some ugly, dangerous, dirty secrets in his closet...and garage...and basement...well just about everywhere really. Kale begins to wonder whether or not he is simply being paranoid or whether there is a killer in the Pleasantville of perfection also known as suburbia.

Shia Labeouf
****************************************************************** **********
One day in sunny California, an intelligent, strong minded, young male named unusually Shia Labeouf, after a stand up comedy act, explained to his mother that he wanted to try a professional career in acting. In agreement his mother replied that in order to achieve he needs an agent. After finding one whom worked for Disney, he was asked to perform his usual stand up act. He was loved by the company who then took him on and found him one of the lead roles in a hit children's television show named The Even Steven's, in which we saw him constantly fighting with his sister Ren, much like you and your brother/ sister. His general idiosyncratic elements brought to the character were a big hit, landing him bigger stories and finally a fantastic offer to be in a new motion picture release, produced by Disney, named Holes. He played the innocent lead character that is thrown in the youth camp for young criminals, only he didn't commit a crime....No the stolen shoes just happened to fall over the boys head. Of course we know that Stanley (Labeouf) is innocent and follow his story closely in order to find his emotions and roll with them. Labeouf is fantastic and famous for bringing this element to his performances. This does not differ in Disturbia as Labeouf shows off his skills and you can 100% feel is horror when his father dies, the terror when he begins his paranoia and his love for the girl next door. His emotions are fantastically with you through the whole film. Performance= *****

Sarah Roemer
******************************************************************* *********
Due to Roemer's performance in 2006's The Grudge as Lacey, she has been thrust into the spotlight as a leggy, blonde girl next door type, in which she plays quite literally in Disturbia, as she moves in nearby Kale's American home. Roemer is extremely natural in this picture, with her realistic looks and common wavy hair she has successfully found the general female teenage feel to character. Her character is focused on a lot as she is the new 'hot' girl around and both Ronnie and Kale find her attractive however, when the drama begins she is kept out for a while, which I believe to be a great play on Caruso's part as any kind of kidnap or hostage in her would have added to the cheese. Performance =***

Carrie Anne Moss
********************************************************************* *******
Moss really needs no introduction. Known more famously for her extremely dominant role in The Matrix as the love interest of Neo, named Trinity. Her usual character generally would consist of skimpy, skin tight outfits, lots of kicking and fighting, and a huge amount of intellect, however her role in this is simply a maternal role in which she fundamentally is a recovering mum. Springing back to reality must have been nice for Moss and her performance in this shows it, as she is completely natural not too dissimilar to Roemer's. Her performance is borderline great as she is 100% conceivable as an everyday mother. Performance= ****

DJ CARUSO
******************************************************************* *********
After being born in Connecticut, Caruso went west to California in pursuit of a dream in tennis. At the same time he began studying television production at Pepperdine University. He then interned at Disney Studios working with product placement and was mentored by john Badham and Rob Cohen into having a first unit director status. He then scored associate producer status for The Hard Way, and continued producing until 2002's Crazy as Hell, by which time he had directed many series' and documentaries for television, including that of Dark Angel, Going to California, Smallville and more recently, The Shield. Diverting his attention to film, and big production studios similar to those he interned in, he began on his new assignment...Disturbia. Whilst being interviewed the cast each expressed that Caruso was a very lenient director, as many of the cast used adlibbing to make their characters more real. His quick paced nature and reputation for amount of intense car crashes in his work does not disappoint in Disturbia and having not been a fan of his recorded work, I think this film made me attached to seeing more and more.

Special and visual effects
****************************************************************** **********
From the beginning of the movie the effects are entirely vast and immense. As the car scene continues we witness a passionately powerful crash which sets the standard for the rest of the events. The sequence contains fantastic collisions between three cars and makes the danger and seriousness of the films voyeuristic narrative more concentrated. To add to the Voyeurism Kale (Labeouf) uses a hand held camera to film the evidence of the suspicious happenings. This gives a Blair Witch feel to the depiction as the screen trembles with the characters making it just that little bit more real. There are quite a few scenes which require this and most characters including best friend Ronnie and mom Julie, get a chance to be the object of horror. These elements just make the movie more and more horrific and keeps you wanting more and more.

Soundtrack
*********************************************************** *****************
The soundtrack in this has many connotations associated with the films narrative.

Tracks like 'Because I Got High' performed by 'Afro man,' and 'Me so Horny' by Countdown are used to add to the comedy by which is generally created by the sharp narrative and young cast.

The other slower tracks are used to add to the drama in situations such as; when Kale is sorting out the house and garden to fit his entrapped needs the song ' Taper Jean Girl' performed by Kings of Leon. The song kind of allows the audience to take a break from the drama of dead fathers and tracking devices. I think this one is the best song. Watch out for it!

Many of the songs in the film are slow more intense songs such as; System of a down's 'Lonely Day,' which plays just after Kale is sentenced to house arrest for certain duration. The song exposes his feelings of being alone in his house and could also hold connotations of his lamentation for his father. Other songs used to create this atmosphere are, 'Dream' performed by Priscilla Ahn, 'Always Love' which is a One Tree Hill favourite so fans may be acquainted, performed by Nada Surf.

Another more evident track within the movie is played at the point in which the romantic level between Ashley (Roemer) and Kale. The song is named 'Lovin' you' by Minnie Riperton. This point in the film is one of my favourites and the song creates immense tension between the two characters but also adds a little comedy before the drama.
Overall the soundtrack is extremely fitting and complements the already fantastic storyline and performance standard.

Favourite quote and clip
********************************************************************* *******
My favourite quote in the film is naturally a comedic one. The conversation begins with Ronnie turning up at Kale's door after he finds out he is trapped inside. Kale answers the door and shouts proudly and excitedly 'Rono!' to which Ronnie replies 'Have you been bathing?' Kale answers 'yes!' and then realises that of all the things Ronnie could have possibly brought from the outside for him to see... he brought...PEANUTS. The two make a joke and then walk upstairs, Kale begins to show him what he has seen out of the windows and Ronnie states as he sees the mess of his bedroom 'Oh my god, you've made the tower of Twinkie! Is that in a stalker's handbook somewhere?' in context this is a great line and the remainder of funny lines come from the ingenious adlibbing of Aaron Yoo, (Ronnie.)

Overall recommendation and thoughts
***************************************************************** ***********
Too me this is one of the best films I saw in 2007. I believe that each character within the film is performed extremely professionally yet realistically youth like and are comfortable to watch on-screen. If you are a fan of any of the cast or crew involved watch this film as it will not disappoint and you will be extremely pleased with the outcome. The film is definitely for the teenage audience but I watched it with my mother whom is 36 and she loved it also. Therefore I would recommend this to anybody who enjoys a good thriller with a little action and the generic romantic element. Overall I completely recommend Disturbia

Thanks for reading

Let me know how you like the film!
