enforcement,Dirty Harry(directed by star Clint Eastwood's longtime friend and directorial mentor, Don Siegel) is one hell of an American cop thriller. The movie makes evocative use of its San Francisco locations as cop Harry Callahan (Eastwood) tracks the elusive "Scorpio killer" who has been terrorising the city by the Bay. As the psychopath's trail grows hotter, Harry becomes increasingly impatient and intolerant of the frustrating obstacles (departmental red tape, individuals' civil rights) that he feels are keeping him from doing his job. A characteristically taut and tense piece of filmmaking from Siegel (Invasion of the Body Snatchers,The Shootist,Escape from Alcatraz), it also remains a fascinating slice of American pop culture. It was a big hit (followed by four sequels) that obviously reflected--or exploited--the almost obsessive or paranoid fears and frustrations many Americans felt about crime in the streets. At a time when "law and order" was a familiar slogan for political candidates, Harry Callahan may have represented neither, but from his point of view his job was simple: stop criminals. To him that end justified any means he deemed necessary.--Jim Emerson

about crime--and the uncompromising response to it that much of the audience would liked to have seen. Clint Eastwood's laconic rogue cop became an instant screen icon; his catchphrases ("Do you feel lucky?", "Make my day") were and still are endlessly quoted, and he even inspired a futuristic comic-strip counterpart in the person of Judge Dredd. Made at the time when the real "Zodiac" serial killer was terrorising San Francisco, the originalDirty Harrystruck a frighteningly realistic note in 1971: aside from Eastwood, director Don Siegel's taught, pacey direction, Lalo Schifrin's nervy jazz score and Andrew Robinson's cackling psycopath "Scorpio" all make a strong impact. Such was the film's success that it gave rise to no less than four sequels, none of which are its equal but all of which get by on the charisma of Eastwood's anti-hero, even when he's increasingly trapped by the character's one-dimensional persona. This five-disc box set contains all the "Harry" movies:Dirty Harry(1971);Magnum Force(1973, with David Soul as a vigilante bike cop); The Enforcer(1976, with Tyne "Lacey" Daly as Harry's new and reluctant partner);Sudden Impact(1983, the weakest of the lot costarring Eastwood's then-partner Sondra Locke) andThe Dead Pool(1988, a surprisingly upbeat end to the series). --Mark Walker

A tremendously controversial film, both decried as an apologia for fascism and hailed as the solution to a decade of rising crime, DIRTY HARRY propelled Clint Eastwood's career into the stratosphere while adding another archetype to join his Man with No Name in film iconography. What follows is one of the most exciting ransom deliveries in film history. The prototype for most of the action films through the rest of the century, DIRTY HARRY rises far above most of them due mostly to an excellent script and Eastwood's gripping acting. That said, the main character's contemptuous attitude toward the Miranda law seems far more damning now that it did in the early 1970s.
Callahan's exploits proved extremely popular and the inevitable sequel, MAGNUM FORCE was released two years later, and in turn was followed by a further three sequels, THE ENFORCER (1976), SUDDEN IMPACT (1983) and THE DEAD POOL (1989). Though the sequels are of varying quality, none diminish the importance of the original, which is now considered a classic.

Advantages: dark, old style good vs bad guy cop story Disadvantages: the younger generation may find it a bit hard to watch
...ahh - the good old days. Harry callahan is one of the best
characters the usa has produced. The story is a twisting, dark tale
but the villian and hero and just as dark as each other. The whole
film is a great good vs bad guy film. this has to be the best of all
the dirtyharry films plainly because of scorpio(the villan). he puts
in a tremendus performance and is evil through and through. Its
also a snip at £5.99 in most video stores.!!! go out and get it...

Advantages: 5.1 Mix Disadvantages: Poor DVD extras
...It`s nice to see some of these old 70s classics getting an airing on DVD. DirtyHarry is the first in a series of films featuring the eponymous hero, a cop who takes on roles of judge, jury and executioner with any scumbag who is stupid enough to go ahead and make his day. Tracking down the psychopathic Scorpio, Harry doesn`t let little things like police procedures get in his way: his determination to pursue his own notion of justice regardless made him a kind of folk hero - a disturbingly fascistic kind of hero, but then this is America we are talking about. Eastwood is superb as Harry Callahan, still carrying with him something of his Man with No Name persona from the great Sergio Leone westerns. Don Siegel directs with panache, and we get a nice 5.1 remix here. Picture is as good as you could expect given the film`s age. All we need...

Advantages: Far more thought-provoking and poignant Disadvantages: Could be hard to follow without the voiceover
...Bladerunner is a classic an innovative sci-fi. The Director's cut is by far the better version in my opinion. A lot more is left to the imagination and a great of significance can be drawn from small moments of cinematography. I always thought the voiceover was rather intrusive, especially in the emotional moments. The music by Vangelis says it all really.
This is something fans should not miss out on. For those who have never seen either version it comes highly reccommended. It raises the question of what makes somebody human. The plot is based around organic machines with a sell-by-date that don't want to die. I ended up crying for the 'bad guy.' Visually it is very strong, set in a rather dirty futuristic Earth....
