enforcement, Dirty Harry (directed by star Clint Eastwood's longtime friend and directorial mentor, Don Siegel) is one hell of an American cop thriller. The movie makes evocative use of its San Francisco locations as cop Harry Callahan (Eastwood) tracks the elusive "Scorpio killer" who has been terrorising the city by the Bay. As the psychopath's trail grows hotter, Harry becomes increasingly impatient and intolerant of the frustrating obstacles (departmental red tape, individuals' civil rights) that he feels are keeping him from doing his job. A characteristically taut and tense piece of filmmaking from Siegel (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Shootist, Escape from Alcatraz), it also remains a fascinating slice of American pop culture. It was a big hit (followed by four sequels) that obviously reflected--or exploited--the almost obsessive or paranoid fears and frustrations many Americans felt about crime in the streets. At a time when "law and order" was a familiar slogan for political candidates, Harry Callahan may have represented neither, but from his point of view his job was simple: stop criminals. To him that end justified any means he deemed necessary. --Jim Emerson

contemporary scoring through the 1970s in a 40-minute showcase of guitars and percussion. Composer Lalo Schifrin consistently weaves intriguing forms from jazz and rock elements. This is perfectly showcased by "Scorpio's Theme" which threads wordless female voice as an insanity flag-marker into a rushing series of complex rhythms. The series' humorous ambiguity over Harry Callaghan's own sanity is likewise reflected in "Dirty Harry's Creed", which makes an electric piano work hard to keep up with more of the fast-paced percussive tempo. The move to the later Sudden Impact and Magnum Force is heralded by a clearly 1980s bass line. Even if the album's cue titles are a little hard to follow, it's never a problem to locate yourself historically as the music style changes with the decade. While technology, fashion, and hair styles may date a film to comic levels, Schifrin's music always stays fresh. --Paul Tonks
Advantages: tense, exciting well acted cop thriller Disadvantages: might be too violent for some viewers
Dirty harry[1971] is one of most successful cop films ever and also highly controvesial. When it was released it drew criticism for its violence.Directed briskly by Don siegel and set in San francisco, its a tense thriller which pitches cop "Dirty " Harry callahan against killer "Scorpio".Harry is called "Dirty" because he takes on the tough cases that all other cops stay clear of.He is a widower, has few real friends and works best alone. He is dedicated ... ...direction.The style was maintained for dirty harry but with a rougher harder edge. The film has a cat and mouse chase feel with harry racing against time to capture scorpio.Eastwood shows the edge and relentless pace that harry works at really well. The one liners that eastwood delivers have become part of movie legend. The "do you feel lucky well do ya punk" is a classic. He also shows harry more vulnerabe side how he does what he does to escape the ...

Advantages: Gritty, compulsive, an original master film Disadvantages: Dark, gloomy look on society
...pay it may not, it’s Dirty Harry’s call.
When this film was released it caused quite a stir, critics called it reckless, and do-gooders saw it as the moral downfall of society. They were probably right, they didn’t like what they saw because it told the truth about society. No filmmaker had dared to be so liberal about civil disobedience, Don Seigel the Director used rapid fire editing and Eastwood’s 6.4” (6.6” ... ...film all playing the outspoken Dirty Harry, most of them are moody affairs and starring his ex-wife Sandra Locke. Clint often seems to have a desire to get beaten up, abused or trodden on before he always comes up the victor. This theme is often seen in his Westerns. I suppose the underlying message tells us. To get stronger you have to sink as low as you can take and then like a repaired broken bone, rise up stronger than before and capable of withstanding ...

Advantages: A well directed film, well acted and full of action Disadvantages: Is it moral or amoral
...film in the series was Dirty Harry which established the character and created a market into which Magnum Force, The Enforcer and Sudden Impact was fed.
The film was set around the pursuit and ultimate capture of a crazed Sniper called Scorpio played with suitable wild-eyed madness by Andy Robinson. As we see Callaghan pursue him we see Callaghans personality develop as almost as pathologically criminal as those he pursues. The difference being ... ...was dedicated in tribute to the police officers of San Francisco who had fallen in the line of duty. Dirty Harry is an excellent film but whether it is a fitting memorial is debatable. An end to the cycle of violence is always the best memorial not ratchetting it up. ...

...The same is true of Dirty Harry. Most people know the name and for many years I knew the name but hadn't the faintest idea about the film itself. Yes I knew that it was Clint Eastwood and that he was a tough cop but what else? Erm, don't know sir.
With a crazed killer holding the city of San Francisco to ransom, the police department appear to be helpless. The killer, Scorpio, is demanding $100,000 else he'll start killing yet more people and although ... ...Spawning a hundred catch phrases, Dirty Harry is one of the turning points in cinema. I don't mean in terms of being revolutionary, or challenging the staid conventions of Hollywood, but rather that it ushered in the gritty violent cop pictures of the 70's. So all you liberal do-gooders out there should point your finger in this direction - here's your culprit.
Dirty Harry is unlike any cop film before it with the possible exception of Coogan's ...

Advantages: good role for Eastwood & direction from Don Seigal, thought provoking, good action Disadvantages: violence slightly stylised, poor picture/sound quality, feels dated
...its age and dated looks Dirty Harry is probably one of the best cop movies to come out of Hollywood. It spawned a host of variations on a theme, even though some would argue DH took a few ideas from the 1968 Bullitt.
The idea of a cop trying to bring criminals to book, but using tactics otherwise outside the law, was quite a novel idea back then and was probably an indictment of how the crimewave in some parts of the States had spiralled during ... ...the criminals he challenges in Dirty Harry, and even though he has the law on his side, its often not enough.
Siegal's direction and the script never lets up for a minute coupled with a very good musical score. But the best part is of course the stand-off at the end. What Eastwood does with his badge is perhaps one of the great pieces of symbolism in movie history and probably had a million liberals up in arms!
The less said about the sequels the ...
