Last week I got three children’s DVDs from my local library, which cost me a pound for a week. An absolute bargain. However there were only two that I really wanted (it was three for the price of two) and filler was Disney’s Dinosaur. My uninformed opinion was that they had seen the BBC series and thought they would Disneyfy (is that a word? It is now) it, cute dinosaurs , baddie dinosaurs and dinosaurs that talk, and to some extent that is true. One thing that surprised me is that a Disney animation should be rated as PG, but as a watched the film I realised why this is so.
Basically it’s a very slight contrived story that fits in with Disney’s animal journey type of films. The animation is spot on, characterisation stock Disney, and does owe much to the BBC’s “Walking With Dinosaurs”.
The opening sequence features a contrived “lost egg” sequence leading to the birth of the main protagonist of the story “Aladar” and his adoption by a group of small monkey like mammals, including a graphic attack by a very scary looking Tyrannosaurus , which was obviously a contributory factor to the PG rating. This is soon followed by a superb meteor storm resulting in the destruction of the mammals’ home and an excellent escape sequence, again fine for older children but may be disturbing for smaller children.
After their escape they join a migrating herd of dinosaurs, continually threatened by vicious carnivores in their journey across a decimated and desiccated landscape. There is a love interest for Aladar , and of course you can guess the ending being your typical Disney film, although it does have a darker side in that there are many shades of character between goodie and baddie in this film.
The landscapes are stunningly rendered and you are soon drawn into the film, and it doesn’t flag for a moment. The animation is excellent and dialogue is fine and sparse enough as to not be too obtrusive, although there is very little comedy in the film bar the odd one liner from the head of the mammal family.
If you have had the same attitude to this film that I had, forget your misgiving and rent it , or even buy it immediately. There is nothing in here that is grating or nauseous, and the story will not tax you a great deal, but visually the presentation is stunning. I doubt there will be a follow up , but this is an excellent one off.

Review of Dinosaur (Animated) (DVD)
Advantages: realistic, beautiful cinematography, great for ages 6 and up Disadvantages: "scary" carnivores, and complex themes make it too much for under sixes
