Being a big cinemagoer I had planned to see this in all it’s glory on the big screen (I’ll go watch almost anything) but no-one would go with me so I had to wait for this DVD, and I was pleasantly surprised!
I’m not the biggest disney fan. As a kid I watched ‘em but even then they didn’t do much for me. Aladdin was good, as were The Lion King and Tarzan but as for the rest…Pocohontas? Mulan? I didn’t even bother, so I was glad that Dinosaur managed to keep me entertained for an hour and a half.
All kids (male ones at least) love dinosuars and I don’t think I outgrew this, (Jurassic Park is one of my all time fave films) so this was bound to please on at least that level.
The story is of a dinosur egg which ends up in the care of a family of Lemurs (Lemurs were not about during the time of the dinosaurs but Disney wanted cute and fluffly to go with the Dinos so I’ll let that go!) on an island off of the
mainland full of dinosuars. The egg hatches and the little dino (Aladar is his name) is bought up without any other Dino contact but seems quite happy anyway. When he has reached a pretty hefty size disaster strikes in the form of a big meteor that decimates the island, leaving Aladar and his ‘family’ stranded on the mainland.
As they wander about they bump into a large herd of various breeds of dino who are heading for the Ancient Nesting Place (a kind of Dino Utopia) so they decide to tag along. Aladar makes friends with two ageing female dino’s who are struggling to keep up with the rest of the herd and fear they will be left to die. It seems that Dinosaurs don’t care about each other and gladly leave stragglers to rot behind them, this is enforced by the leader of the herd, a nasty piece of worked (who I believe is called Kron).
So the main bulk of the film is this herd of dino’s plodding along to their dino paradise with the obvious interruptions thrown in. Aladar falls for Kron’s little sister which leads to confrontations between our hero and the semi bad guy, Carnatour’s (T Rex basically) turn up now and again to feast on our dino friends and Aladar and his group get cut off from the main herd and have to survive by themselves. Of course (without wishing to spoil anything) it all ends happy and we all feel great!
The computer generated characters fit seamlessly into the real backgrounds and the special effects (especially of the meteor strike) are stunning. The film does look very nice indeed, my only quibble is that the dinosaurs are given this soft cute look which is kind of distracting as it detracts from the realism. At least the T Rex don’t have this and probably manage to scare a few children as they wtch this! Of course I am speaking from an adult’s perspective (well, a 21 year olds anyhow), I’m sure kids love it!
The cast doing the voices are relatively unknown but they provide good personalities for the characters and do very well with what must be quite a hard performance (how do you ‘be’ a dinosaur?!)
If you are a fan of Disney then this will please you I’m sure, if you’re a dinosaur freak then likewise. However even if you aren’t a big fan of Disney or animated films in general, still check it out. You may be surprised, I thouroughly enjoyed it and it was never my first choice of things to see.
The DVD itself is absolutely packed. I bought the special edition (a few pound more but with an extra disc of features, so buy this version!). It has everything you could ask for. A directors Commentary, Deleted Scenes, Music Videos, tonnes of stuff on how the computer effects were achieved (in every detail), information about the score and sound effects, loads of drawings of the character designs, a Dinopedia filled with facts and two little games (one of which involves using the arrows on the remote to navigate a series of cves for your friends and water, which although easy and slow is a great new sort of extra, more of this please!). You couldn’t ask for more in the way of features, all nicely presentd with animated menus.
All in all a pleasant film with something for everyone, enjoy!

Advantages: The advantages of this film is it enables you to step back in time and see what these dinosaurs may have looked like. It also lets you see what incredible things you can produce with todays technology. Disadvantages: Some scenes are in the dark and you may not be able to see whats going on.

Review of Dinosaur (Animated) (DVD)
Advantages: realistic, beautiful cinematography, great for ages 6 and up Disadvantages: "scary" carnivores, and complex themes make it too much for under sixes
