Walt Disney created his first feature film over 40-odd years ago and to come up with the magical cinematography and storytelling of Dinosaur proves that Disney is truly the worlds best when it comes to animation.

The story of Dinosaur told by Disney is simple, action packed, sad and educational, it did not only have my nephews glued to the set, I was unable to budge for the whole feature length.

I have it on Collector’s Edition DVD and there is enough on the disc to keep my nephews and me happy for hours!

The Film ~

The story is about a dinosaur called ‘Aladar’, who make the first appearance in the film from inside his egg, what is about to hatch is a beautiful yet tragic story of the lives of the dinosaurs.

When he was an egg Aladar was taken from his nesting grounds from another dinosaur when his mother had to flee the nest after a T’ Rex went on the rampage through the nesting grounds, and this is when his journey to new lands begin.

Aladar’s egg is taken on a great journey that is shown in such great detail in the film, the sheer quality and craftsmanship is amazing. Eventually Aladar end’s his journey still undisturbed in his egg, in the jungle and is found by a family of lemurs.

Aladar is brought up in the world by the lemurs and is one of the nicest dinosaurs you will ever meet! Well that is a meat-eating dinosaur, because Aladar is an iguanodon (meat eating dino’s) but as he was brought up by lemurs he is a vegetarian, I am sure I said this was educational.

Anyway a massive meteor hits earth and Aladar and only 4 of the lemurs survive and find themselves on a journey looking for somewhere to live. It is not long before they bump in to other dinosaurs, which Aladar has never seen before.

So what follows next is a magical journey to the nesting ground for all the dinosaurs, the journey is filled with sadness, laughter and education, but without giving to much away I will leave it for you to view for yourself. I keep getting told of for giving the plot away?

Special Features ~

Disc 1 ~

This disc is packed with stuff for special features and I will list each one and what they are below:

~ Audio Commentary

This is the whole film shown again from start to finish only this time it has a commentary from the director Ralph Zondag and his partners Neil Krepela (Visual Effects) and Neil Eskuri (Digital Effects). At each scene they describe how it was made and what how the desired effect they were looking for was achieved. Very Interesting only watch able once though, it made the film seem a lot slower.

~ Aladar’s Adventure

This is a fun feature for the kids in the shape of a virtual game. The aim of the game is to find three of the dinosaurs that are lost in the caves, along your journey though you may bump into the bad dinosaurs, so try to avoid them. You also need water to survive and there are three opportunities to stop and collect it. The game is fun controlled by your remote but is very, very slow. I think kids will like it initially then get bored.

~ Dinopedia

This is a great little feature that is educational for the kids it is an interactive type trailer, that takes kids or adults on a magical journey of the dinosaurs. It goes through each species and type of dinosaurs one by one explaining their eating and living habits. It has one let down though and that is I think it goes through them to fast even I was lost, how would a kid pick it up?

~ Dino Search

This is another virtual game for the kids to play, the aim of the game is to pick a dinosaur, and there are three to choose from. What the child has to do is search through the nesting grounds for three pieces of the dinosaur to bring it to life. The instructions are clear and easy for even me to understand! Again it is a little slow but will have them glued for hours at a time.

~ Behind The Scenes

There are three ways to use this option they are as follows:

1 ~ Fossil Icon ~ when this appears on your TV screen, press enter on your DVD remote and it will take you behind the scenes to show you how that part of the film was made, once the clip is finished the film will commence where it left of. Fun but makes the movie less interesting, as you are to busy looking for the fossil.

2 ~ you can opt to access the clips from their own menu without having to play the movie, similar to a chapter selection.

3 ~ Select from chapter menu, this is when you can have the movie shown, so that it will automatically go into the behind the scenes footage whilst the movie is playing, this is useful as you do not need to look for the fossil icon and can concentrate on the film itself.

~ Orange Blue

Next feature is a music video of the song that is featured in the credits. The song is called Orange Blue I think, or that could be the name of the group, anyway the song is good and the guy in the video is kind of cute J.

~ Theatrical Trailer

The feature that is on almost every DVD these days the trailer is for the movie that would have been shown in the cinema. This one is basically the 1st 5 minutes of the film and shows of the digital cinematography perfectly. I remember seeing this at the cinema and thinking I must see this, it took me nearly a year?

~ Chapter Selection

You can start the movie at certain points throughout the film, for instance Billy my youngest nephew he fell asleep, and I noted what chapter the film was at and when he woke up the next morning he watched it from that selection and then decided to watch the whole thing again, really it is that good!

~ Set Up

This section enable you to set up the language you wish your DVD to play, but strangely English is the only option, however, there is a list of subtitles:

- English (for hearing impaired)
- Hebrew
- Arabic

~ Sneak Peeks

This is Disney getting it’s advertising in on the DVD craze and releasing a lot of new films exclusively to DVD they are as follows:

- The Kid – starring Bruce Willis
- Lady and the Tramp 2 – Scamp’s Adventure
- The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2
- Atlantis

The trailers also include a trailer of Snow White. The film has been digitally re-mastered and will be released later this year exclusively on DVD and it will be one on my list, this was the first full feature Disney film and will be a classic to own forever.

You can watch the trailers if and when you please, but note that they automatically play when the DVD is started, this is a bit annoying.

The final option is The Movie, which is self explanatory in it actually plays the movie.

So if you are looking for a DVD that will entertain the kids and yourself for hours this is the one, they will no doubt watch again and again, watch out though this one can be a tear jerker to, well you know what I am like with the sad bits, Kleenex ahoy, it’s those big Dino eyes! Enjoy

Stunning Pleasantry With Big Teef
Review of Dinosaur (Animated) (DVD) by mikeydred

Advantages: Stunning Animation and a fabulous meteor shower and baddies with big teef
Disadvantages: Fairly slight story but it's Disney

Last week I got three children’s DVDs from my local library, which cost me a pound for a week. An absolute bargain. However there were only two that I really wanted (it was three for the price of two) and filler was Disney’s Dinosaur. My uninformed opinion was that they had seen the BBC series and thought they would Disneyfy (is that a word? It is now) it, cute dinosaurs , baddie dinosaurs and dinosaurs that talk, and to some extent that is true. ...
...should be rated as PG, but as a watched the film I realised why this is so. Basically it’s a very slight contrived story that fits in with Disney’s animal journey type of films. The animation is spot on, characterisation stock Disney, and does owe much to the BBC’s “Walking With Dinosaurs”. The opening sequence features a contrived “lost egg” sequence leading to the birth of the main protagonist of the story “Aladar” and his adoption by a group ... Read review

Should have seen it at the cinema
Review of Dinosaur (Animated) (DVD) by polli

Advantages: Visually stunning, kids'll love it
Disadvantages: weak plot

...of characters etc. etc. Dinosaur was Disney’s first attempt to make a computer animated film (released summer 2000, rating PG) in which the animals looked realistic, which is what makes it so remarkable. The animation is absolutely spot on and the dinosaurs look fantastic, with an inspiring soundtrack to match. The animators obviously wanted to flaunt their new found talents and so the film contains quite a few sweeping landscapes which are ...
...enjoyability (if that’s not a word, it is now). The monkeys, when seen close up do resemble muppets but other than that, Disney certainly achieved the ‘real’ look they desired. The story follows the trail of an iguanadon named Aladar who is separated from his parents before birth and is raised by a lemur family. (Sound familiar?) After The Meteor To End All Meteors crashes to Earth and destroys most of his family and all of their ... Read review

Not the best Disney DVDs ever.
Review of Dinosaur (Animated) (DVD) by shaun

Advantages: Reasonable film which looks nice
Disadvantages: Dull DVD content across both Region 1 & Region 2 formats

...and, together with the narrated Dinosaur Encyclopaedia, it kept the kids engaged. The menus are fully animated with a soundtrack though they are a little slow. The disc is single sided and dual-layered with the blank side covered in full artwork. It is packed in an Amaray style case but comes with only a menu card instead of a booklet. The picture transfer is digitally sourced in the same way as Toy Story or Antz. It is produced in an anamorphic ...
...and Tarzan. In short, a dinosaur is separated from it’s own kind, raised by friendly primates in a jungle, eventually meets animals of it’s own species when in adulthood (Tarzan so far!) and then fights to gain the respect of the herd and assume it’s leadership (shades of Mulan!). This was the biggest disappointment for me, that it was so unoriginal. While I can sit with the kids and watch Bugs Life and the Toy Story films over ... Read review

Dinosaur Dino Good Fun DVD
Review of Dinosaur (Animated) (DVD) by Staggly

Advantages: Good looking dino flick that appeals to aduts as well as children
Disadvantages: Dinosaurs look too soft

...so I was glad that Dinosaur managed to keep me entertained for an hour and a half. All kids (male ones at least) love dinosuars and I don’t think I outgrew this, (Jurassic Park is one of my all time fave films) so this was bound to please on at least that level. The story is of a dinosur egg which ends up in the care of a family of Lemurs (Lemurs were not about during the time of the dinosaurs but Disney wanted cute and fluffly to go with the Dinos ...
...I’m sure, if you’re a dinosaur freak then likewise. However even if you aren’t a big fan of Disney or animated films in general, still check it out. You may be surprised, I thouroughly enjoyed it and it was never my first choice of things to see. The DVD itself is absolutely packed. Disney's Dinosaur is a roaring sucess
Review of Dinosaur (Animated) (DVD) by cazaline16_2000

Advantages: The advantages of this film is it enables you to step back in time and see what these dinosaurs may have looked like. It also lets you see what incredible things you can produce with todays technology.
Disadvantages: Some scenes are in the dark and you may not be able to see whats going on.

...are many different types of dinosaur ranging from Brontosaurus to Velociraptors. Even if you don't enjoy the film I can promise you the effects will not let you down. I really loved the music for this film. The music plays a big part in this film and really illustrates the power and majesty of the dinosaurs. The music helps you realise feelings such as fear, happiness and despair. I can't really think of anything negative about this film except ...
...so you have to have your TV settings just right to see whats going on, also the storyline is not very original but with the special effects you will be able to forgive it. This is a film for all the family young or old but I think you have got to have at least some form of interest in these incredible animals to really enjoy and appreciate this film. ... Read review

Reviews which might be of interest for Dinosaur (Animated) (DVD)
Park Life
Review of Prehistoric Park (DVD) by  gizmoregis

Advantages: Absorbing and interesting, you learn without feeling you are taught
Disadvantages: Lack of additional features

...This series two years in the making sees Nigel Marvin travelling back in time to collect prehistoric animals before they are made extinct and bringing them back to a sort of Jurassic Park. The difference in this series and many others is the energy and then stemming from that the believability that the host/Actor Nigel Marvin brings to the role. Nigel Marvin brings his experience of previous wildlife productions to the roll (a few are shart kweek, Big Cats, Animal Detectives and rhinos but there are many more) which makes the experience all the more believable and credible. On the DVD's there are six episodes each of which revolves around a different prehistoric adventure as Nigel sets out captures, and cages these interesting creatures. The DVD also looks at the extinctions of the mammoths, sabre tooth cats and of course... Read review

Smack that monkey
Review of Night At The Museum (DVD) by  beckle_82

Advantages: Good Family Fun, Great cast
Disadvantages: Predictable ending

...," but the cast is pretty amazing. Robin Williams stars as the 'fatherly advice' spouting Theodore Roosevelt, and puts in a standard of performance you would expect. The baddies of old security guards (headed by Dick van Dyke) aren't that convincing - and I thought Mickey Rooney's character was just awful and rather pointless. Although the film has a predictably heart warming finale it is worth renting for the kids, or like me have a couple of hours to spare. You will finish watching it with a grin on your face. The special effects are a bit hit and miss - the dinosaur is very good but some of the animals aren't amazing. The DVD extras are pretty good too. The making of featurettes are interesting, and the blooper real is probably as funny as the film. You get a whole second DVD full of extras to keep you occupied. The cover... Read review

Ice Age 3 .... Yawn At The Dinosaurs
Review of Ice Age 3 - Dawn Of The Dinosaurs by  Rhiana

Advantages: Fab animation, good kids film
Disadvantages: Lacks the comedy I loved in first film's. No match to the first two.

...It was a typical late July day. The rain was pouring from the skies, my daughter was firmly over the novelty of being on school holidays, and I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Desperately needing to get out of the house for a few hours, I loaded up the web page of our local cinema to see what was on offer. Hurrah, Ice Age 3: Dawn of the dinosaurs was one of the offerings! We have both the previous Ice age movies on DVD and they have both been a massive hit with both the kids and myself. I noticed it was showing in both 2D and 3D, and as we'd never experienced the latter decided this would be our entertainment for the day, and little miss and myself got ready to go in eager anticipation. As such my review is of the film only, as it's still showing at cinemas and not yet available on DVD. Ice Age 3: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs... Read review

DVD Description

With DINOSAUR, Disney breaks a new stride in the technological revolution of computer animation--combining computer-animated characters with digitally enhanced live-action landscapes. The effect is literally unbelievable and the clarity, realness, and definition of the pictures easily make the once surprising effects of virtual reality seem like the dark ages.
A dinosaur egg is stolen from its nest and passed along by various birds, animals and other predators each hoping to eat it. Fumbled into a community of kind and nurturing lemurs, it cracks open and Aladar, a baby dinosaur emerges. He lives happily and peacefully among the lemurs, who raise him into adolescence. However, when a natural disaster occurs, wiping out the beautiful rainforest that was their home, teenage Aladar joins a dinosaur pilgrimage--and discovers his true ancestry--in order to bring his lemur family to safety. Far sweeter and much more realistic than recent dinosaur movies like JURASSIC PARK or even classics like THE LAND BEFORE TIME, these new digital dinosaurs are surprisingly human with emotional eyes and expressive voices that make the magic nearly tangible.
