This sitcom is like no other, it originally aired in '98 during the time when comedies filmed in front of a studio audience seemed old. This was a brave choice by the writer, the multi-talented Victoria Wood, because it might have been slated for being old fashioned and cheesy, but it was not, instead there was something new and refreshing about this comedy. Apparently it was just an experiment to see whether she could write a sitcom, and in my opinion succeeded brilliantly!
As you can probably tell by the name, it takes part in a factory canteen and follows the lives of the workers there. The characters are Bren (Wood), Tony (Andrew Dunn), Dolly (Thelma Barlow), Jean (Anne Reid), Twinkle (Maxine Peake), Anita (Shobna Gulati), Stan (Duncan Preston), Philippa (Celia Imrie), Jane (Sue Devaney) and Petula (Julie Walters). Each of these characters are brilliantly cast and written, you will definitely feel like you've met at least one of them before. That's what I personally love about Victoria Wood's comedy, the observation that goes into the writing, it always feels so natural, and you get sucked into the world, and feel like you've known these characters all your life, and yet you never see any of them outside of the work environment. The whole sitcom takes place in the canteen, which many might think is boring, but it isn't, its partly what makes it so watchable, its like it's a character itself.
I should point out when I brought this from Amazon.co.uk it showed the cover art that is shown on the page, however I was sent one that is orange, with really small casing (which I prefer, because its easier to store) for each of the three discs. It personally doesn't bother me at all because I think all it was, is that they re-released in different packaging, as far as I know the contents are exactly the same, for instance neither have special features. I only make this point, because I think this is likely to be more commonly available than the box cover that is on the websites, so be careful!
In this box set, the complete first series is on one disc, these episodes are: 1.Monday 2.Royals 3.Scandal 4.Moods 5.Party 6.Nightshift The second series has 10 episodes, and because of this is split up between two discs, the first disc contains: 1.Catering 2.Trouble 3.Holidays 4.Fog 5.Gamble 6.Christmas
On the casing for disc one of series 2, it doesn't have "Christmas" on it, and instead it is labelled on disc two, but as you can see this is not the case. The remaining series 2 episodes are: 1.Minnellium 2.Christine 3.Gravy 4.Toast
Although I have mentioned faults, they don't affect your enjoyment of the series at all, so despite these reasons I strongly recommend, this box-set.
