Dinnerladies - The complete first series.

There are no extras on this DVD.

This is the funniest series that I have even seen, I can relate to this programme in so many ways, as being a chef myself, you had to start somewhere, and when I first saw the first episode, I was hooked.

Mondays - the first episode, well you know yourself what its like, getting up for work on a Monday morning, when you would much rather just stay in bed, well there they al are, in their fetching tabards, and little hats, The you hear a voice " shutter's up , lets feed the faces of folk', well that did it for me, you knew he meant business, that was Tony, Catering Manager, he's the one in the white overall, who's always got something else to do. Just as they are about to start serving lunch, this woman from Human Resources appears, and tries to get the kitchen staff interested in country dancing.

Royals - Stan the Cleaner finds out that a Royal is to visit the factory, but is made up to hear that its someone he's already met, when in the army, when he was whitewashing the walls. But when the Royal arrives he doesn't remember Stan at all, so Bren to the rescue, she finds out that this Royal is sick of posh food, and just wants a bacon sandwich. She promises to make him one, if he says he remembers Stan. Very amusing, as the royal keeps asking Bren for a bunk up.

Scandal - There is one line in this episode which goes close to the wire as it was shown just at 9pm , it was during this episode that Bren's mum Petula, shacks up with a toy boy, but his mum doesn't like the idea, so chains herself to the factory railing. After much deliberation she agrees to meet Petula and discuss the situation, then the line that makes the episode for me 'Answer me one question love : Where's my Clint?' enough said.

Moods - Just a normal day in the office kitchen then, everyone shouting and falling out. Stan throws a tantrum and locks him self in the ladies loo, well e did have his cone out, when Anita walked in. Again another fantastic line from this episode, during Dolly and Jean's bickering, Jean says to Dolly "What's the point of having a pelvic floor like a bulldog clip",

Party - Its time for the Christmas Party, everyone lets their hair down, some more than others, but this year they are having the party in the style of their latest franchise deal, they are having a Japanese party. Tony thinks this is it, time to finally get it together with Bren, you could see this coming now for some time, but will it or won't it happen?

Nightshift - Tony is off work sick, so they have a temporary Catering manager by the name of Nicola Bodeux, the staff can't stand her, interfering like she is, camembert and beetroot, whatever next, pink flimsies, this is a canteen after all not a hotel. After a long day most have the staff have walked out because of this woman, then a bombshell, Mr Michael need everyone to work all night, to finish an order, but without staff, what will they do?

This series is so brilliantly written, and the comedy lines that run constantly throughout this DVD are fantastic and hilarious. It is the comedy genius of non other than Victoria Wood, more famously known for her stand up routines, and Acorn Antiques, had done it again with this masterpiece.

The Actors / actresses in this series are :

Victoria Wood - Bren
Thelma Barlow - Dolly
Shobna Gulati - Anita
Maxine Peake - Twinkle
Anne Reid - Jean
Andrew Dunn - Tony
Julie Walters - Petula
Duncan Preston - Stan
Celia Imrie - Philippa

The storylines are so funny, you will be wanting to watch it over and over again, or just get the next series, as that's just as funny.

Like I said earlier I was drawn to this being in the catering industry myself, I wondered if it would do the job justice, as I thought it was like a documentary thing, not a comedy series. So I was immediately taken in by the reality of the show, from the sets, to the hygiene, everything was to the letter, she obviously did her homework before writing this. After watching the first series, I wondered if that's what people thought happened in canteen kitchens, and wondered what the staff that I worked with thought of me. I was going to find out as the next day at work a got more than a few comments about being like Twinkle, for the sense of humour to the being slightly large, the only difference they could see is that I wore whites not a tabard. Gee thanks.

So that was it I needed to lose weight, and I did, and feeling very pleased with my self, I asked do I still remind you of Twinkle now……thinking No would be the answer. You haven't seen the new series yet have you, they shouted. So I waiting with anticipation for the next episode, and couldn't believe my eyes, she's lost weight too. So I have never been able to forget this series, but not just for that reason, but for the outstanding performances, and perfection that every member of the cast brings to this series.

How can I sum up this DVD - Outstanding, Amazing, Funny.

The running time is 2 hours and 52 mins.

It was produced by Geoff Posner and Victoria Wood, Directed by Geoff Posner, Written By Victoria Wood, Executive Producers Phil McIntyre and David Tyler.

Thanks for reading,…………………….Why are you still reading……Go and watch it…………… Thank you.

I haven't ever seen this, I don't know why because a) I love Victoria Wood and b) I funded my way through college by working as a catering temp so I'd "get" the jokes. Incidentally, I thought catering was ace - much nicer than working in offices. I've got this theory. Any industry where you have to take flack from or interface with the public seems to attract the kinds of people who take everything in good heart and deal with life's ups and downs by using humour! Cheers Sweary.
