1988 and established a new template for action stories. Here the bad guys, led by the velvet-voiced Alan Rickman, assume control of a Los Angeles high-rise with Willis's visiting New York cop inside. The attraction of the film has as much to do with the sight of a barefoot mortal running around the guts of a modern office tower as it has with the plentiful fight sequences and the bond the hero establishes with an LA beat cop. Bonnie Bedelia plays Willis's wife, Hart Bochner is good as a brash hostage who tries negotiating his way to freedom, Alexander Godunov makes for a believable killer with lethal feet and William Atherton is slimy as a busybody reporter. Director Renny Harlin took the reins for the 1990 sequel, Die Harder, which places Willis's New York City cop in harm's way again with a gaggle of terrorists. This time, Willis awaits his wife's arrival at Dulles Airport in Washington, DC when he gets wind of a plot to blow up the facility. Noisy, overbearing and forgettable, the film has none of the purity of its predecessor's simple story; and it makes a huge miscalculation in allowing a terrible tragedy to occur rather than stretch out the tension. Where Die Hard set new precedents in action movies, Die Hard 2 is just an anything-goes spectacle --Tom Keogh The second sequel, Die Hard with a Vengeance brings Detective John McClane to New York City to face a better villain than in Die Hard 2. Jeremy Irons is the brother of Alan Rickman's Germanic terrorist-thief from the original film. But this bad guy has his sights set higher: on the Federal Reserve's cache of gold. As a distraction, he sets McClane running fool's errands all over New York--and eventually, McClane attracts an unintentional partner, a Harlem dry cleaner (Samuel L Jackson) with a chip on his shoulder. Some great action sequences can't obscure the rather large plot holes in the film's final 45 minutes. --Marshall Fine
set for any self-respecting fan of action cinema. The gold, of course, is the original Die Hard, a flat-out five star classic pretty much without equal. Introducing Bruce Willis' John McClane as an ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation, it's littered with great lines, great characters, and genre-defining moments. Plus, in Alan Rickman, it has one of the finest cinematic villains of the past few decades. Die Hard 2: Die Harder inevitably dilutes matters, this time switching the action to Washington's Dulles International Airport. But with Willis and a good number of characters returning from the original, it's a fun--if at times brutal--ride, that scores highly in the entertainment stakes. Die Hard: With A Vengeance, the third film in the series, pretty much strips away the bulk of the supporting cast, and replaces them with the not-significant figure of Samuel L Jackson. It changes the dynamic of the film into a buddy-buddy movie, albeit a good one. And again, it's a ride that's hard not to enjoy, with Jeremy Irons giving good measure as McClane's chief foe. Finally, Die Hard 4.0 is a real surprise. Given the fact that it arrived over a decade after the third film, it finds Willis and relative newcomer Justin Long shouldering an entertaining, old fashioned action film, that papers over its occasional cracks by asking its lead actor to ramp things up a gear when necessary. And watching John McClane do what he does--even when any hint of reality is thrown out of the window near the end--is endlessly entertaining. So while none of the sequels have matched the peerless original, the Die Hard Quadrilogy nonetheless delivers one classic, and three very enjoyable action movies. And you can't argue with that kind of hit rate. Always, always bet on McClane... --Simon Brew
Advantages: Brucie's back... Disadvantages: No "Richard Thornburg" or "Holly Gennero McClane" !
...previous review for the original Die Hard movie, Willis is the ideal person to play the tough action, quick witted cop. Willis has adopted and moulded the role of John McClane into the perfect action hero, and it is now difficult to imagine anyone else in the role.
Samuel L. Jackson takes on the role of Zeus. Whilst Jackson was already an established movie actor, with titles such as Patriot Games, True Romance and Jurassic Park on his resume, Jackson ... ...actors as villians, and the Die Hard movies are no exception. As you might expect, with Jeremy Irons in the position, he carries the role with finesse and style.
Die Hard: With A Vengeance is directed by John McTiernan, who also directed the first Die Hard movie.
John McTiernan, prior to directing the original Die Hard, was already established as a great director following his work on "Predator".
His vision and ability to translate a paper screenplay ...

Advantages: The addition of SLJ, Bruce Willis, superb plotting and direction, OTT action Disadvantages: The explosion count is predictably low.
...over, is a wreck in Die Hard With A Vengeance. His wife has left him, he’s living on his own, he’s got an alcohol addiction, and he’s been suspended from police duty for being too bad-ass for his own good. Sadly for John, as he’s woken up by the police, he’s needed again to help them. Nursing the mother of all hangovers, John has to obey the riddles and commands of a mysterious phone voice calling himself “Simon”, and the first thing he wants John ... ...lets up. It’s fast and exhilarating, and there are lots of explosions - and naturally a yippie-ki-yay – and it all leaves me looking forward to Die Hard 4.0 with all the open-eyed wonder of a German looking down the barrel of a gun. Perhaps that’s a bad metaphor…. ...

Advantages: Lots of action with some pretty funny moments Disadvantages: Dialogue deficiencies
General:
I enjoyed this film tremendously, mainly because I liked the gritty nature of Willis's performance, coupled with Jackson's insouciant attitude, rather than any truly great plot lines. But let's face it, if you're looking for a meaningful film you're in the wrong place!
Plot:
Bruce Willis plays an NYPD cop on the slippery slope of impending alcoholism, whose wife has left him and is generally disabused with what life has to offer. A bomb ... ...(Jeremy Irons) puppet as he (Irons) forces Willis to do as he says, otherwise another bomb goes off. Together with Samuel L. Jackson, who also gets involved by chance, Willis runs around the city trying to comply with Irons' seemingly meaningless demands. Irons then tells the police that there is a bomb in an elementary school, with a limited time before the device detonates. The news throws the city into a panic, aiding Irons' ultimate plan of a ...
